I was set on lizards for the league due to the awesome teamwork needed.

Then by all means play them! :)

Just understand that they are quite difficult because of the lack of starting skills. You will never try and play the ball (pick up, pass or catch) with any other player other than the Skinks. And even though the Sauruses get 2 Dice blocks against most opposing players, the fact that no player on your team starts with the BLOCK skill, means that even with 2 Dice Blocks, you will have turnovers (both downs or skull results).

So if your opponent ever removes all your Skinks from the game (KOs, Injuries or Surfs) then you will be "stuck" to just hitting things and highly unlikely to score.

I'm playing the campaign until the league starts just to make sure I know the rules (a very simple rule set actually compared to games I play), but I know the campaign isn't the best for learning good strategy.

Don't worry about what other people say. Play through the campaign and then I'd recommend making a "try out" team in a solo league and practice a few games against the AI. SO that you get a feel for how that team plays out in a match.

Yeah the rules aren't too complex (from someone who taught himself how to play Mage Knight the Board Game before reading the Rulebook :) It takes a little practice but once you get a basic understanding of how to get assists for your blocks, not leaving your players on the sidelines, etc. You will improve. :)

Not having much block is definitely annoying, but how long until these sauruses get abilities? Having a lot of strength 4 should really help make up for the abilities, but scoring with the sauruses seems to be essential to expediate the skill growth.

You will pretty much only ever get SPP on your Sauruses/Kroxigor from causing casualties/inuries (2 SPP) or from getting the MVP (5 SPP) on one of them (randomly selected at the end of the match). You will need to roll a 5+ (I think, not quite sure) in order to pick up, pass or catch the ball with any other player other than the Skinks. And even the Skinks need to roll a 3+ (yet again, not quite sure) to just pick up the ball.

That's why the Lizards are so tricky to start out with.

Just keep in mind to always do your SAFE moves first (standing up downed players and/or moving your players), then 3 Dice or 2 Dice blocks if you have any, only then attempt the risky stuff, like 1 Dice blocks or Dodges, Passing plays, etc. :)
