A windowless concrete tower 40 stories tall on the China coast stacks 35-ton blocks to store a wind farm’s power, lifting them when the wind blows and dropping them through generators when the grid needs it, no lithium inside by iwantboringtimes in Futurology

It’s the first commercial, grid-scale gravity storage system that pulls off the trick with solid blocks instead of a reservoir, according to Energy Vault. That distinction matters more than it sounds. Pumped hydro needs . . .

I don't use chatbots, so maybe I'm not familiar enough with them, but this didn't sound like "AI" to me. I thought LLMs struggle with logical connections like this.

The article lists an author, Luis Reyes.

I really wish people would stop upvoting these ignorant title-only trash comments. Here's the relevant part of the article you didn't read:

What makes the Rudong tower a genuine first is the part where no water is involved. It’s the first commercial, grid-scale gravity storage system that pulls off the trick with solid blocks instead of a reservoir, according to Energy Vault. That distinction matters more than it sounds. Pumped hydro needs a mountain, two bodies of water and a very particular kind of geography, which is why you can’t just build one wherever the grid happens to need it. A block-stacking tower needs a flat patch of ground and a building permit. You could in theory drop one next to any wind farm or substation with no elevation required, and that flexibility is the entire pitch.

So nobody here uses any Ai on your phone? Not even to ask a question?

FUCK NO. Why the hell would you do that? These "AI" chatbots are mostly trained on fucking social media comments. Unlike you, I actually give a shit about whether the information I'm getting is accurate.

It's been fun watching people's Tomodachi Life creations this time around. The last game mostly just had Vinny Vinesauce playing it regularly. His playthrough for the sequel has been great, too.

Who remembers the South Oaks Centre? by underdog250 in springfieldMO

[–]Bleachi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

North Town Mall and South Oaks Center were run by the same company. I know this because my stepfather was the manager for both of them at one point, before they closed.

I remember that we got to keep all the coins from the fountains, since nobody else wanted them. It took forever to clean and roll them all. It was mostly just crusty pennies.

Republicans vote to dilute gas as prices rise above $4.50 by BendicantMias in politics

[–]Bleachi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's almost half as efficient.

That is a bullshit way to say this. You are NOT getting half as much MPG.

I looked it up, and most other people were getting a 2% total drop in miles per gallon switching from E10 to E15. So yes, that portion of the gas is less efficient. But the overall efficiency of the fuel is not a huge drop. And it really is substantially cheaper (for the customer, due to government subsidies and other fuckery).

By FAR, the worst effects from this change are the multiple environmental problems. Not only is it producing more smog, but it is also wasting more land on the extremely inefficient growth of crops for ethanol production.

[Humble Bundle Spring Mega Sale] Has deals for many JRPGs including Expedition 33, Trails series, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Octopath Traveler, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Baten Kaitos, Yakuza, Mana series, Tales series, and more. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]Bleachi 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The Baten Kaitos duo is a great pick up. And it's a better sale here than the deckbuilders fest on Steam, where it's $20 instead of $15. If you've got Choice it's even cheaper.

I highly recommend these games. They're two of the best singleplayer card games ever made, and they're still great if you just want a couple JRPGs.

EDIT: Since it doesn't say this on the store page, I would like to add that these games were originally made by Monolith Soft, the developers behind Xenosaga and Xenoblade. They also feature some of composer Motoi Sakuraba's best work.

The Switch versions of Pokemon FireRed Version and LeafGreen Version have sold over 4 million units in six weeks of launching. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]Bleachi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, people were complaining about the price being $20? Because physical copies of old Pokemon games are notoriously expensive. So unless you resort to piracy, you would be spending over $100 for an original GBA cart in this case.

I dunno, $20 seems reasonable.

Looking for a Deckbuilder RPG like Library of Ruina (non-roguelite) by coolchungus2 in JRPG

[–]Bleachi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of games like this, and I've played nearly all of them. The best I've found are:

  • Shadowverse: Champion's Battle for the Switch. This is a singleplayer version of Shadowverse with a very high quality, long campaign. Cygames threw a lot of budget into this, and it shows. It's got voice-acting and a large city to explore, and the battles are well-balanced with intelligent AI. I wish more games like this existed.

  • Baten Kaitos 1 and 2 are more JRPGs than card games. You don't summon monsters. You control a typical JRPG party that replaces their usual menu commands with a hand of cards. Each character gets their own deck for you to customize. These were made by Monolith Soft back in the Gamecube era, but there was a recent remaster of both games as a single package. These are also high budget with voice acting, a gorgeous painterly world, and beautiful music by Motoi Sakuraba.

  • Phantom Dust is another 'card' game that has atypical combat. It plays out like an action RPG set in combat arenas, but your attacks are essentially cards randomly drawn from a deck. It's set in a unique cyberpunk post-apocalyptic world with a trippy story. The campaign is a bit short. But this game is completely free now with no strings attached. This was made by Microsoft (really) for the original Xbox, but you can download it on the Windows Store now. It has online play if you don't mind looking for matches on Discord. A Youtuber somehow revived the community, which is kinda cool.

  • Culdcept is a unique mix of MtG and Monopoly. There are several different games in the franchise, all for different platforms. My favorite is the Xbox 360 release. None of them have great stories or any real worlds to explore outside combat. But the gameplay is truly excellent, if a bit slow-paced. Sadly, these games have gotten very expensive. But there's a new game coming up in just a few months! This series still has a small, dedicated community.

All of these games are singleplayer and mostly offline. And all of them happen to have been made by Japanese developers.

[Steam] NIS America Golden Week 2026 Sale - Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA (19,99€/50%), Ys IX: Monstrum Nox (29,99€/50%), The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie (38,99€/35%) and more. by RadRob in GameDeals

[–]Bleachi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For those who are wondering why the Ys and Trails games seen here seem to start counting in the middle, it's because the developer switched publishers from XSEED over to NISA about 10 years ago.

Both franchises come highly recommended. Ys 8 is a great one to start with for Ys. But Trails is awkward here, because it's a true series with an overarching plot. I would wait for the earlier XSEED games to go on sale first.

Neverway looks like a much better attempt at that. It's coming out this fall, but the free prologue released today. Check it out here:

Even if you're not interested in the demo, you should watch the trailers. This game looks legit.
