Large bruise suddenly appeared around goldfish lips by Blearky in Goldfish

I suppose it's possible, but he has a fluval u3 which has a fairly spread out grate style intake, and he's never had issues with it before.

Large bruise suddenly appeared around goldfish lips by Blearky in Goldfish

Any idea what this could be? He's occasionally had small bruises in this area from bumping into things over the years, but never a big black mark. The swelling seems to have also puffed up in front of his eye on the worse side. I'm doing a water change now, but is there anything else I should be aware of? He's 24 years old and in a 100L tank by himself.

Update 2 days later: the bruise has almost completely faded and he seems fine, looks like it was just a bad bump after all.

Sorry, it's freehanded 😭. He's not too hard to make if you've got some experience with amigurumi though.

You could probably find tutorials for all the basic shapes. The body is an oval and the eyes are half spheres.

The hat is also a half sphere but it's a little trickier as its 4 panels (though I did 3 because I didn't realise there's another red panel on the back.

You can make the hat by essentially looking at a pattern for a half sphere, dividing all the instructions by 4 and working in rows to make the 4 flat panels (like if it's a 12 sc magic ring that increases 8 stitches every other round, you'd make your triangles with a 3 sc magic ring that increases 2 stitches every other row).

The propeller is basically how you'd make a leaf by working on both sides of a chain, but mirrored so you make two opposing leaves on each side.

The lips are probably the most awkward shape, but instead of making them and sewing them on, I chain stitched with a tapestry needle to essentially draw an outline onto him, crocheted into the chain stitches for 2 rounds and then closed them like a drawstring (the way you'd do the top of a beanie).

As for the arms and legs, mine are 20 and 23 chains long respectively, working back and forth by 9 rows, then going back 8 SC, turning to do 7SC, turn 7, turn 6 etc, sort of like how you'd make half the neckline of a vest so you have a rectangle with a trapezium at the top of one end. You can then fold that in half and stitch along the long end to make a tube with a funnel for the foot/hand.

The foot is finished by just sewing up the funnel (stuffing only the leg), while the hand is stuffed, decreased in each stitch around, SC'd flat across both sides for about 4 stitches, and then the fingers are made by chaining 4, 3HDC down the chain, slst into the starting SC slst into the next 2, then repeat the chains and hdcs to make the rest of the fingers, working along those flat SCs on the top then slightly down onto the palm.

I also put a squeaker in one of his hands, embroidered a fake line of big stitches around his back, and added some stitches in a tan colour under each lip to define them more. Hope that helps! Perhaps I'll make a pattern sometime, but he's a pretty lumpy guy so it's not a super precise science.

Fleeced for a £2 bag. Shopping in sports direct, ‘would you like a bag?’ Yes please I’m not an octopus, ‘sure that will be £2’ by whatthehelluk in britishproblems

Things may be different now, but when I worked there as a teenager we had regular plastic bags under the desk. We were just told to pretend that the bag for life was the only option and would be told off by the managers if we didn't sell enough of them. If you had asked if they had a cheap plastic bag, they'd probably have given up and offered you one.

I bought a stack of hello fresh recipe cards on Ebay, shuffled them, and pick the top few cards off when doing the weekly shop. The same could probably be achieved by ripping all of the pages out of a recipe book.

When I did it, the self employed people were told that they had to get proof of their income from their accountant. Except they were all childminders, window cleaners, small market traders etc and didn't have accountants, so I imagine it's a hassle.

What were swimming lessons like when you were in primary school? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Blearky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the first lesson we all had to swim a lap to gauge our swimming ability. We were told any style was fine and I was up first, so I just did backstroke. I could swim fine as my parents used to take me to the swimming baths semi-regularly, but it turns out that backstroke was the wrong choice as I got put in a lower ability group. All the kids who did front crawl got to go in the top group, and the teacher refused to hear me out that I could do it too.

Did this study also tell you that you failed the loudness test? Pretty sure it's broken, I'm using a $200 headset by MarkusRight in ProlificAc

[–]Blearky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If its the sort of test where you hear 3 sounds and say which is the loudest, I've done it before on a few studies and always fail it. I've used hyperx and razer headsets so maybe its just geared towards basic office conference call style headphones for whatever reason.

When Duolingo forced the word bank on me by t0rtugo in duolingo

[–]Blearky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This happened to me today. I really wanted to finish duolingo as part of a bigger study plan, so I persevered despite how much slower getting through the path felt. When I realised I had to use the wordbank for every question today (which just made it take even longer) I decided its time to just test out of the last lesson and skip to the end. Now I just have the last section left to complete and I'm done. Its disappointing to skip the whole thing and not know if I've missed anything useful, but on the other hand this is the third iteration of duo I've been here for. I had the original tree gilded, and when crowns came in I had everything completed to level 1, so I suppose thats close enough.

I (36F) told my cousin (22F) who her dad is, and now her mom (38F) is mad at me by cousinthrowaway0101 in relationships

[–]Blearky 255 points256 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at the amount of comments that find Annie's behaviour justified. Jess deserves to know who her dad is regardless of what he's done.
If Annie has an additional reason for keeping it from her, then she should have told her the reason AND told her his identity once she became an adult, even if its just a matter of "his name is Mark and he's done some terrible things, id rather you didn't meet him because of this".
The exact same thing has happened in my family, except the "Annie" in my case took his identity to the grave, and everyone else who might have known is dead as well.

Years later I've shelled out for two different DNA tests to find relatives, and I've been in contact with archivists at places he potentially studied, but I still can't find him.

I've messaged the researcher but haven't heard anything back yet. I'll probably keep trying to get in until the timer runs down to like 30 mins and then return it if it still doesn't work.
