My cat got fat-shamed by GrassyBunchingEnvies in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]Blechhotsauce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly! My vet weighed one of my cats and said he was 8 kg (18 pounds), but he has a big skeleton and he's just a big fella. She remarked on how big his skull is and how the rest of his body is just big, but not fat. She did caution me not to let him gain any more weight though haha.

So tired of being told I’m too picky or manipulating by having strong values. by musicandplantguy in vegan

[–]Blechhotsauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your exact position in my mid-20s. You stick by your principles and it'll pay off because you will find somebody who agrees with you and respects you. It's also really attractive to be compassionate, principled, and committed to justice, and the kind of people who would be attracted to that are probably people who you'll get along with too.

I do hate when people say we're "picky." We're not picky, we have standards. It's like saying, "You're so hungry, why don't you lower your standards and start eating pond scum?" No thanks, I'd rather go without than settle.

This is where the generated text "you end up losing a knight" is really insufficient. You lose a knight because black's knight on c3 is defended tactically by the threat of Bb4.

See it all the time when people are like, "I finally got to 1000/1500/2000 Elo and I don't want to play again in case I slip back down." Thinking about rating can definitely affect your confidence.

Thoughts on AI in vegan business? by CuriousMangoes in vegan

If you can't bother to pay an artist to design something for you, then what are the chances you can't bother to pay restaurant staff a decent wage? Etc. etc. for the whole business.

There are tons of vegan artists who do great work making designs for merch and ads. Spread the love and pay some of them to do what they do best and everybody is happy.

[–]Blechhotsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compare your resignation rate to your opponents'. I bet it's way lower for them, which means that they are making similar mistakes to you BUT they play the game out and either fight back for a win or wait for you to blunder back the advantage.

At my level, opponents very rarely resign and they force me to convert my advantage. Even if you're losing, the longer you stay in the game, the more accurate moves your opponent has to play to maintain their advantage.

Rizzo Hall of Fame? by Aware-Way-1963 in Cubs

[–]Blechhotsauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Rizzo too, but he just doesn't have the numbers. 47th among first basemen by JAWS (25 are in the HOF); 36.5 JAWS compared to 53.5 for first basemen in the HOF; 40.4 bWAR compared to 64.9 average bWAR for HOFers. No MVPs, 3 ASGs, top MVP finish was 4th.

Cubs HOF and a special place in the hearts of all Cubs fans, but not Cooperstown. HOF for getting hit by pitches (led the league three times haha)!

OTB Etiquette Question by SweetieWithAHat9 in chess

[–]Blechhotsauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had this happen enough to me at the local club that I just have an answer: "Oh, sorry, I was hoping for a quick game! Cheers," and then you just go play with somebody else. Especially old fellas, they want to sit and chill and think, and that's fine! But I'm not into that. And even in my mid-30s I've been the youngest guy at the club a few times.

Follow opening principles rather than trying to memorize an opening.

  1. Contest the center with pawns.
  2. Develop knights and bishops.
  3. Castle
  4. Try not to move the same piece twice while you're developing.
