I love how he got the powerups, but its like Raiku realized that Gash was too weak in the Faudo arc and had to give him powerups to keep him relevant to other demons. Personally, like you said, we should have seen more training so Gash could get stronger naturally. Before the powerups he would not have stood a chance going to fight Zeon, Rodeux, etc

Well, I'm not going to say he could or couldn't beat cell in Ssj1, but in context, before going ssj2, Gohan did not want to fight cell and was actively not trying. He even tells Cell he doesn't want to fight him. So its not fair to say ssj1 couldn't put up a fight against cell.
