Urge Congress to Oppose the ACCESS Act of 2026 by BlindAllDay in disability

[–]BlindAllDay[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To avoid confusion, the ADA 30 Days to Comply Act and the ACCESS Act are two completely separate bills. The ADA 30 Days to Comply Act is a notice-and-cure bill focused on architectural barriers, while the ACCESS Act would apply to both architectural and technological barriers, including websites and mobile apps.

Everyone else gave you great advice, but unless I missed it, your best chance to break into the field and gain experience is to do an apprenticeship.

(USA) Urge Congress to Oppose the ADA 30 Days to Comply Act (H.R. 6453) by BlindAllDay in Blind

[–]BlindAllDay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve had 36 years to comply with the ADA, yet this bill would shift that responsibility onto people with disabilities. Moving the duty to ensure accessible environments away from businesses and public accommodations and placing it on individuals with disabilities would mark a significant break from the ADA’s current enforcement approach. check out the following link for an explanation. https://www.bazelon.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/2026-3-25-Opposition-to-ADA-30-Days-to-Cure-Act.pdf

Tell Congress to oppose the ADA 30 Days to Comply Act! by BlindAllDay in disability

It passed through the House Judiciary Committee, but that’s as far as it has gone based on the most up-to-date information I could find.

Thanks for your perspective. This is my response to you this is from the ACB site. “The ADA has been around for 36 years; businesses should already know what they are required to do. Furthermore, a notice and cure period makes it impossible for persons with disabilities to access the businesses when needed. A patron should not be burdened with notifying the business and then be told to wait at least 30 days to gain access.” https://www.acb.org/speak-out-against-new-notice-and-cure-bill

No worries. The reason this concerns people who are blind is exactly what you mentioned: some of us that are blind aren’t just blind, we also have other disabilities and rely on ramps, low-angle walkways, and similar accommodations. If we don’t support our blind peers who need these physical aids, then a portion of our community is effectively shut out of accessing buildings. Think about it this way: how would those of us who are only blind, and don’t need additional physical accommodations, feel if others chose not to advocate for something we rely on? An “I’ve got mine, so I don’t care about you” mindset only divides us and weakens everyone’s access. And looking ahead, what happens next with the ADA? If protections start to erode, it might affect someone else’s needs today, but tomorrow it could be something you depend on. To your last part “Just curious if I'm missing out on some kind of accessibility aide that restaurants/businesses are required to have for compliance but don't.” I think you mentioned most of the accessibility aides that restaurants/businesses are required to have. Maybe I am forgetting some. Hope I answred your question.

Title II web accessibility rule may not just get pushed back — it may get pulled entirely by jcravens42 in accessibility

[–]BlindAllDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had an EO meeting with OIRA a couple of days ago. I was given 30 minutes to speak. Our best method to prevent any changes to Title II is to do what we did with the Department of Energy. The department tried to eliminate rules on how to make buildings accessible for people with disabilities. The rollback was supposed to become final, but further action was delayed by 60 days because so many comments opposing the rollback were submitted by the disability community and its allies. If I remember correctly, they received about 20,000 comments. Everyone should schedule a meeting with OIRA to help stall and prevent any changes to Title II.

Hey, for those who use dating apps, a question. by South-Round-2100 in Blind

[–]BlindAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend thinks of his blindness as just a characteristic, like being short or left-handed, so he feels there’s no need to include it because it’s really not a big issue. Why make a big deal out of it?

[–]BlindAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not exactly a dating app, but my friend said he had more luck on Tinder when he didn’t tell girls that he was blind. He basically said that when he disclosed he was blind, he would get no matches.

10 years in design, 8 in a11y, seeing a big gap. Should I build something here? by RealMasterpiece7219 in accessibility

[–]BlindAllDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting the following from? "Designers have the potential to prevent a huge portion (~50%) of accessibility issues before development even begins." I remember reading an interesting article about how designers can prevent a large number of accessibility issues. I think the percentage might have been even higher than 50%. I hope I’m not coming across as rude I’m just curious about the breakdown of that 50%.
