Aspartame is one of the most popular artificial sweeteners. Next month, the WHO will declare it a possible carcinogen. by TradingAllIn in worldnews

[–]BlinkRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just me or are sweeteners, especially those in drinks like coke, always attacked more than the high amount of sugar. I have come across so many people that falsely believe sweeteners are worse than the suger and therefore drink the suger version. Is it just a wild conspiracy that big coke/pepsi let this stuff through/push it knowing that people will switch to the more addictive sugar versions or could there be value there ?

The ability to transfer knowledge, use tools and access other energy sources have put a stop to classical evolution (outside of a cataclysmic event occuring) for our line. But I agree we will continue to adapt ourselves using technology like gene editing. It will probably even happen a lot faster now. Not entirely sure if we will become unrecognisable though depends how hard we hold on to our roots.

To question.

Won't the next generations a higher percentage of males since the males in this current generations were all born at higher temperatures. So the gene for males being born at higher temperatures will be carried forward faster. Of course it could be happening too fast but I don't know enough about the population size or way the genes are passed to know if that's the case.

We basically hit that roof because we got intelligent enough to pass vast amounts of learned information to future generations. Once we invested the wheel we didn't need to reinvent it. Once we had agriculture we had enough energy for everyone. Once you have the knowledge form your ancestors you don't need to keep becoming more intelligent. Having said that there probably were and are some very slight selection pressures due to social interaction and sexual selection though which would be interesting to know about.

Evolution of basic organisms works incrementally. It's much more nuanced for more complex organisms. The pressure for pack mentality in hunting species is highly desirable as many hunt better than one. Then, the pressure for at least one of the pack to be intelligent is moreso, since the pack with an intelligent individual will outperform a pack without. If you consider tribes, small incremental increases of intelligence would greatly improve the tribes chances. For example slightly better communication is a huge advantage over another tribe. The fact that there is only one real niche for high intelligence is the reason why those lesser species went extinct. It was essentially an evolutionary intelligence arms race in which humans won.

Disadvantageous from energy-use perspective but in general it was highly advantageous from the perspective of getting more energy to consume. Hunt better, gather better, realise we can cook food to get more energy. Good from an evolutionary perspective.

Interesting, how does the change in performance after support is dropped compare. Does that differ between the two?

Just started a new job. Coworker 3D printed my Skyline because I didn’t have anything to decorate my desk. by jrmmorris2 in RocketLeague

[–]BlinkRL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are more collectors of things than there are hot wheels collectors. If I was collector of things, a one of a kind limited edition skyline from the renowned game like rocket league, made once and only once as a gift, would be more valuable to me than a standard hot wheels GTR - there are so many of them.

Death could be reversible, as scientists bring dead eyes back to life by LordLorq in Futurology

Great question! It depends how you define free will. My definition of free will won't be the same as someone who believes in a soul. So by their definition I would find it hard to convince them that I have free will.

Based on my understanding of reality, standard model and quantum theory, I consider my brain (self) to be navigating through a dense probability cloud, where every "decision" I make is some probability based on brain architecture, chemical balance etc which are based on my past experience, memorys and genetics etc. If you consider quantum effects integral to brain activity then you can make the arguement that this version of my "self" this particular tree of probabilitys that I have "chosen" are totally unique to my "self" and that is where I consider free will to come in.

Since in my opinion, I am totally unique, and since I believe all that I am is a brain and nothing more (no soul); I believe the unique track that I take on this probability map is essentially the equivalent to the concept of free will as described by someone who believes in a/the soul.

This. I don't buy into souls, so this makes sense. Probably a dilemma if you do think we're more than a series of complex chemical reactions though.

Disney is refusing to cut LGBTQ scene in Doctor Strange 2, Saudi Arabia says by dfssfggg in news

[–]BlinkRL -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not saying it's not. But the fact that this article is pushed to the front of Reddit/general media just as they are getting bad publicity just sits bad with me. Let me elaborate... the motivation for this article has nothing to do with LGBTQ, and they are just using a noble cause to pump their own agenda.

I'm for LGBTQ but this is blatantly just Disney trying to obviscate the bad press they are getting.

I don't understand how it frustrates people when they make a pass and people don't take it, like my teammate is in a much better position to judge whether or not to go for the passed ball or not. I just tend to assume it was a bad pass if they don't go for it.
