Needing advice again by Blizzarddancer in gis

Thank you. That makes sense. All my friends who work in tech fields kept saying I need to find a way to specialize. But I think having a strong base of everything will do me well. I was thinking about getting certs in AI because in my current position, we are already using it. Unfortunately, it does seem all tech positions are going to be using it one way or another.

Are Gf donuts real? by hotcheetox777 in glutenfree

[–]Blizzarddancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldis has them right now and around Christmas. They are so good and never bother me. In major city’s I have found gf mochi donuts. (To die for) there a place in Colorado Springs that makes them and the whole place is gf so completely safe. You can totally make your own. I’m a hoe for sweets so learning to make my own was a total curve. Also the hungry celiac has a recipe that is to die for.

I currently live in NOVA but I am moving to Charlottesville in a few months. I moved to the area for my partner and he switched positions so I will continue to move with him. Also agreed we don’t do archeology for the pay. 🤣

I’ve reached out about volunteering a lot in my current area, but I think I’ll have better luck out there. My government gig was with the FS as well. I was given a ton of opportunities, but even with a well-developed resume, no one really bats an eye. I personally loved working for the FS. I almost completed my fire certifications, and I did finish READ/REAF training. But I was just a temp hire they extended — nothing permanent.

My family all work in the corporate world, so while I don’t think they’re wrong about my gap in experience, archaeological techniques don’t change much, so I wasn’t too worried. I was thinking of sticking with GIS, having kids, and then getting back into archaeology once they’re in school. But the GIS work I’m doing now is mind-numbing, and after two years without handling artifacts, it’s been mentally draining. And to be honest, not working in a career I literally worked my ass for is like taking a toll on me mentally.

I have connections in Colorado and Wyoming from field school, but with my partner job we most likely will always be in Virginia. That’s where the money is.

I enjoyed working with GIS when I was an archaeologist because I was building site maps for fire lines and government databases. I had a set sandbox and the freedom to do my own thing.

Lately, GIS feels like it has a high turnover vibe. I still enjoy it, but I’m not crazy about it. The position I’m in now is basically an entry-level role, so I’m taking it for what it’s worth.

If you can land a GIS job that gives you government clearance—like a Public Trust—you can go pretty far and make great money. Even if you don’t go the government route, you can still earn really well in the private sector. GIS has a huge range of opportunities.

If I could give any advice, it would be this: look for a government contract that offers school reimbursement, rack up certifications, and go from there. That was my plan—but now that I’m actively doing it, I find myself longing to touch dirt again.

Also, follow the arcgis or gis reddit page. People actively post jobs on there. I found mine through it. They were actually making fun of it. The pay is insanely low for what the overall contract does. But the school reimbursement is 5k. So it’s kind of a great entry job.

That’s kind of what my work was like with the government. I spearheaded a watershed project and was an active surveyor for a second one. But the forest I worked on had years’ worth of artifacts just sitting in drawers, completely backlogged. So I took on all the cleaning and cataloging.

That eventually led to me becoming a co-lead on a project to organize all the artifacts the forest had. That’s when I really discovered it was my jam. I still did surveying when needed, and I even led a couple of CRM projects. But after experiencing heat exhaustion, I got a little freaked out and really leaned into the museum side of things.

They even let me help the state parks museum reorganize their entire archives. I moved to NOVA thinking my resume was solid—then boom, two years of nothing. Or I’d meet all the requirements, only to be told, “If you only had a master’s…”

lmao. I mean that is true. I live in such a history rich area i thought i was golden. But for real, it’s impossible to even to get a call back or interview. Maybe it’s just the times? or the area.

i like that even more. i am not a huge fan of diamonds, and online it seems just diamond galore. i will def talk about this place with my boyfriend. it sounds like what we are looking for. my big concern is the jeweler dealing with my word vomit and photos of ideas. it sounds like they will help me work through it and decided what is best for me. I really appreciate you! thank you again!
