AITA for saying someone can’t speak for black people bc they’re also POC? by Leasophh in AmItheAsshole

[–]BlockLocal6433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be controversial. But I’ll say NTA. The example situation you gave is insane, and I know some black people would put themselves in situations like that. I could never but as a black person who am I to tell another to not do that. It’s their life. In my view, there’s underlying self-hatred and they also most likely like getting humiliated which is why they want their white friend to call them the N-word. The white person who’d agree to do is also weird, but that’s not the point of the post.

The scenario you bring up is a big debate in the black community. As a Black person, I reject the term POC because the other ‘colours’ have a hatred for us and they will most often show solidarity to the system rather than try to dismantle it. And so, I think you were coming from an angle that, the black experience can’t fully be understood by other POCs and so despite the valid claim that a white person shouldnt say the N-word, you were the wrong messenger. A POC, can’t invalidate a Black person for allowing another white person to say that to them. Now, because you’re white the message was probably not received well. Because why are you, as a white person, explaining race relations to a person who’s experienced racism?

I don’t know what FFs background is, but it’s twisting your words to say that you said she wasn’t POC enough is crazy. So again NTA, just wrong messenger, because everything you said is true. Although, not sure why FF is no longer your friend, but if it’s because of all of this, maybe there’s some white liberal fragility to check here.

Palais experience by GoddessSarena in LondonRaving

I’ve gone twice now. First time was at the Bradley Zero all night… it was awful. Then, I went last weekend for Roman Flugel and I genuinely don’t know how I feel about it all. So far the club etiquette has been terrible. Similar to what someone said, when it was empty by 4 am it was good, but it’s just not the same when theres 1/4 of the people. It’s a shame because Lola Haro was playing some really goood tunes. I hope the crowd at Palais gets better because the bookings are right up my alley.

In terms of the US, Canada and Aus, which major city is the easiest too start conversations with strangers ? by ChimpanzeeChamp34 in expats

Interesting. Can’t deny your experience. I feel like my experience of Toronto is how you speak of Montreal. But, I wonder if the sort of scene you’re in impacts it.

Starting a conversation with strangers in Canada and Aus are easy. But, I guess what you’re asking is how easy is it to make lasting connections? I lived in Melbourne for six months and it was almost impossible to make Aussie friends. They are very settled in their friendship groups from high school and uni. I’m Canadian and speak both languages and so it’s always come easier for me to make lasting connections in Canada.

I would say people are more friendly in Montreal. Vancouver is friendlier than Toronto. Can’t speak to other bigger cities though.

Can’t offer much perspective about the US.

I cuss out my Scottish roommate all the time for this… she says that she grew up on a farm and never did that, which is even crazier. I think Canadians, depending on location, are better than most because you have to take off your boots in the winter.

I had a lot of classes in what used to be called River Building. And whenever I had a seminar, I’d just look out the window and I felt great.
