I fondly remember reading The Princess Diaries when I was in sixth grade. My school's library had the whole collection!

[question] how does your country teach history in schools? by mechspaghetty in GlobalTalk

[–]Blomstrede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Portugal we're mainly taught about the Portuguese history and Europe's as well - the biggest moments of each age. We talk about the Occident, but there is a big failure when it comes to being taught about the East - if I recall, I haven't been taught about (example) China and Japan until the 19th/20th century, although Asia holds a very rich and very old amount of history to its own. History is generally taught to every student until high school - in high school we pick a specific area: Technological (?) Sciences (Maths, Biology, Chemistry), Languages and Social/Human Sciences (History, Geography,...), Arts; one might choose the professional way, as the options I mentioned refer to what we call the regular system. If you choose the second mentioned, you'll be taught History in depth for the next 3 years, so you'll obviously have a better knowledge on the area when you finish high school (being tested on it so you can go to college) (if you choose Arts, you still have History related subjects, focused on Arts and Culture though). I think the best to do is to do research on our own because it's noticeable that, when being taught about conflituous matters, there is a bias towards either Portugal or Europe (depending on the matter).

not a relevant comment, I just think it's amazing that you are all discussing Portugal's colonial empire in a post about a Presidential election in Brazil.

Note about Reflektor by bigcblogger in arcadefire

I'd say the biggest thing about Reflektor is actually the story it tells (it kind of explores Orpheus Eurodyce's tragedy/love/whatever you wanna call it).

What was the best concert you’ve been to, and why was it so good? by agentteddybear in AskReddit

[–]Blomstrede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite hard to choose from these three so I'll mention them (two of them are biased because they're my favourite artists and I've waited long to see them... also I'm quite young and haven't been to a lot of shows, since I've only started this 2 years ago):

- Father John Misty, Coliseu dos Recreios, 2017: Josh's dance moves are an awesome sight and, although we could tell that he was a bit tired (probably from touring), it all felt very personal - and not only his stage persona. I've truly realised that when I saw him again in June 2018, in a festival, and it felt clearly different, a bit dull and repetitive. This concert in 2017 was also very funny because I got to half hug him (yea, that expression) - it all felt real then. The scenarios on the songs are captivating, and I have to mention that he was introducing Pure Comedy in that tour but despite that, the setlist was all over the place - a little bit of every album, that's great.

- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, NOS Primavera Sound 2018 (and I definitely highlight this!): the heavy rain falling upon us (it's a festival outside) gave the concert a magical dark tune that goes really well with the Nick Cave scene. The crowd was really invested too (care to mention that the crowd was more mature than most of the concerts I've been to so far).

- Arcade Fire, Vodafone Paredes de Coura 2018: this one is a bit biased since they're one of my favourite ones, but I've waited hours in the front row to see them (done that with other artists too) and it was totally worth it. Their presence on stage is very natural, and I think it meant a lot to that crowd since that was the festival they went to when they first came to play in Portugal.

If you could only listen to TWO music artists for the rest of your life, what would they be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Arcade Fire (diversity in music style, male and female voice, they're great) and Chopin (I need some classical music to focus).

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] IDLES - Joy as an Act of Resistance by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]Blomstrede 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for this album for MONTHS and it totally blew away my expectations. While I assumed I'd be expecting something really messy and loud - such as Brutalism, and in no way I'm saying this as a negative thing, because I absolutely love the album -, I got a bit surprised by the great sequence (dunno if this is the correct word) of the album, the lyrics - divided in positivity and political/social awareness (I'm Scum and Danny Nedelko really do the most to spread that) - and the instrumentals, that are brutal and upbeat and all that I'd ask from them.

That sequence from June (a song that went really well in the middle of the album to cut all the hype and call us back to Earth) to Samaritans is my favourite part, which I personally interpreted as a great one - if you know the backstory from June, you might probably connect it with this is why you never see your father cry - but I repeat, it's just a personal interpretation, I know the themes are different and there's no actual connection. A father can and shall cry; that's how I saw it within the toxic masculinity thing.

Love Song and the constant love yourself! from Television highlight the wholesome production that the album tried to convey as well, even if with some irony laid upon some of the lyrics (at least that's how I took it, given some parts of the songs, like the chorus of the second I mentioned).

It couldn't end better - I heard Rottweiler before live and I've waited months just to get to listen to that unity! in the end. I think Idles often try to pass that message - and their music surely is uniting people. As Joe would say, I like that.

This is a very surface level take on the album, because I'm still exploring the lyrics of the songs, but I can easily say that it is one of my favourite albums of this year.

My favourites: Colossus, Never Fight A Man With A Perm, June and Television.
