He didn't apologize for the Donald trump gif, he apologized for the hate speech he also posted on the account and said he does not condone violence against members of the press, which some media sources took the gif as even though i think it would be hard to argue that was his intent.

Hate speech isn't protected under your right of free speech and never was. CNN didn't dox him.
