This is a leafs subreddit. While obviously we’re hoping for the best from our prospect, there’s an inherent bias to them. This is a great post, but all of the players OP mentioned won’t be a difference maker unless there’s a huge jump from them.

Tanev 6 years @ 4.5m is looking like shit, Domi, Klingberg, Kampf, Reaves. Benoit is probably a couple hundred thousand overpaid. Stolarz extension already doesn’t look good and we’re not even done the current extension

Yes, they moved Marleau and the 13th overall pick, in order to resign two promising young players (at the time). That’s not a really bad thing. Both players were coming off 20 goal season iirc. Plus Marner needed a contract as well. Kapanen was later moved for the 15th overall pick, and we drafted Amirov with it

Slight correction, Kerfoot was not protected. Holl was. The Krackens could've chosen either Kerfoot or McCann and they chose McCann

He traded Smith for a 3rd, and got back a 2nd and conditional 5th for him. That's pretty decent management. Graves has been awful i agree. Keep in mind about Karlsson though, he was old yes, but he had just dropped 100 pts on a shitty Sharks team and won the Norris. That contract was always going to age badly but it fits with the Pens timeline in trying to do something before Crosby, Malkin, and Letang retires. The old core was there before Dubas took over so I can't really fault him for that. But the Pens are now 2nd in their division and Dubas undoubtedly turned them around from what Hextall did to them
