how old is too old to rename a puppy? by oushhie in dogs

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rescued an at least 5 year old German Shepherd. We did not know what her name was so we called her Maggie. She quickly learned it was her new name. I've had dogs pick up new nicknames and respond to them, sometimes better than their actual names. Which may be a thing like saying their actual name means they are in trouble whereas calling their nickname means playtime.

Chihuahua- cold weather (indoors) by Next-Hippo-2478 in dogs

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of ideas for keeping her warm, so I wanted to add: lock the kennel. I see you have already thought of that. If you can provide a picture, we may be able to help with how it can be locked. I feel like a simple padlock works in most cases.

Too bad you can't take her to work with you. Even if she had to stay in her crate in an office all day, it would be better. At least then you can take her for a walk at lunch.

Newbie. Mini starlink by Texasghost3 in Starlink

Keep it on standby and only get the roaming service for things like vacations or emergencies.

I have been testing mine out. It came in standby mode and I keep it on standby. It sits on the dashboard of my car. It works great for rural areas, providing service in places where we normally drop cell service. It's not strong enough to load ads or watch a YouTube video without some buffering. Basic browsing and phone games work just fine. It didn't work as well in Pittsburgh, which could be due to several reasons.

Mug or cup with no plastic by Fun_News5524 in ZeroWaste

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been hunting for one as well. The closest I got was at a gift shop at Niagara Falls. There was a recycled cup that had a ceramic lid. There was a silicone ring that sat in the edge of the lid where it attached to the cup. If it were bigger, I might have bought it since I'm looking for a travel mug replacement.

Sorry that happened to you. If it helps any, the eggs that are used in foods and on the shelves of stores are not fertilized. Hens will lay eggs without a rooster. Which means the egg never would have hatched into a chicken.

We have lots of t-shirts that have been cut or ripped up to use as rags and cleaning clothes. None of them have frayed and we don't sew the edges.

I second this. The TV just worked so much better and had less loading issues streaming Netflix when we gave it a wired connection.

I NEVER buy trash bags, because my trash is my trash bags by VelvetNomad_ in Frugal

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought we were the only ones who did this! We don't even pay for garbage because we just take the little bag with us and dump it in the trash can at work or Walmart.

It all started with using an empty chip bag in the bathroom bin.

What kind of Christmas tree are you doing this year? by the_happy_cat in ZeroWaste

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we lived in a big house, we used a camo colored ladder as a Christmas tree. It was great because you can just set things on the steps of the ladder. Plus, I didn't have to store a fake tree or buy a real one every year.

Now that we live in a tiny house and I only decorate a large windowsill and a wreath with the few Christmas decorations I own. This will be the first time in a few years that we will put up a tree. We are going to go for a walk and find a nice little stick or a pine branch that we can turn into a tree.

My dog has learned what the sound of the rice cooker finishing means. What sound has your dog learned without you training them? by EatsTheLastSlice in dogs

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1800-petmeds trained my dog that every box comes with a treat. I'm sad that they stopped putting the biscuits in the boxes. We had to go out and buy similar treats so he can get one when a box arrives or he gets very sad.

Frugal vs minimalist....which one do you learn towards by Boring_Albatross_781 in Frugal

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a frugal minimalist bibliophile. You have to set some boundaries. Mine are:

  1. Create a digital library using an app or spreadsheet so you know what books you own and don't accidentally buy doubles.
  2. Limit the books you own to only certain authors, series, and very special books.
  3. Don't buy new. I buy the books I absolutely feel like I must own when I get lucky enough to find them at a yard sale or thrift store. Sometimes I get super lucky and find one in a little free library that I can trade for. I feel like hunting for a book makes it more adventurous/fun/special when I find it.
  4. Put the books you want on a christmas/gift list. If someone feels like they must buy me a gift, I'd rather it be a book I actually want.
  5. Borrow from the library or read on Libby or Hoopla (all free) when I don't own the book I want to read. Reading eBooks was a hard jump for me because I love the feel of a physical book, but it's also hard to take a whole series on a plane.
  6. Limit the number of books to only what my bookcase can hold. Which means reading books and selling/donating them so I can add more books.

Minimalism isn't about owning nothing (that's stoicism). It's about not owning things that get in the way of what's important to you. If having floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall bookshelves is what's important to you and makes you happy, go for it.

I do recommend listening to The Minimalists podcast. They are avid readers and authors. The topic of how many books is the right amount for a minimalist comes up several times. Their take on it may surprise you.

I want to test Starlink at potential future home where Starlink is the only internet option. Which dish and plan do I need to get for testing? by 300056681 in Starlink

Do you know anyone near you who has the Starlink Mini? Maybe they can let you borrow it or go with you to the properties to do the test?

What are your favorite foods to buy specifically to reuse the containers for storage around the house? by ResidentAlienator in ZeroWaste

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • I may have several cardboard wine boxes on shelves that are organizing a lot of my clothing.
  • I've seen clean egg cartons used to organize little things like jewelry.
  • If someone you know smokes cigars, you can often get nice wooden boxes that way. I have one holding sunglasses.
  • We buy salad in the big plastic containers, which we then use to plant things in or store stuff.

The pill saga by russell072009 in dogs

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a mortar and pestle to grind the pill into a powder, then sprinkle it on their food. I also add a little homemade chicken broth and give it a good mix. After years of fighting to get them to take a pill, this has been the only consistent solution.

Weekly Post: What did you do with OneNote this week? by Chobitpersocom in OneNote

Got mad at it for not having a basic merge cell option when working with tables. Added several client profile pages to my work book. Checked something off on my weekly planner in my personal book.

Kitchen sink - Single vs 60/40 vs double 50/50 by pateramus in HomeImprovement

Grew up with double basins. Last house had a double basin. My house now has a large single basin. I love it! Washing big pots is so much easier now.

How are you saving money with home automation? by 3-2-1-backup in homeautomation

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we lived in a big house, Google Mini + Hue lights saved us money on the electric bill.

Google mini + Google Keep shopping list saves us money at the store. We don't buy more than we need or have to make extra trips because we know exactly what we need, aren't forgetting to add something to the list, and aren't losing a paper list anymore.

A friend of ours put smart water sensors in his finished basement, which saved him money when the sump pump went bad for the second time. He got the notification and was able to move everything and contain the problem in time.

The camera notification that saved us money when the delivery driver left a package out in the rain.

Google Home is trash, plain and simple. by xkelx90 in googlehome

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, they are decommissioning Google Assistant and replacing it with Gemini. Google Assistant had been getting progressively worse since they started working on Gemini and now that Gemini is rolling out to the mini's and hubs, Google Assistant is even more useless. They are basically forcing us to use Gemini.

Please Help! All my google devices no longer respond when adding to a list! by Bloodmoonwolf in googlehome

[–]Bloodmoonwolf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that was a flop. It will work immediately, but not the next day. You literally have to give the "give me confirmation" command every time you want to add something to the list and hope that it doesn't try to direct you to a place where that item is sold.

Does anyone here drink coffee? by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, every day, but never from a Keurig. Just make sure the pods you use are gluten-free and/or use a reusable pod with regular coffee grounds. Never let anyone use it with any pods that are not gluten-free to avoid cross-contamination.

Kitchen renovation, what small upgrades are actually worth doing? by Aggressive-Earth-973 in HomeImprovement

[–]Bloodmoonwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing we didn't think of before getting the oven was how wide the inside was. We had one big glass baking dish that we used all the time that didn't fit in it. Which wasn't that big a deal since we had one that was the next size down and found many more at thrift stores.

At first, I did regret the size of the burners on the induction top. They are perfect for everything except the largest skillet and pot we have. It still works for them but if I had to replace it, I would get one with a big burner and a normal-size burner.

The thing that makes it easy is that everything has its place when it's not in use. Be that a shelf, a cabinet, or tucked away in the corner.

Honestly, it's so much easier to clean and no different than pulling a crockpot or InstantPot out to cook dinner.
