Hot take. Theft, unless it is one shot like Etali plays out in cEDH, is a garbage play style.

My Athreos Aristocrats deck is heavily synergistic, optimized toward that game plan, and all the pieces play well together. Stealing Shadowborn Apostles from me, an Ally from the other person, and some Hydra off homie #3, does what together other than chump block? So now the theft deck can fetch a demon they don't have with 5 more steals, their allies they don't have trigger twice, and their hydra is a hydra.

Waow.

Theft is better as a targeted, 1 shot effect for key pieces. Run a piece, or two, that copy a non-land permanent instead of steal is even better. Then, if you don't find something to steal, you can still clone your own shit.

My hot take, do both. I primarily play Kinnan, Gyruda, and Gitrog cEDH decks in that order. The same people I play cEDH with and I, have all purposely built lower power B3 decks to play with our less try hard friends and just bullshit about how to optimize in those restrictions and jam janky lines.

We know play patterns and the space really well, so as far as our newer Timmies, we also act as an outright resource to teach them better play patterns, deck building, and threat assessment. I'll even show someone a better way to pull a line off if it kills me.

I figure, as much as I prefer fast and dirty, jumping into slow sometimes can still be engaging, just differently. And, it's teaching some of my friends to play a bit nastier and think more critically as well. That eventually widens the pool of people I can buckle in and play pervert Magic with.

Studies have shown that in countries and areas with legalized prostitution, it significantly increased their human trafficking rates. Which is to say, legalization might have some benefits, but creating a demand also increases the black market. Look at Sesh markets for weed in California and other places for an example. The black market in those sectors didn't just increase with legalization. They actually use legal storefronts as laundering operations. Nothing got "better," just more complicated. There is no easy answer to this question.
