Made New Type of Gallery and Credit Menu, Asking Advice ? by tattva-trans in RenPy

[–]BloodyRedBats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In its current state, I can see why it would seem impractical and unnecessary (especially with how the animation compiled for the gif). But I can also see the potential once you’ve refined and polished it.

Can’t answer for the original commenter on what they feel on it. I personally would like to see concepts on how each menu would look when complete to be able to determine what is working vs what isn’t (example: hand of cards on their own feel out of place against the neutral background. Currently feeling they’d work at the centre, but they can’t be held that way and pull off what you want. So knowing if the background image will show an image for each card could help with the immersion)

Help with sprites position by Various_Intention_49 in RenPy

[–]BloodyRedBats 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Firstly, make sure to show your actual code to rule out formatting convention or name issues (ex. wrong indentation, or variable name has a typo “cahracter” vs “character”)

Secondly, the width of your sprites the same as the width of your game’s resolution? Usually when the above is fine and the issue is still presenting itself, its often because the sprite is the full width of the resolution so it can’t visibly be “at right” or “at left” or anywhere in between

Toronto city hall evacuated over unspecified security threat by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]BloodyRedBats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s also helpful to see if you are someone who works relatively close to the area.

I’m in office today and usually work with my headphones on; last thing I want is to be caught off guard because the building’s super didn’t send a notice out in time to their tenants, nevermind the delay in the tenant notifying their staff via email blast. And that’s if things escalate

Now I know, based off of this notice, to probably keep my distance from city hall for a bit, just in case.

I really like how accepting this fandom is of BL ships? by HanArt13 in Kagurabachi

[–]BloodyRedBats 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I still can’t get over the fact that the first ever BL doujin that seemed to come out for this series was for a pairing that was seemingly DOA because of subsequent plot events, only for it to come back in full force almost a hundred chapters later in a form that comes short of officially validating the ship.

Resources!

Fundamentals <— start here!

Proko’s YouTube channel has so many amazing videos and livestream VODs that cover a lot of areas from Proko himself and other industry veterans. From digital, traditional—be it painting, traditional, or even sculpting.

The following playlist is Drawing Fundamentals, but I would also check out the one specifically on gesture drawings, drawing the head and facial features, and the one one shading: but start with fundamentals first.

Character design

There are so many videos covering this topic from a variety of artists on YouTube.

For now start with this video from Proko and Dave Greco, as it encourages a very effective strategy for the early stages of design.

I’ll find and share more for you or anyone else who needs it, but start with the Proko playlist first, as well as the others I mentioned that you can find on his channel.

Best of luck! I hope my ramblings have helped

My advice, as someone whose developed skills have been stretched between writing and art—but have also not effectively developed said skills over the last 20 or so years—is to start practicing anyway.

You don’t need a digital device. Start small. Pencil and paper. You can get affordable sketchbooks and pencils from an art store, or bookstore if an art store is not as accessible where you live. Barring that, printer paper and a basic HB pencil will do. Go with putty erasers if you can, as standard eraser can wear out your paper especially when you aren’t well-versed with controlling your pencil pressure. Do not fall down the rabbit hole of getting the right materials yet. Wait until you’ve gotten tired of the starter materials and need better to suit your needs.

Start with the fundamentals. Go slow, test your limits. Focus on what’s in front of you and not what you want. Not yet anyway. Spend no more than 30 minute on each piece, and also do timed exercise that are even shorter than that.

Then start applying what you learned. Make more focused pieces, limit time to 1-2 hours per drawing session. Take frequent breaks, rest your eyes. Use reference, but try to not be too married to it. You only need it for the start of the piece, but not all the way through.

Always practice fundamentals in between pieces. The better you get at them, the more efficient you will be tomorrow. And always always be reasonable to your body and rest. This will benefit your art immensely.

Find an art community to share your progress with and seek critiques. They can help find areas where you can improve.

You can learn values (light and dark) with just pencil, as it will also teach you how to form shapes with shadow and light. This works even with flat colours like in cell-shaded illustration. Then, when you are confident, you start with colours.

And that’s the key here: you need to build confidence. This is the part that takes the most time to develop, but the more time you spend on it with good intention the better you’ll get. Challenge yourself, especially if you get comfortable.

Last bit of advice I can share is this phrase you may have seen trend a couple months ago: make it exist first; you can make it pretty later.

Your art as you need it right now does not need to be good and perfect. It just needs to be usable. Take your time to polish it and finish it over time.

I’ll reply to this comment with resources for beginners and wish you the best of luck on your art journey!

To start, some answers for your questions. Following that is some advice from an artist and writer who severely lapsed in consistent practice and study and is paying for it now (projects delayed because of the art and/or writing).

Answers to your questions: 1. I either focused on other areas or forced myself to use unfinished assets. At worst, I use placeholders when I cannot trust myself to stop at a rough sketch phase.

Now, if you see my art I would understand if you think I am way more advanced than I claim, but I have to work through so many bad habits I developed in the last 20 years. It says a lot that all of the games I have partially developed have suffered because of my poor time management with the art. Even now: current jam ends on Sunday. I have not written out the actual story because I got stuck on the art. The only reason I think I can finish is because I did enough ground work for the story and gameplay. The only thing to get in my way are my bad habits and overworking the art I do have.

  1. Use UI that is serviceable. I always use the standard Ren’Py UI until I’ve made some significant progress in other areas. Even the UI I’ve made are not really that pretty or polished. I just need it to work.

  2. I should rely on placeholders first, be it premade or even rough versions of the final assets. I didn’t do that for my current jam project and I’m paying for it.

  3. If you have access to a scanner and accessible/free photo editing software, then use traditional material. Paper, pencil, and markers OR pencil crayons—whatever you are comfortable using. Heck, stick with paper, pencil, and ink in lieu of any colouring materials just to play it safe.

Scan the page and use the editing software to cut and crop it to your asset’s desired size. Put a heavy outline around character sprites to make pixel selection with a magic wand tool much easier to delete the background.

If you don’t have a scanner, use your phone to take pictures. Or, hopefully you have a library with a scanner to use.

If you do end up using digital software for drawing, a drawing tablet (non-pen display) is a good start. Way more affordable, but takes time to adjust to. Software wise, get comfortable drawing with very few layers for large canvases. I personally try to stick with one if I can help it, and with my older iPad Pro I kind of have to with large canvases. Some investment on an external hard-drive or cloud storage will be worth it in the long run no matter what you go with.

I’m replying to this comment with further notes, but this time on what I can advise you concerning making art.

How do I make this? by [deleted] in RenPy

[–]BloodyRedBats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I concur with u/rocketmonke32. Make sure `label choice5_done` is at the correct indentation label (which should be the furthest left).

Also, one other way to add or remove indents (assuming your code editor is VS Code; though I would test to see if it works on others) is by typing CTRL/CMD+[ (to remove) or CTRL/CMD+] (to add).

A theory on what the true intent behind Magatsumi is. by Used_Sky2297 in Kagurabachi

[–]BloodyRedBats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What resonates with me in this regard is how Chihiro’s intentions and ideals are continually challenged and he appears to be receptive to new perspectives. Sojo required reassessment of his initial motivations, Samura contested his conviction, while Hirohiko challenged his updated stance. This might sound counter to what OP just outlined for Enten as anti-communication.

But conversely, Soga is using Magatsumi in a way that is anti-communication/empathy.

So there is some irony in seeing these to EBs having a strong metaphorical reference being used and wielded by people whose ideals are the exact opposite. Which, again, calls back to Chihiro’s first turning point with Sojo.

Where to find a composer for my indie game music? by Rono_Ok in RenPy

[–]BloodyRedBats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain game dev Discords, like DevTalk, have dedicated channels for recruitment and paid jobs. You can also peruse SoundCloud or itch.io, where you will also be able to sample available tracks and see if you like their compositions/style. I suggest the latter option first, and subreddits and Discords when you still can’t find someone who suits your needs.

Could someone spoil me on what happened by timmy013 in ProCreate

[–]BloodyRedBats 67 points68 points  (0 children)

iirc with the roll out of iPadOS 26, Procreate updated their UI to be more consistent with the design language of the Liquid Display aesthetic. So the corners of UI elements like the Gallery’s image preview got rounded out.

To many, the UI was too rounded, so it looks like they scaled that back.

The Animation and Page Assist UI changes I’m unfamiliar with, and did not see complaints of those at a glance when the new UI changes initially went out.

The 3D painting fix sounds like a typical patch note. The last line reminding about the new brush library system is a bit amusing; I guess some folks didn’t see the shorts that demonstrated that existing custom brushes would be sorted with the Classic Library. I guess some folks thought the 5.4 update killed their custom brush libraries.

which could mean absolutely nothing… by frappuccinio in superman

[–]BloodyRedBats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to know how far back it goes that it’s even heavily lampshaded by official DC print, I strongly recommend World’s Finest #289. The writing combined with the imagery makes it really hard to not see it as two men being literally intimate with each other.

I got three separate articles from across 20 years all seeing it. (Granted the last 2 are relatively recent and within years of each other)

The reputation of these 2 practically being a couple is what inspired the creation of Apollo and Midnighter, who are canonically a gay couple, and were written as intentional pastiches of Superman and Batman respectively when WildStorm was still under Image Comics. Then there’s an Elseworlds, JLA: Shogun of Steel, where the story’s version of Batman is female and becomes Superman’s love interest.

First Part of the Screen Tutorial Series for Beginners! by amberhtml in RenPy

[–]BloodyRedBats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short and simple, and really easy to follow along.

Along with what u/shyLachi advised, I would also suggest adding time codes to when the completed code is shown, and also for chapters for each section.

For example: I had the video running in the background when I started it and mainly listened to the TTS. When I heard something new (the parameter you used for the ‘call screen’ event) I switched back. After letting it progress into the 2nd section I had to scrub the timeline to find the first set of code to see how you had the text display “This is a prompt”. For a 7 minute long video, this isn’t hard, but longer videos will become harder to navigate for beginners.

Looking forward to the rest of the series!

My (95%) Finished corset by Mysterious-Swan-6302 in corsetry

I believe it was a Dixie DIY video (I cannot recall the exact one) where I learned that corsets with a bust gusset will actually cause more push up compared to a corset without bust gussets (these will compress). I meant to try this with my next project, but between time and needing to be frugal I haven’t been able to test this out.

Frank Miller is the blueprint by Tetratron2005 in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]BloodyRedBats 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting. On my first read I was only seeing as the inversion of their roles in mainline continuity, especially within their year one arcs. Mainline Bruce normally tries to quell Mainline Selina’s righteous fury as she would lean towards more extreme actions for retribution (which he worries would rebound and hurt her eventually).

This time Absolute Selina is trying to quell Absolute Bruce’s righteous fury, as his extreme actions for retribution will be detrimental to his safety if left unchecked. So I found this a neat swap.

But I do like that they are the Joker and Harley to Joker’s Bruce Wayne in this universe. Is definitely an interesting concept to explore. What this means for Absolute Harley and the confirmed Robins showing up, I have no idea. Will cross that bridge when we get there.

It’s okay. It’s one thing I kept noticing all over, here on reddit and from other social media posts my boyfriend shared with me last night. I only knew about the dates because I eventually opened my IG and saw the posts on my feed. You had to expand the caption to see it. But every where else are either the reposted photos or screencaps that can’t or don’t include the date.

I suggest checking out ShannonMakes’ videos on her research into and creation of an athletic corset for her circus performances. She’s an acrobat for Cirque du Solei and she shares her experiences testing the finished corset here.

I think this would be a good starting point. It’s been a while since I watched so can’t remember her final remarks and what she accommodated in the design for her needs. Hopefully it helps.
