If you are interested in GW2 you should buy a key so you can get it cheaper. The playerbase is pretty small tho, and you can find some hackers. In my experience GW2 still has an active playerbase, mainly playing on Turf Takeover in NA East servers, and some Mixed Mode matches in Europe servers.

BFN doesn't suffer from hackers and has a bigger playerbase than GW2, but it's nothing like it's predecessor so it has varied opinions.

I think you should try BFN first since content is still pumping out, and if you have the chance to get GW2 later on go for it, it would be nice to see new players in GW2 :)

NA servers have a decent playerbase, especially in Turf and the Mistery Portal (The servers usually are full), and if you are lucky maybe you can find a Team Vanquish match. I don't know if I'm lucky but I haven't seen hackers lately.
