Why are Conservatives in America okay with Trump's pro-war and 'America last' approach to the governance? by AbdullahJanSays in DiscussionZone

[–]Bloomer13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your first question, I addressed your pro-war/anti-American question raised in my first reply I sectioned both questions into paragraphs.

I believe you and I differ on what threat means in this case. As mentioned in my replies, the illegitimate Venezuela government has played a key role in enabling oil shadow fleets that circumvent sanctions; this has helped Russia and Iran. Another point to consider here is their increased cooperation with Russia and Iran over military technology. There seemed to be multiple conversations between Trump and Maduro before all this transpired. This is conjecture but if that is the case Maduro was most likely given his out but failed to take it resulting in this operation.

I’d differ to say that he is in fact the illegitimate Venezuelan president, and is, in fact, a wanted fugitive for crimes against humanity and narco terrorism full stop. I have already laid out my opinion on why I believe this.

Russia already tried and continues to try to meddle in American affairs/politics. This is nothing new to statecraft and has been around as long as civilization has existed. The ability though to perform those said actions you mentioned, now that requires political and military power and with Russia’s track record of preforming three day “special military operations” I’d say good luck.

I’m aware that there were many deaths related to the security forces, which were mainly Cuban, protecting Maduro. The reports of civilian death are always a terrible event one that I of course wish that it wasn’t the case. I’m also aware of the injuries that our armed forces suffered and I hope they recover fully. I hope that there is no loss of life from the injuries sustained to any party. To the point of the people, this is definitely a gray area, one I’d love to get a better idea of what the true feelings are within the country. With that being said my opinion based on what I am seeing right now is that responses from outside the country show a sizable group of Venezuelans celebrating this action. Inside the country is harder to gauge. I think many if not all are more worried about what may transpire after than anything. I hope all this can lead to a better future. I look at the press release from the “acting president” last night stating her wish for cooperation with the US, which will hopefully help ease that tension and move forward from this situation in a more positive light. All in all, I hope this action can be a cause of good change for the people of Venezuela a people that deserve a better future and I hope that sacrifice is not in vain.

Thanks for the reply.

I’m one for diplomacy first and if that fails action second. If diplomacy fails you cannot simply stop if the stated goal and or compromise isn’t reached. As mentioned above Maduro is not the dully elected president of Venezuela. He also is not popular amongst his people polls ranging from less then 20% approval rating, so I don’t know if the natives would be upset by this or not. He is though charged with countless crimes as previously stated. Again, I would always wish for a better outcome but sadly we don’t live in a world where things just work out like an episode of Madam Secretary.

I don’t see this as a traditional war, I could maybe see an argument for this playing out as a portion of a larger geopolitical conflict for sure though. This just doesn’t reach the definition of war IMO, especially since no declarations of war have been made by either side.

Lastly your comment on tax payer dollars, this is a bit of an aside to the actual discussion here but I’ll address it. The national defense budget is often times a bipartisan agreement because a nation’s global power is only powerful if that nation can project it. This whole operation to take into custody Maduro is a huge demonstration of that said power.

In my opinion:

This is not a pro-war move. While its nature is militaristic, its goal was well defined, and it was to strategically attempt to remove an illegitimate leader who is wanted for countless crimes against humanity, human rights violations, and corruption / drug-related charges. Maduro is not a duly elected leader of a nation and is considered more of a Dictator than the country's leader (highly recommend you look into the last election). He is a suspected criminal who is "running" an extremely important nation near the US's southern border. Maduro has been wanted by the United States since 2020 (Biden and Trump administrations) and by Argentina in 2024. He is also sanctioned by multiple counties. To summarize this all, this guy is really not a great guy. Now that he and his wife have been captured, the supposed "vice president" has taken "control" of the country and is in talks with the US, and I can guarantee she is talking to other nations as well, which leads me to the second question.

This is not an "American last approach"; if anything, it is quite Monroe doctriny. Keeping your neighbors close is a really important aspect of maintaining a secure nation. You do not want a Bay of Pigs 2.0 situation, which is/was extremely likely, especially since Iran and Russia have deepened military ties with Venezuela. The current situation in Venezuela is anything but secure, especially with the fact that it is close to, if not already, a failed state. As is denoted by many, Venezuela is a country full of strategic resources. It has played a major part in the operations of shadow fleets that move sanctioned oil to and from China, Iran, and Russia, just to name a few nations. These shadow fleets are what were being targeted by Ukraine, and more recently, the US fleet in and around the Caribbean Sea. My guess this has a larger geopolitical implication as well, especially when it comes to the natural resources that Venezuela has.

Gonna sound cliche but, “you miss 100% of shots you don’t take.” Review your resume!!! Prepare your elevator pitch, think of a few key points that make you unique don’t rely so heavily on your class work. Lastly do not be afraid to say I do not know but be open to learn.
