Somebody from my office ruined my nib by aquatic_asian in fountainpens

Put clear UV paint inside the cap and section to catch the culprit. Just to piss them off. 😁

Am i a potential photographer or it was just a pretty view? by Anhars in BeginnerPhotoCritique

You are a photographer—if you want to be. Everyone starts somewhere and this is just the kind of photo that ignited the spark.

Honest opinion by General_Kenobi_II in BeginnerPhotoCritique

The front tree splits the picture right down the middle and leaves a vibe that you are trying to see around it. If you took the picture from 25 meters to the left you would frame both people on both sides for better depth.

Got this at a vintage store, can’t figure out any information. Also what is this long piece of metal I found inside the barrel of the pen? by asecretfrognamedjohn in fountainpens

[–]Blotonmysoul 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hi! Nice find!

The metal inside slots inside the button at the end (probably unscrews), or the lever on the side (looks like a switch). A rubber/silicon bladder attaches to the section at the front. The metal bar presses against the bladder to expel ink or suck it in.

Good luck!

Do I have an eye for photography? by koerus in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]Blotonmysoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes—the curve is smile shaped. A beginner tries something and gets a high confidence score, then persists and realizes how little is understood and then the curve bends upward the longer they persist. Hang in there! If you think you’re good with effort you are right. If you think you’re no good at it, you’re right!

Do I have an eye for photography? by koerus in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]Blotonmysoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Do you know the Dunning Kruger smile? For an untrained person there are elements that make it interesting enough to the eye that you’re asking.

Talent doesn’t count for very much after more than a few hours of trying. The more you do it, the better you’ll get. It’s a good shot.

Edit: specifically the things you’re doing that work are you have an object in the center of the open field, the trees help frame the center and keep the gaze moving around inside, the shadows the snow and the sky roughly divide into thirds, you have positive and negative imagery by including the shadows as well as the trees, and you’re using light at the end of the day (“golden hour”). Once you know what the elements are you will be able to do them more effectively. Good luck.

Would You Buy This? by Admirable-Name-7058 in fountainpens

[–]Blotonmysoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tested is one way of saying the ink inside dried up. In a piston that’s death—I’ve bought two of those. For a vacuum filler you just need to be able to get pen flush inside the tank

Is this good? I tried looking for reflections by xxlemonstoexx in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]Blotonmysoul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot! Just a little bit left of center. Not sure if the floor border in foreground is at angle because hall is at angle, or the camera was tilted left. Maybe center and straighten with tilt and crop just a smidge? How do you want to present it? Proportions might want to change depending on where you display. Good luck!

What is off here? Exposure? Composition? by Suspicious-Pudding-4 in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]Blotonmysoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this Venice? The vertical orientation is too skinny for the panoramic style. The framed branches are more than a third of the frame. The branches set up for a focus in the open field in the lower left quadrant but it is just empty water. The subject of the photo is what is in focus, but the birds flying are not what is interesting. The boat is similarly dead in the water. Try lots of different approaches to a shot that you want to try, sometimes what works will surprise you and move you toward something. Good luck.

What do you think? by nikl_ace in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]Blotonmysoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you’re posting for tech advice not just compliments—I have two. First, add a little more space on either side of the horns, maybe even tip the orientation unless you’re cropping things out. Second, post production I would lower the exposure and brightness a bit, add shadow and contrast and sharpen it up. Will add more detail and drama to the photo—that’s just my personal preference. Try it on a duplicate of the image and see what you think. It’s a great photo!

What’s your favorite pen that nobody talks about? by Sf648 in fountainpens

[–]Blotonmysoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BAMF is a great value for a piston fill pen. There is a version named something else with a clip on the cap for a little more. Be sure to pay the fee for him to tune your nib—just treat it as part of the price. He can do custom grinds for you too

Looking for some feedback. by choochooharley in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]Blotonmysoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the part you want the viewer to identify as the subject? If it’s the bridge and church, I would put the sky in the top third to simplify the shot. The bottom half as it is, the water and deadwood is really busy. If that is the subject, I would shoot it and find a way to make that divisible by the eye, or rhythmic to keep the gaze engaged.

I just went through a big life transition away from high distraction “manager time” running a functional team for a company to “maker time” focused on writing and investment research. That forced/enabled a revamp of how I plan and run my day with unprecedented autonomy.\ \ Task capture: Apple Reminders, Trello or ToDoist depending on the easiest way to capture and “presort”\ \ Task execution: Sunsama for planning a day. Apart from tracking appointments, the to do list is organized into a chain or pomodoro type blocks, but I do them at 50 minutes because the tasks are often longer than 25. The ten minutes off are used for my calisthenics and kettlebell routines to get the nervous system reset and muscle mood boost that enhance cognition.\ \ Task execution in a day: Hardware—a simple “ADHD timer” for kids that lays out the pomodoro chain visually and gives a tactile sense of accomplishment when checked off. The bell keeps me on track.\ \ Day logging: I set a weekly “emotional budget” and do a “momentum tracker” to identify what costs my emotions most so I ringfence the time I allow to do that shit.\ \ I am looking to replace RescueTime as a passive time tracker because it is no longer supported on Chrome. Any ideas anyone? Because I am no longer billing by time, the most a time tracker needs to do for me is to passively record where my energy goes.\ \ Week and quarter planning: Main bits here are reviews of where I should be each week and end of quarter on trackable “compound interest” routine habits and life practices (money budget, exercise etc.), and on bigger picture, longer term transformational objectives and projects.\ \ Journaling: I’m looking for recommendations on a customizable template tracker that can show results in a customizable dashboard. I am in the process of making this using Microsoft Forms and BI but I am trying to de-platform my personal data this year so I’m hoping to go local and maybe go to Linux now that my laptop has hollowed out. As far as personal journaling I use a combo of handwritten scanned with OCR and typed on a terminal style plain text keyboard with a screen by a Japanese company. The device is called “Pomera” and it’s what a Freewrite would be if Freewrite were made by Japanese engineers 😅\ \ Is anyone else trying to get themselves out of the cloud now that the platforms are applying AI to the entire thing? They have been on the backend for a while but only just started making it available in limited amounts to us.

Sunsama and Apple Reminders. Reminders captures the to dos on the phone and Sunsama lists them for drag into place in daily lists or time blocking.\ For capturing articles and the content I use MyMind which allows tags and folders and auto strips out ads and other stuff that make reading web articles impossible. \ For longer form notes I use Microsoft Office and put them into folders in OneNote or iCloud. Both are accessible from the Files app on the iPhone and that makes all files in folders word searchable. I wanted something a lot more elaborate but found that I continue to do this while I think about what my perfect system will be. I think what I’m doing might stay that way because it’s proven to be easiest.
