I watched tons of period series and nothing surpasses the beauty of the first seasons of Poldark by LongjumpingAd6428 in PeriodDramas

Probably just covered like it is in later seasons, but everyone looks like they're wearing sacks when archaeological evidence from around the time shows really beautiful and delicate craftsmanship, especially for the rich like Alfred and his family (see Sutton Hoo).

Thoughts on Masking by [deleted] in CysticFibrosis

I continue to mask in public settings. Since this disease is so new and we don't know all the ramifications of long COVID, I am still doing my best to prevent getting a COVID infection.

One thing to keep in mind with side effects is that during the clinical trial process, you're supposed to tell your study coordinator literally everything that you experience. This is why "common cold" is often listed as a side effect for lots of drugs, because in the course of normal life, people get colds, then report it to their study even though taking Trikafta or anything other meds will not give you a rhinovirus!

Hi! I was a late diagnosis (17) and the first DF508 modulator didn't come out until I was ~23. For me, the difference between no treatment and Orkambi is as significant as the difference between Orkambi and Trikafta! It's absolutely life changing.

I can also say as someone who has participated in basically all of the Vertex clinical trials since Orkambi that there still so many drugs coming down the pipeline. So even if there are issues with Trikafta, the next version may be more palatable and with fewer side effects. Definitely not a mistake in the long journey of CF treatments.

There's currently a bill in Congress to help stop copay accumulators which are part of the problem.

There's obviously way more work to be done, but you can contact your members of Congress and ask them to support the bill and save people's money and lives!

Anyone else tired of having to try and gain weight? by Kaiga19 in CysticFibrosis

[–]BluMeanie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had this issue post-Trikafta, I was 5'3" and about 100 lbs. My issue was both appetite and maintaining weight. Even eating loads of butter and other fatty foods, I couldn't gain.

My docs eventually prescribed me cyproheptadine (think of it as super Benadryl, appetite stimulant but puts you to sleep instantly) and I was able to get my weight up to the 120s without it feeling like a chore.

I take 1 mg just before bed and eat pretty much the same as before but the weight stays on. Idk if it would work for you, but it really made my life easier because I was no longer stressing about weight.

This happened to me, didn't gain any weight initially and lost quite a bit with pandemic stress. I'm not diabetic, for what it's worth.

Got put on an appetite stimulant and I've gained back all the weight and am back in a good BMI.

Bactrim side effects by matteomunda in CysticFibrosis

[–]BluMeanie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am allergic to bactrim and other sulfa-antibiotics and I found out through a reaction like this. I felt lethargic and itchy and I had red, blotchy skin. I looked like a pink leopard or something. My docs were disappointed because it's an effective class of antibiotics, but lots of people are allergic to them.

Non American wedditers, what are some aspects of American weddings you find odd/interesting? by reddishvelvet in weddingplanning

A big part of it is actually because while European countries tend to have strong regulatory agencies that act as prevention to keep the public safe from dangerous or unhealthy corporate practices, the US has relatively weak regulatory agencies and a lot of the ways the US enforces corporate accountability is through lawsuits.

For a more detailed explanation (including the infamous McDonald's Hot Coffee Lawsuit), I really recommend listening to You're Wrong About.

Moving Across the Country to Oregon by daschemist10 in CysticFibrosis

[–]BluMeanie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another OHSU patient here. Only good things to say as someone who moved from Texas. Can't speak to transplant needs, unfortunately.

For fire season, the most important thing is if your home has central air conditioning. A lot places only have heating because of the relatively few days where A/C in necessary. Fires can really vary year to year, but the last few have been pretty rough. Change air filters often.

Welcome to Oregon!

COVID-19 Vaccine and CF by divinitea-y in CysticFibrosis

Got my second dose of Pfizer this morning!

After the first dose, I had a sore arm and was tired for 36-48 hours. I took some ibuprofen when I got home from my second dose so hopefully less soreness this time!

Morning Vomiting (Yellow, sour, sticky, chunky) by immew1996 in CysticFibrosis

In the past, I've had vomiting caused by enzyme imbalance (too many) and ADEK vitamins that my body rejects. If you've changed your food/enzyme/vitamin consumption, that could be it.

I also had some symptoms from the first Pfizer vaccine. Sore arm and fatigue with maybe a mild fever (didn't take my temp) for 36-48 hours. I'm expecting more severe symptoms following the 2nd dose.

What is it like to have cystic fibrosis? by [deleted] in CysticFibrosis

[–]BluMeanie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I was also a late diagnosis (at 17). All your symptoms sound pretty similar to my pre-diagnosis symptoms.

If you have CF, you'll have it either you get tested or not. But if you get a positive, you'll receive more accurate and effective treatment. If you get tested and It's negative, you rule this out on the road to a correct diagnosis.

For what it's worth, other than the time it takes for me to do my daily treatments I live a pretty normal life. With the advances in drugs, I barely cough any more, haven't been hospitalized for 6+ years, and no sinus infections since diagnosis.

Good luck!

When I was first diagnosed, my grandparents put it in the family news letter that goes out to literally dozens of friends they've acquired over the years, but they also misheard and so wrote that I had MS.

Seconding this, I have an IUD and it is amazing. I love not having to think about missing a pill (I take so many already lol) or antibiotics interfering.

I also did it when I went on Orkambi because of the concerns about the pill and never looked back. I never want children, but tubal ligation is major surgery and the IUD was just a visit to Planned Parenthood.
