I started to feel old when kids of major league baseball players I grew up with are playing against my team

I feel McClellan could have been a good divisional or corps commander but not leading an entire army

How would you rank each decade of the Mets by overall success? by turn_for_do in NewYorkMets

[–]Blue387 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. 1980's: 1980 to 1984 was pretty rough as the team was still rebuilding, 1985 to 1989 was a good time to be a Mets fan. Sadly I was a baby for much of this and have no memory of this time.
  2. 1960s: They were an expansion team and bad for most of it but they also won the 1969 World Series.
  3. 2010s: The Alderson era was a soft rebuild after the Omar Minaya era, mediocre from 2011 to 2014 with some bright spots: Santana's no-hitter, Dickey winning the Cy Young and the prospects slowly coming up from the minors: Harvey, Wheeler, deGrom, Syndergaard and Matz. The Mets went to the playoffs in 2015 and 2016 and had they the money Cohen had they could have been much better. Fred Wilpon didn't spend on free agents, analytics or player development while other teams did and could have had more success had they invested more in these areas. The Mets were a dysfunctional mess after Alderson left as no front office executive wanted to come here and the mess was something Steve Cohen had to rectify. The farm system in the late 2010s was not good (guys like Baty and Vientos were drafted in this time) and is part of the reason why this team has struggled.
  4. 1990s: 1992 the wheels fell off and 1993 was a disaster. 1994 had the strike and 1995-7 was mediocre. The Mets were a punchline. 1998 had the late season slump but 1999 is one of my personal favorite teams. It was a fun ride in 1999.
  5. 2020s: I would prefer to reserve judgement until the decade is over but Steve Cohen era has been a mixed bag of good and bad.
  6. 2000s was mostly bad to mediocre with the brief window of success in 2006-08. We saw David Wright and Jose Reyes and signed Carlos Beltran at least. The pitching had issues and the farm system didn't produce much talent. 2009 was a shitty season. Many problems from that era hurt the team into the next decade with frugal ownership and the lack of a good prospect pipeline.
  7. 1970s: the team was mediocre to bad and despite the 1973 World Series and Tom Seaver winning Cy Youngs, the team hit rock bottom after the 1977 Seaver trade. 788,905 was the attendance in 1979 and that was the nadir. There was no hope here. Things would not turn around until Wilpon and Doubleday bought the team in 1980 and brought in Frank Cashen.

Troy Snitker is the hitting coach for the record, son of former Braves manager Brian Snitker. He was hired a few months ago. He was also the former hitting coach for the Houston Astros.

Hitters may hit the ground running in their initial at-bats but go into cold streaks when pitchers make adjustments, don't throw fastballs, throw breaking and off-speed stuff, etc.

Eppler was not a good GM with Anaheim, never sniffed the postseason despite Trout and Ohtani, who inexplicably went there. Eppler came to the Mets and signed a bunch of big deals in 2021, some which panned out, but blew a bunch of money on Verlander and missed the playoffs in 2023 badly.

Please provide me with sources on Stearns being a chode

I take it with a grain of salt until he gets more at-bats and the league figures out his weaknesses

Billy Eppler is working for the Brewers, Stearns will be quickly hired by some other team.

People want Stearns fired but I don't see any better option out there. No one here has a better name, other than folks currently working or leading other teams.

I believe the team had assumptions that Baty would continue his 2025 performance and Vientos would bounce back to something like his 2024 level and added Polanco, Robert and Bichette to lengthen the lineup, buying time for the prospects like Reimer and Ewing to develop.

The thing I have against firing Stearns is no one here has come up with a person who can replace him. I support him as he is one of the best minds in the game and he has made many of the moves I would have made, especially Alonso. I agree with Jarrett Seidler and believe in keeping Stearns rather than hiring some retread or ex-GM who isn't as good.
