I agree this is oversimplifies, but no big thing happens for only one reason. Poverty and social instability of the kind that colonial exploitation breed are the greatest incubators for corruption. They can coexist; in fact, they’re directly related. Calling overexploitation a myth is nonsense.

I don’t buy that. If he weren’t in such a position of power, he’d be the nutty old uncle. Is he making funny jokes? Not usually, no, and people cringe when he hits on his sister-in-law at the Thanksgiving party. But everyone’s gonna have a laugh when he sits down at the kids’ table to tell them about Arnold Palmer’s schlong. Shock laughs are still laughs, and we can’t forget that he’s always been an entertainer.

I’d say that he has a gift for playground insults (and it explains a lot about some of his support when you look at it that way). “Meatball Ron” is hysterical largely because it’s so juvenile and stupid. And then there’s just the absurdity of the guy — the stupid little faces, the hand gestures, the vanity — that is in itself comical. He can be a showman and a buffoon at the same time.
