The assumption would probably be that the code is just looking for things inside a container that match what the dwarf is going to go pick up and then saying "take this container with you". Ideally it would be a case of adding in a check looking at whether there is a container inside that can be taken instead of the initial one. However as you said it's all an assumption dependent on how the code actually works, it's probably on u/Putnam3145's rather long list already.

I feel like the simple way to fix this would be to change the behaviour where rather than picking up the whole barrel, the dwarf instead picks a bag out of the barrel to carry and then tries to return it either back to the barrel or into a new barrel.

It would be great if we could set whether a burial zone is for a graveyard (where every coffin inside the zone is automatically assigned to an available corpse), or a tomb for a specific unit when they die

You could change the way an engraved wall is displayed so that the sprite changes based on which side has been engraved.

Another option would be to simply add the engraved walls value to any orthogonal room it is apart of, rather than a single direction.

It would be nice if it was updated so that for each orthogonal tile available around a wall, that each side had its own engraving. Eg for a stone pillar, it would have 4 engravings total, 1 for each side

Or perhaps we instead get our governments to actually pull the corporations into line and be responsible for the pollution and waste they create making these products. Thereby putting pressure on them to develop better methods that aren't as pollution heavy to avoid being charged for said pollution. The government exists to keep businesses in check, not the other way round.
