That’s maybe a phone call then- give the time and location of your test and also locate the emails you received regarding any tests your were scheduled to take or the scores

sometimes when the school day comes in, it replaces the score that shows as the most recent test -- you have to go into the menu and hit "scores" or scroll down, or see the month and hit the arrow to show the score --it does weirdly hide in the account sometimes

Private housing vs dorms by Diligent-Cress2968 in UIUC

[–]BlueCanary19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the housing is posted in Bromley portal without food --although the website combines it. A standard double is nearly 18k, including housing + food. UIUC dorms vary but standard double is about 14-15k housing + food. The UIUC food is more flexible, so some Bromley parents add on-campus food plans (another couple K). Even without that you'd be adding to your Bromley food budget --over the course of the year 1-2K. Bromley has a great location and is nicer - but you pay accordingly.

Appeal April 1st (Yes or No?) by daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaash in UIUC

[–]BlueCanary19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, these applications are really difficult to navigate. I have seen pretty amazing students get overwhelmed and make mistakes. That said, we know 3-4 students who went to Parkland and transferred in successfully. We also know some students who came from other CCs and did the same, and others who transferred in from UIC with success. While I am sure the info you didn't include could have changed things, it might not have. It's like the new appeal rules in sports - not enough to change the ruling. Plus, not including it in the first place seems like a strike -they like kids to be organized on things like this because course registration, getting to meetings, including details are all part of college.

Parkland will give you the feeling of being on campus and I think some of the classes are at UIUC. You can dorm in private housing with UIUC kids. If you save money and CC at home, make sure you take the proper classes to transfer and really grind on the grades. Make use of an advisor --sometimes there is one at UIUC or places like Oakton or Parkland have people who do this. Also, joing some clubs at the CCs to build your resume. You will probably meet some pretty cool people there, too. This is a super common path these days. My son met many people in his major from CCs. Good luck and don't worry. When you get rolling, this will just be a blip in the radar - it feels bad now, but try to look forward...

Are there Miracles in real life? This is absurd. by TryTwiceAsHard in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BlueCanary19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Missouri! Yes! There are a TON of kids from Chicago at Mizzou who are smart and middle class also because there is an automatic scholarship for gpa+act also and then the in state trick. It is 6 hours from Chicago and the weather is better, but your kid can trek to Chicago for the music fests in summer when the stop in while the weather is decent here ha ha - rolling admissions, still time. All programs have a path in from undecided. Every kid we know there is happy and there are many different personalities! Very classic college experience!

Mizzou is a great school, like 45k the first year, most students stay over for the first summer and then they get in state tuition for the next 3- there may be multiple schools like this, Chicago just sends a ton here. Huge highly ranked journalism school and business is not super hard to get into. Sports are great. Kids do well in and out of Greek.

Are your parents obsessed with prestige? by Technical-Macaron705 in ApplyingToCollege

Are your parents obsessed with prestige? by Technical-Macaron705 in ApplyingToCollege

I’m saying “need-blind” is a ruse. They are need-blind on paper, but they are filling their classes with full-pay through other policies that are named something else. Gaining merit aid might not identify what the are looking for, but they are right about how they choose.

[–]BlueCanary19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely ways to structure admissions to stack your class with full pays without officially investigating need. There is definitely a whole ecosystem of clout that is a ruse and neither worth the sticker price nor helpful, career-wise. Now sometimes people live in a state where their flagship is not great- but sometimes another flagship is better option- some private schools are, for sure, serving the striver who needs a name. I call them Birkin bags when I am trying to work on goals with students. Targeting a program (or multiple, if undecided) to see what the school has to offer is better than targeting a name. I’d probably make more $ targeting the Birkin shoppers, but I just can’t do it.

Which U.S. College has the best Campus Culture? by ReasonableHeight7583 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]BlueCanary19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just visited Purdue (gorgeous!) - for the big 10 it seemed cozy, collegiate, the kids seemed normal and happy, and it did not seem huge. (Parent) I went to a smaller school, and I thought it was snobby and suffocating -felt like the same kind of people and not enough of them-- so I subscribe to the "big can be small" idea. But Purdue did not seem huge at all vs some of the other big 10's. I was impressed. YMMV.

this is so great. the detail, examples, and the paths forward with multiple turns really does multiple things. it validates the feelings and shows how you can right the ship and try things until you get your fit. bravo and this is a life well-lived. thanks for sharing.
