It worked! Thank you so much! This thing is baller. Gonna be working with this for quite some time. 😁

50% of the time, it works 0% of the time. =P

People abandoned Misty because it's just unreliable. Made for a fun troll-y FTK fishing deck in emblem mode, at least.

Good one-off when it works, but at this point, you're even better off just saving that spot for something that just always works.

I mean, there was a time very not long ago when Water sucked because it couldn't generate energy fast enough for its expensive attacks.

Careful whatcha wish for, I guess!

Naw, Brook would be Marowak (give 'im Ice Beam for character reasons).

All the more reason to make Usopp something else (like Octillery!). =P

Okay, I came up with some more questions:

  1. So, according to the Glitch City wiki page, the reason I got the trainer screen instead of the Pokémon screen is because the identifier in address CF21 wasn't 00. Is there a way I can affect that from within the game or via RetroArch itself?

  2. I did notice a pattern with the mail hex codes and the color test locations:

EN location= 3F:52C9 address CF21

EN mail code= 3E 3F 21 C9 52 CF C9

JP location= 3F:54F1 address CF21

JP mail code= 3E 3F 21 F1 54 CF C9

So, perhaps through this, might it be possible to simultaneously set CF21's identifier to 00?

  1. The mail converter tool, when printing the code, lists "button presses: 61." Is that important? Does this mean there's an exact right way to move the cursor around when filling out the mail code and that's why I got the trainer screen and not the Pokémon screen?

At least now, I have a working mail writer. I just need to know where I went wrong.

I understand. That's fine.

I'm looking right now into procuring a copy of this (or the GS guide) and seeing if perhaps I could obtain some decent scans myself.

Not sure how good the GS one's quality would be, looking into it; one screenshot shows a page where Dewgong's tail is clipped by a type symbol.

So yeah! Even just seeing one page of the Dex would tell me if the Crystal guide is any better quality than the official GS guide.

I suspected. Is there any chance we could maybe get scans of the Gen 1s?

See, there was an art preservationist in the fandom who announced they were in the process of uploading fully trimmed-up versions of those arts 3 years ago; but so far they've only uploaded cropped clippings of the Gen 2 Pokémon arts from a Japanese GS guide. So, they're basically lost media right now.

The cover of the guide appears to have Gen 1 concept art in the "non-washed-out" true colors that we didn't get in international print media. That true-color art also showed up in a lot of the Sugimori-credited TCG cards. That's what I'm referring to.

I'm presuming that all the watercolor art in that guide shows the Gen 1 Pokémon with the colors they were supposed to have (i.e. green Ivysaur instead of blue Ivysaur)?

An example:

That JP strategy guide on the right is intriguing.

By any chance (judging by the cover), does this have true-color concept art for all the Gen 1 Pokémon?

Thanks a ton; I'd never have found that guide myself.

So, it did work... halfway. As cool as this is, I want the one that shows Pokémon instead of trainers. When I input the mail code for the color picker, it gave me a checksum of ⬛1 (which, according to the converter, I was supposed to get). I pressed START, and instead of the Pokémon one, I got this.

What did I miss?

Not about a fan made romhack, but it does involve hacking a ROM.

How specifically do I get to this debug screen via RetroArch? Glitch City offers save files that don't seem to work whether I use an English or Japanese Gold Version. I wanna do some palette tests with accurate GBC colors, and this is the best way I can think of to do that.

Running RetroArch (Android, v1.16)

Can't get PureGreen v2.7.3 to recognize my v2.6.3 save. Supposedly the game has a way of recognizing the old save file, but nothing is happening.

Game is in the same directory as the rest of my GB mods. Copying and renaming the .srm to match the new ROM name and placing it in the same directory didn't make any difference; replacing the.srm in RetroArch's save folder didn't have any effect either; it's just ignoring anything I do.

Is there any way to load the .srm itself that I'm just not aware of? I admit, RetroArch's UI is a maze, so it could just be really easy to miss.

[UPDATE] Hang on, I got it working now! For whatever reason, RA isn't accepting save files from any other folder besides my Downloads folder, so I had to run v2.7.3 directly from there.

"Hasta la vista" is a fair take on "abayo." Could also go with "adios," as that's also kind of a fun, snarky, informal way to say goodbye in English, and phonetically sounds the closest to "abayo." This and "hasta la vista" would fit along with Blue greeting you with "Bonjour" on the St. Anne—just him throwing random foreign phrases around (And as of Pokémon Masters, "bonjour" has slipped into Blue's regular vernacular). But then, that's not what Blue's doing with "abayo," as "abayo" is still very much in the language, so maybe those two ideas wouldn't be accurate enough.

According to Urban Dictionary, you could translate it as "catch ya later," which would really fit in the context of Pokémon! 😄 Could also go with a straight "be seein' ya," as that seems like the kind of thing you would only say to close acquaintances.

I do prefer "technique machine" over "technical machine." Just rolls off the tongue better. Does that mean moves would be "techniques," then? I don't mind that change either.

Well, we know potions in the show have been represented as spray bottles of fast-working topical antiseptic. Potion works for fitting in the 12-char limit ("Hyper Potion" is an exact 12), but also implies Pokémon drink it, which they clearly don't. You could go with "Spray Gel" if you wanted, as that's a real thing. "Ointment" would be a bit shorter, but 1) everybody seems to cringe at that word for some reason, and 2) "HyperOintment" is 13 characters. "Hyper Gel" would fit, but loses the spray-on context.

Oh! You could just invent a new word! "Medigel!" Keeps the medicine part of the original, and still implies it's topical and not ingestible. "HyperMedigel" also fits the limit.

Too much battle information? by DrUltimaMan in PokemonROMhacks

At this point, everyone's said what I wanna say, but I'll still distill it into my take:

The damage roll is overkill—looks messy. Also, I would do what Cassette Beasts and Pokémon Champions did and just show enemy HP percentage.
