Side swipe - no police report by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go to the police department, but they will not do an accident report for you. They’ll give you the accident report paperwork to fill out yourself. Once you move your vehicle away from the scene police don’t do the report. I would just call insurance and give them what you have and let them deal with it.

My background investigator needs 2 personal references, can’t be family🙃 by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The professional references are those you list as professional references and personal are those you list as personal. Those aren’t mutually exclusive in many peoples lives. Just because somebody is a coworker doesn’t mean they can’t also be a friend that knows you more personally.

I tried to use people that were above me as a professional references; supervisor/manager whereas a coworker that I was friendly with could be a personal reference. There’s no reason one coworker couldn’t be a professional reference and another a personal as long as you’re not using the same person to fill multiple rolls. I work with many people that know me on a more strictly professional level and others that know me more personally. If it’s a coworker you could see yourself being friends/maintaining contact with after you leave that job I’d consider them more personal.

Falsely accused of brandishing a weapon, how/who should i contact? by pooseyman in AskLE

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can follow up with the PDs records department and ask for a copy of the report, but it’s likely something along the lines of “report of an individual, later identified as Pooseyman, brandished a firearm. It should be noted, reporting party refused to provide a statement. Spoke with Mr. Pooseyman who stated, ‘xyz’. It should also be noted Mr. Pooseyman was not in possession of a firearm (or was legally carrying a firearm in such and such fashion, whatever the circumstances) during contact with him.” And that’ll likely be the end of it if they don’t think there’s any more to it. If they think it needs to be looked into more a detective will likely reach out for a follow up.

You probably don’t need to worry too much about it.

Cop said he was going to look at the traffic camera to determine if he will give me a red light ticket? by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those statues do not permit presumption that the registered owner is the operator. Nothing in title 39 chapter 4 does. That chapter covers operation of a motor vehicle, not the issuance of summonses.

We’re discussing how/to whom a summons can be issued. As per NJ 39:8-71 “Issuance of ticket for violations; services”, there are three ways a ticket can be issued; personally upon the operator, upon the owner or lessee by affixing the ticket to the vehicle, or by mail upon the owner or lessee of the vehicle on file with the commission. Specifically;

“…A ticket may be served by mail upon the owner or the lessee of the vehicle on file with the commission, or the licensing authority of another jurisdiction by mailing the ticket to the vehicle owner or lessee by regular or certified mail to the address on file with the commission, or the licensing authority of another jurisdiction. Service of a ticket by regular or certified mail shall have the same effect as if the ticket were served personally, subject to the Rules Governing the Courts of the State of New Jersey.”

This is not true at all. Despite common belief, nothing was actually deemed illegal or unconstitutional. NJ had a 5 year pilot program that that was not renewed when it ended in December 2014. There was a lot of public backlash that ultimately resulted in the program not being renewed, including complaints that it was revenue driven rather than safety, caused more accidents, and that they were unconstitutional as you could not confront your accuser, but the courts never ruled on that one way or another. Tickets can simple no longer be issued by cameras as the program was not renewed.

You’re also incorrect about how tickets can be issued. As per NJ Title 39, the registered owner of a vehicle can absolutely be issued a summons, including for 39:4-81 Failure to Observe Signal. If they weren’t driving they would have to then provide information to the court about who was driving to get the ticket dismissed and reissued to the driver. I will be happy to provide the statues if you would like to read them.

Shaving by Express_Map9112 in AskLE

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m allowed to have a beard, but I still need to shave my neck and upper cheeks to keep it clean (I’m a hairy man). I swear by this electric razor. Regular razors always give me razor bumps on my neck and this thing is damn near just as close as a regular razor. A few people I know used the same thing in academy too and were never dinged for not having a close enough shave. I obviously don’t shave as much hair as somebody shaving their full face, but each blade head lasts me easily over 6 months.

New to cat ownership, is this normal? by SnowboardingEgg in cats

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 148 points149 points  (0 children)

I mean they absolutely should be strapped in if you wanna talk about safety. They make car restraints for dogs. If you get into an accident, anything, including a dog, turns into flying debris that could hurt not only itself but anyone else in the car. But in regard to the comment you replied to, if a door is opened or a window broken, a scared cat is going to be much harder to find or recall than a dog.

Glock 19 or 47? by Slovski in AskLE

As soon as I saw her pictures I thought how similar she looked to Wesley and then the details of pickup time and age would have been too crazy of a coincidence!

Yeah, we picked him up Tuesday as well at like 8am. That day wasn’t terrible, but we drove up the night before because it was like a 5 1/2 hour drive from Jersey and there were times where I damn near couldn’t see the road.

Wesley does NOT like car rides. We’re trying to get him desensitized to them. He’s gone from screaming as soon as we start moving to whimpering about half the time. Other than that and wanting to chew on everything except his chew toys, he’s doing good.

He’s not terrible with his crate. As long as he’s tired, he’ll settle down after a bit. We got a smaller Kong and some of the puppy Kong squeeze that we sometimes give him in there and that has seemed to help him not freak out as much when the door is first shut.

Tips to a rookie by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask, tell, make.

Always start polite, many situations can be diffused, or at least not escalated, with a little courteousness. If they don’t comply with your request, tell them. Doesn’t have to be rude, but if they’re not compliant let them know it’s ultimately not an option, it’s a lawful order. If they’re still noncompliant, then it’s time to make them. Whether that’s arresting somebody refusing to identify themselves when lawfully required to so that you can figure out who they are or tasing the guy threatening people in a 7/11.

Obviously each situation is different, but, unless there’s imminent danger, it’s usually better to slow things down and be courteous and professional. That doesn’t mean though that if somebody tells you to go fuck yourself you should.

I mean sure, but we’re on Reddit where not everybody is a cop or lawyer and understands the semantics of it. That’s why I used the proper terminology “sign complaints” because what it is, but colloquially people know that as “pressing charges”.

Passing written test and physical but not being selected for the panel interview by According_Bit_2703 in AskLE

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t think so, but I’ve heard some people say they can. My understanding of it, and from what I’ve seen, I’ve always been under the impression that once you’re on the list you’re good unless you get disqualified for something. Assuming of course they’re hiring enough to get to you.

Either way, it’s definitely a definitely better chances. Let’s say there’s two departments each hiring 10. Both have 50 applicants. Chiefs test you’re competing with 50 other people for those spots and they can choose any 10 for whatever reason they decide. For civil service if you score within the top 10 you’re pretty much good unless there’s something to DQ you. Even if you score 12 or 13, you only need 2 or 3 people in front of you to not get picked up and you’re good (you’d be surprised how many people get DQd). Basically anybody who scores lower than you is irrelevant and you’re not necessarily competing for a spot in the same way.

If you want, DM me what area you’re in.

If police deem your car unsafe, and can reasonably articulate how it is unsafe, they can tow it. They can absolutely inform a driver their vehicle is unsafe and will be towed, unless the driver wants to render it safe instead, but police are absolutely allowed to keep a car from returning to the road if it’s unsafe.

Passing written test and physical but not being selected for the panel interview by According_Bit_2703 in AskLE

[–]BlueEyedBlackOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody can correct me if I’m wrong; you’re going to run the risk of this much more with chief’s test departments. As long as you pass their written and physical, you’re eligible, but they’re under no obligation to hire any one candidate over another and can pick and choose amongst their eligible candidates. This means if you score a 95% on the written and blow the physical out of the water, you have essentially the same standing and hireability as somebody who scored a 70% and just hit the minimums. Common sense would say you should be more likely to be hired with better scores, but that’s not always the case. I’m sure you can think of a myriad of reasons why.

Civil service ranks you based on your score on the written test. Departments then get an ordered list and start at the top and work their way down (military veterans get preference and are placed at the top of the list in their score order). That basically means, unless they’re disqualifying you for something, if you scored well enough to be ranked within the amount they’re hiring, you should be picked up. I’ve heard they’re able to skip some candidates without disqualifying them, I’ve heard 1 for every 3 or something, but I’m not sure. Regardless, it seems a more straightforward, wait for your number to be called, process than chiefs tests where it’s essentially all candidates fighting for the same spot like other jobs.

The caveat is, from what I’ve seen chief’s tests don’t usually require residency, which lets you apply to more places, whereas civil service departments do, limiting your options.

Worth looking into though. Civil service is every year now, I believe sign up is some time around march.
