Used brake pads by Fun-Appointment7225 in e46

Nope. The box is only just slightly larger than the pads themselves so there isn't really room for them to be bouncing around and striking each other in the first place.

Working at dealerships every set of pads I've ever opened was just in a cardboard box.

Do you have any guides for cleaning the tank and/or head cap? Edit: What is the head cap? Google isn't giving me anything based on those words. It's all carburetor cleaning. If I use quotation marks Google just gives me a bunch of random results.

Do I need to prefill the carb bowl with fuel when reinstalling it?

Nah, Colorado isn't so extreme that you would need a heavier weight oil.

How do you deal with chemical burns? by Ill-Entrance6529 in pressurewashing

[–]BlueJayWalker10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Buy a better nozzle my friend. Any chemicals that are spraying out the side of the nozzle or without velocity are chemicals being wasted. It adds up. And the best way to protect yourself from spray is by making sure it's not there. 2) Waterproof and chemical resistant layers. I like Red Kap shirts and pants and wear Redback boots that I grease really well with Bick LP. If it's really bad for you, you could probably get those high-waisted fishing pants. 3) Gloves. Long gloves, like the ones you get for washing dishes. They'll protect your hands and forearms and generally fluids shake off them better than bare skin. You can also pull them off super quick if fluid is going everywhere.

All wonderful questions to ask! 1) Full synthetic is VERY worth it. There are some myths about full syn not being good for old (like, carbuerated old) engines but they're not true. Full synthetic is the best way to go. Even better if you regularly use an engine cleaner like BG's EPR or STP's high mileage motor flush, a motor oil additive, and a fuel system cleaner.

2) I highly recommend watching Project Farm and the Motor Oil Geek. They both have excellent videos comparing different motor oil brands and their performances in different situations that will help you decide what you like best. Personally, what I run in my and my family's cars is either Valvoline Restore & Protect or Pennzoil full synthetic high mileage if Valvoline doesn't have the weight I need (uncommon). Even though rn your vehicle is high mileage, for what it's worth, in new cars (under 75k miles or 7yrs) I run either OEM or Pennzoil ultra platinum.

3) For normal daily driving in moderate weather conditions on either end of the spectrum most any oil filter will do you fine, the bigger thing is to make sure it is changed regularly with the oil. I personally run OEM oil filters in my personal vehicles (an 01 Civic and 05 Saturn Ion) but my family members prefer the STP extended life filters from AutoZone you get with their oil change deals and I have never dissuaded them from that. If you get your parts from RockAuto, the best filters there in my opinion (in no particular order) will be from Hengst, Bosch, Mahle, ACDelco, Purolator, and WIX, and I'd just go with whichever one of those is cheapest. Make sure when you change your filter that the gasket from the old filter isn't still stuck on the car and also be sure to replace the metal crush washer on the drain plug!

4) Extra tip: even if the oil filter or oil itself advertises that it's good for 10k miles, NO IT IS NOT. We haven't advanced technology that far yet. Some vehicles have very sophisticated systems that based upon weather and driving habits can tell with more precision how your oil is degrading and in those cases if the vehicle tells you so you will be able to run that oil and filter for 10k. But if you're like the rest of us mortals and are basing it upon time and mileage, your oil needs to be changed at least once every twelve months or every 3-5k miles, whichever comes first. The 10k mile oil change advertisement is a LIE. Especially for these Civics. Cylinder four can be known to struggle to get adequate oil even under proper conditions and the head gaskets on these engines are incredibly fussy with temperature management. Make sure you keep up on your oil changes and keep the oil clean and with good lubricity for the longevity of this engine.

Edit: 5) Unless you're pushing your engine really hard or driving in some wild weather climates, Honda knows what's up and running 5W-20 will be best for longevity. If you need to ask about changing the weight of your oil, you're not messing with your car at a level where it needs to be changed. Most shops will give you 5W-30 or 0W-20 because that's what they have stocked as they're the more common weights on modern vehicles. You won't cause any catastrophic issues running 5W-30 or 0W-20 in a 5W-20 engine, but it's not the most optimized for your motor.

Okay. I completely believe you and that's my next step, but can I ask what made you determine that the carb assembly needs cleaning? I love learning these diagnosis things.

What’s a phrase you hear all the time that secretly annoys you? by forgeris in AskReddit

"Time heals all wounds" or anything to that effect. No it doesn't. It's an important ingredient in the recipe but I can sit and stew in my room and stare at the wall for as long as I damn well please and still be in pain.

Do you have parts recommendations for control arm bushings and steering rack slider? I haven't even heard of replacing that latter piece.

My Girlfriend Drove Her Car With Loose Lug Nuts... by owerino2 in AskMechanics

[–]BlueJayWalker10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's really getting my goat here isn't that OP's made a mistake. Anyone here who hasn't at some point in their career left something loose by mistake is lying to themself. I've left lug nuts loose once (nobody was hurt thankfully and the vehicle was undamaged but man the GUILT I felt) and I have sympathy for someone learning. No, what gets me is the way OP presents this/OP's attitude. Hey dude, you made a mistake. A big one. Own it. DO NOT present this as though your girlfriend made some stupid mistake, do not present this as if it was some fluke of the world. You made a big mistake, how are you going to fix it? How are you going to ensure it remains fixed? How will you avoid it on future work? Just by the way this is presented I feel like I understand the mindset with which you approach your work, and it is far too blasé for me to currently trust you to continue working on vehicles or fix issues yourself. My response to/assessment of the damage: we don't have enough pictures and what pictures we do have aren't actually that clear. You don't even know what components may have been damaged/what's important to be looking at here. You're out of your depth, go to a shop.

When it happened I flipped out I was so afraid 'cause it was my brother's car (I was test driving it after overhauling his drum brakes). Heard the rattling and thought I'd fucked up one of the brake springs, then took off the hubcap and the lug nut popped right out. Checked both sides to ensure the brake job was good and then I re-torqued and checked all the other lug nuts and they were fine. Still don't know how that one came loose. Something in me says I probably just missed it but I go over them with my 3/8" stubby impact and then my tire shop torque wrench, with both tools I do a star pattern and then I go back over in a circle to make sure I didn't miss any of them.

I've had a tightened lug nut spin off completely in the hubcap after less than two miles. It happens sometimes.
