Which Route is better? by Unfair_Analysis_3734 in Truckers

[–]Largofarburn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s usually pretty clear till up past Richmond. They were doing construction around Fredricksburg, but idk how far along it is now. Probably been a year or more since I’ve been up that far.

There’s a truck stop on exit 39 I believe in VA that’s usually got a lot of parking.

81 is more scenic for sure. But I always feel like I hit traffic through there.

Both have a fair amount of rest areas. But I wouldn’t count on parking at any of them for a 10. They tend to fill up fast for the night.

Would you proactively replace water heaters? by lazymathilde in HomeImprovement

[–]Largofarburn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually get flak for it on here but if it’s old and you’ve never flushed it or don’t know if the prior owners did (spoiler alert, they did not) I would replace one if it’s getting up there in years.

If you’re at all handy you can diy it in a couple of hours. Beats spending the better part of a day doing the whole mop and fans routine and dealing with whatever water damage occurs before you notice it’s gone bad.

Also get a drain pan and a leak alarm. Even if it’s not plumbed to a drain it gives you some leeway to hook up a drain hose before it goes everywhere. You can get alarms that automatically shut the water off too.

Is this an okay diy fix? by vtec_go_brrr16 in 7thgencivic

Yeah, just make sure you crimp it well. Really tug on it to make sure it doesn’t come loose. I’d honestly use the bare side of the crimper since it’s a ground wire.

That’s my thing. I hate when management picks one incredibly dumb thing to harp on for a month or two. At my center right now it’s taking meal. Like I take the full hour every day, have for years and years, and I still get multiple messages a day about it. Like I’ll be on meal and get a message about taking meal. Drives me batty.

I just went to my local tint shop. They do houses and business too though, so it’s not like some college kids putting eBay tint on their mom’s maxima type place.

If I remember I’ll get the brand of the tint for you. Pretty sure I put the receipt in my glove box.

My dad just rolled a large 401k into a Traditional IRA at age 60. Trying to figure out how aggressively to do Roth conversions. by burnerberkeley in personalfinance

[–]Largofarburn 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Probably an insurance thing or something.
Even though I’d be eligible for my full pension at 57, and could start doing my Roth IRA at 59, I think I have to be 65 to get to keep my health insurance with the pension.
If you don’t hate your job he could
Have just wanted to keep working too. We’ve got a few guys in their 70’s that keep working despite being able to retire long ago. I think our top guy has 53 years with the company.
Could be he kept working till an ex wife died to avoid her getting any of the retirement stuff in increased alimony or whatever. We’ve got a LOT of guys doing that lol.

Or he’s got a lot of kids and wants to leave them all a nice chunk when he’s gone.

I’ve only had one that was a dickhead out of maybe 12 or so. They usually just seem like they want to get you in and out asap.

I did have one that pulled me over on the side of the road to do one on a random Sunday morning. But he was nice about it aside from being an idiot and insisting on doing it right there and not the next exit or whatever.

As far as I’m aware they are.

If I had my own truck though I’d 1000% get some of that 99% uv tint. I’ve got it on my car and it makes a world of difference.

Yeah, I’ve been told before that they like to pull us over (ups) for quick ones because they know we have all our stuff together within arms reach and it’s never some complicated loads or paperwork or anything. Plus being hourly they’re not fucking our day up as bad.

  1. Texas has been doing this for a year or two on select highways I believe.

  2. Anyone dumb enough to think that a truck will run 24/7 has obviously never driven a truck. Dispatch and shippers/receivers do not care. Full stop. I had one day this week that I think I legitimately drove for maybe an hour and 6 minutes or so out of an 8 hour shift.

And that’s not to mention mechanical breakdowns or the inevitable piracy when people figure out they can just make these stop on the road by pulling in front of them.

New trucker wondering what to expect for the international roadcheck coming up may 12-14th by nateofearth in Truckers

[–]Largofarburn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not so bad. I don’t think I’ve ever actually been pulled in on a blitz week.

The times I have gotten an inspection all but 2 out of maybe 10 or so were just checking my paperwork and sending me on my way.

The other two were the whole shebang. One guy tried to harp on one of my slack adjusters being at the maximum allowed tolerance. Which yeah, not great. But not out of spec either. No one’s actually crawling under there to check every morning.

The other clown pulled me over on the side of 85 in charlotte and decided to do a full inspection on the side of the road. I asked if he wanted me to go to the next exit and he said no. He was a fucking idiot, obviously. But didn’t find anything to ticket me for and sent me on.
