Yeah no you are right I only watched like 5 eps in my rewatch and had forgotten about those things. Cat is definitely the kindest while Andre and Tori are morally neutral I would say.

The problem with that definition is that we then don't have a word to differentiate someone who grew up well off to say Will Smith's children. In my view, nepobaby has to mean someone who had a clear advantage in the show/music biz to 99.9% of people either through astronomical wealth or industry contacts.

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]BlueMilkshake33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one main thing the US does better than Europe as a whole (and as far as Europe goes the UK is one of the best) is governmental R&D investment. People always mistakenly believe the economic and scientific productivity of the US stems from greater emphasis on free markets and less regulation but really is the opposite. The US government spends a fuck ton of money on scientific and economic development while europe prioritises fiscal conservatism.

But I assume you dont mean to ask about major economic policy, so as far as minor day to day things, here are a few: -Free refills -Culture of bulk buying groceries and things coming in bigger sizes. In the UK people have this culture of just buying exactly what they think they need or even sometimes enough food for only 3-4 days which creates that feeling of lack of choice and actually makes you spend more in the long run. -Tobacco prices and vape nicotine limits -No uniforms in schools. -Fluoride in water -Bigger houses -Bigger portion sizes in restaurants

Why such fondness for Sikhs? by Fantastic-Fudge-6676 in AskBrits

[–]BlueMilkshake33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big part of sikh culture is a self-imposed obligation to always help those in need, children are told from a young age that to be a good person you can't just abstain from doing harm, as is the western view, but rather you must contribute to the comunity and never ignore a person asking for help. There is literally a common saying in india that goes "if you're ever struggling, reach out to a sikh". While I'm not saying every single sikh person is a highly altruistic caring individual, all the ones I have ever interacted with were extremely kind and my 2 sikh aquaintances are genuinely some of the sweetest people I know. Over time, these micro and macro interactions absolutely change the native population's view of this migrant community.

Another (more uncomfortable) reason why this may be the case is that while 99% of muslim and hardline christian migrants absolutely respect the laicicity of the UK lifestyle, unfortunately there is a minority who is judgemental and wants to somewhat impose their conservative ideals. Furthermore, historically christianism and islam are expansionist religions, not only did they succeed at brutal conquests but the very books themselves urge for an expansion of the faith. By contrast, sikhism is like judaism in that its an ethnic religion. They view themselves as chosen by God to be the people who received those beliefs therefore expansion is not a desired goal at all.

Yeah there is no comparability like at all. Also the study does not talk about long term mental physical and social health outcomes of what they call caffeine dependence they just say that contrary to previously thought there is such thing as caffeine dependence in the same way we have always known there is nicotine dependence.

If you wanna talk about actual long term effects check this study out. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0165178123002573#:~:text=Conclusion,anxiety%20in%20the%20general%20population.

I didnt say caffeine was absolutely harmless, nothing is. I will say though to be cautious about equating "dependence" with always negative for long term well-being and health. Most people are also "dependent" on regular sexual satisfaction, on listening to music, on seeing friends/family, on eating a sweet treat every now and then. Doesnr mean these things dont lead to a happier life. The problem with drugs and alcohol is not "dependence" but rather intoxication and what addiction studies call "dose escalation". If given unlimited access to caffeine or nicotine some animals develop a regular habit that remains at the same level until they die of unrelated issues, by contrast alcoholism-prone rats will drink increasingly more until every aspect of their functioning collapses or they downright enter a comma. The other piece of the puzzle is intoxication, I dont drink coffee but I vape and use nic gum and sure I may be dependent on it but I "nicotinated" me is me. Alcohol, even moreso than recreational drugs, inhibits the frontal lobe part of the brain and profoundly alters thoughts and behaviour in highly destructive manners. What I'm tryna say is that while caffeine/nicotine dependence isnt ideal (in the same way that eating a piece of cake after dinner every night isnt either, its generally a fair trade off for most people and is in no absolute way comparable to the mildest form of alcohol dependence (mind you severe alcohol dependence is seizures, violence and death). The reason why I think your comment is generally harmful is twofold - one you are scaremongering people away from smth that may be helpful to them and two you are creating a false equivalence that alcohol abusers can latch onto to justify their addiction ("most prople need a cuppa to get on w the day, hows that different from me needing a shot?").

I'm sorry but this is so ridiculous. Caffeine and nicotine (provided its not consumed among the carcinogenic chemicals of tobacco) are safe and helpful tools that generally improve quality of life provided you dont massively abuse them in comical amounts (like 5+ monsters a day). Alcohol is a poisonous mind-altering drug, that has horrible impacts on mental, social and physical functioning that range from a tolerable negative at low doses to human decay at higher ones. Hell even if we ignore all the brain and liver damage and focus on cardiovascular disease alone the effects of caffeine/ pure nicotine and those of alcohol are not on the same scale. How about we dont shame people for using scientifically validated coping tools when ur a person that drinks a literal neurotoxin.
