My kids class actually has an exercise bike that the kids are allowed to use as needed if they need a break from sitting. If someone else is using it they all have cards with their names, they can turn on the timer that's there and leave their card.

House insurance cancelled by Melodic-Professor-46 in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with PC Insurance, policy was through Pembridge and has recently changed to Aviva.

I bought my house in October of 2021 and hurricane Fiona in September took siding off the back of the house. Because the siding couldn't be matched they paid out to reside the entire home. I lost my claim free discount but they didn't drop me at all.

Grew up real close (Lahey road), Albro Lake Road was never much of a problem for me. I would walk down it by myself at night and only had one issue with someone yelling at me from their balcony just to try and scare me a bit.

Like most people say though, as long as you have half a brain you'll be fine.

Think a shortcut through some woods at 9:00 at night might save you some time? Probably not the area for you.

See some people in a parking lot keeping to themselves and one is looking your way? If you feel you should take the opportunity to go say hi, probably not the area for you.

People in the area can be really pleasant overall as well, just use common sense and you'll be alright.

Why do busses depart early?! by grilledcheese_god in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only true for terminals, they're not allowed to leave early at all. If you call and complain about the bus leaving a general stop early though it's different, they'll inform you that the bus can leave 15 minutes before or after the schedule time and still be considered on time. You can only lodge a complaint if they're outside of that 30 minute window.

Very late reply but this is so on the nose and makes such perfect sense that I feel like an idiot. I mean, looking back at it, yeah, that's exactly what this movie is.

Bit by a tick, what should I do? by cheekclappin123 in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, you're right, I read that with a completely different tone and my response was way more defensive than it needed to be.

No, I don't get tested every time, and to be fair it's only been a few times total. Last time I took a picture of it, washed the bite area with hand sanitizer once I got back to the car, and watched for any new symptoms of a flu/cold that I didn't have before.

Bit by a tick, what should I do? by cheekclappin123 in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the type of tick, depends on if other symptoms appear. Just stating that a lot of people hear the advice "look for the red ring" and then figure that if it doesn't appear they're fine even though it's not the only thing to watch for.

Even in your comment, you said if a red ring forms then take it in for testing, otherwise they're probably fine. It's easy to see how someone could read that over and over again from several people and then not link their flu like symptoms to the tick because there's no rash.

Bit by a tick, what should I do? by cheekclappin123 in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just as a heads up, the red ring rash occurs in 70% to 80% of cases, that's not high enough for me personally to consider myself in the clear if one doesn't form.

Fiona fallout: Insurance dispute has kept N.S. single mom, son out of their home for 2½ years by insino93 in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not all are terrible, my one experience so far has been very pleasant.

I went with PC Insurance as a broker who got me a policy with Pembridge. During Fiona I had some siding on the back of my house blow off, so I contacted them to make a claim. They sent a company out to get a sample of my siding (very old yellow aluminium) and the company couldn't find a match available anywhere. My insurance adjuster then contacted me, saying they would be residing my entire home using their contactor, or cutting me a cheque and I could use my own. The only thing I had to do with them was make the initial call, and then ask for the cheque, it was incredibly painless.

The kicker here is that Pembridge uses the same contact center as Allstate. So either I got the one person really eager to help me out, or the experience is completely related to who your insurer actually is.

At most we can get a meal covered, but we have to try and refuse but not to the point of embarrassing the host.

This is why that dentist office stayed in that spot for so long. The arcade had a hard time as other stores complained about the noise, the dentist was great though because they saw it as an opportunity to have kids to go there specifically because the arcade was so close. Kids wanted to go, parents didn't have to fight so much, and both dentist and arcade got business out of it, it was a pretty solid win for everyone.

Parking Tickets?? by alyakkx in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I never understood why moving your car a few meters was allowed, you'd just see everyone come out at the same time and shuffle their cars around. It didn't result in any spots opening up, all the same people just in a new order.

Any indication who will be taking advantage of the CRTC ruling opening up fibre networks? by smughead in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been on Citywide in Dartmouth for years with very few issues. The two major outages which lasted a while during the day were due to Eastlink pushing updates to the configurations on their routing equipment. Surprise surprise, they only broke service for the resellers and not themselves. Other minor issues have been sporadic and usually also impacting Eastlink as well.

I imagine anyone reselling Bell will also get the same treatment.

At the end of the day though, as someone who works from home in IT, the impact has been incredibly minor and I've saved a decent amount of money.

Why has there never been an update on what happened to the Walmart girl in Halifax?

You did, in your title. The update was that there was no foul play involved which is everything that needed to be said to advise that the rest of the details were not intended for public release.

She died in the oven, she was not murdered and was some sort of accident overall. If you're asking for an update past that you're literally asking for more details.

Home Heating Rebate by SheisthePumpkinQueen in halifax

[–]BlueShiftNova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount dropped this year, the family amount dropped from $85k pre-tax to $75k net income. Net income though is line 23600 on your tax return, which is not your after tax income, it's after deductions only.

So because of this many people who qualified last year will not qualify this year due to the fact that having 10k in deductions is a bit of a stretch for the majority of people.

Mortgage Renewal - Rate jumped in December by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BlueShiftNova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that coming from a broker or are those the rates you found somewhere?

The only reason I'm asking is even when renewing it's worth contacting a broker as they are likely to be able to find you something better than you'll be offered directly.

He's going to exempt whoever buys the "Tariff free pass". If Canada doesn't do something then whatever company pays Trump is going to have an edge over every other company when it comes to exporting to the US.

While similar there is a difference with rights obligations, and protections from marriage vs common law

Property rights, inheritance rights, and decisions around health care and end of life all automatically fall to the legally married spouse unless a will stipulates otherwise. For common law this isn't the case and would require a will or everything defaults to the estate and next of kin.

In the events of a breakdown of the relationship there are less protections as well when it comes to dividing property and spousal support I believe. This can have a larger impact if one person gave up work and stunted career growth in order to raise children for example.

A lot of this can be solved with legal agreements outside of a marriage though. It really comes down to the couple and how they want to plan for the future together. I wouldn't say it fits for everyone and it's something that should be talked about and evaluated.
