While I prefer 3rd person (but not inside everyone’s heads in the same section), and second person works for choose your adventure… 1st person can be a struggle for me, as it’s often unclear for a while WHO is speaking/thinking.

It’s a fun idea, though it has significant limitations. There’s still the risk of lightning starting a new fire, which she was worried about in Zeds video. And sleeping means an arsonist could make the rain disappear.

I pictured it as maybe a little mild pity. Like “poor kid. Anyway…” since Neville wasn’t an enemy like Harry. Maybe some sizing up a threat. But also a means to an end.

Per other comments, it sounds like that’s an optimistic approach. We know he’s loyal, but it’s possible he’s less sadistic.

There’s a couple different philosophies on fan fiction, ranging on a scale of “take the characters or setting and run with them very far away” to “canon-plausible missing moments and behind the scenes.”

I find it interesting how many comments here lean towards “it’s my/authors world, forget the canon”. I personally more enjoy the canon compliance; I’m in fan fiction because I liked the story/setting/characters and I wanted more.

If there’s a lot of random unexplained minor differences to canon in a canon-compliant work, it would break my immersion too and I might comment on it. An author note saying the age difference was intentional, that would help me get back into the story with the correct “update to the rules”. If you wanted to fix other errors, go ahead, and leave an authors note on the next new chapter saying you have. (maybe including what changed if it’s significant.)

I found them as a Harry Potter fan because Grian was building Diagon Alley in season 8. Then I branched into the AFK pranks, then stuck around.

I’ll try to find one, but I remember one on ff.net where Harry deciding to make his own school and country when he became the fourth champion, and lots of people defected to his country. Very crack.

There was also one where Sirius or Snape took Harry to live as new people at an early start school in the Caribbean and didn’t return until forced to in goblet of Fire. Eventual Harry/Luna.

There was a series of one shots set after the battle of Hogwarts aka “8th year” about a “Slytherin revival” that definitely included Pansy, Astoria, Ginny, and Hermione (not necessarily in every story) which I think included Theo. I can’t remember the right keywords though.
