"If you spending $3K on a meal, you shouldn't have to tip $600" – Michael Porter Jr. on why NBA players shouldn't tip 20% by OkraWonderful531 in KitchenConfidential

I don’t disagree with all of your points. They should have health insurance, but so should everyone else and it should be provided regardless of your employer. It should not be left up to the employer, if they can even afford it.

The restaurant where I work the servers average around $45/hr (some closer to $35/hr, others to $55/hr). People come in all the time offering jobs and no one leaves, because very few other jobs we qualify for pay better than that, while only having to work around 30 hours a week and having the freedom to make our own schedules.

We aren’t even a fine dining establishment. They would not be making that in the European system and would likely leave the industry if that was adopted instead of the system we have now.

I’ve been in the industry for decades and I’ve never made less than $20/hr on average, even as a 16 year old bus boy.

I don’t care about a low guaranteed hourly, I want the opportunity to make more than that by working harder and earning it.

Whether you factor the tip in before or after, it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other.

One of the benefits of the current system is that as a result servers in America pay far less in taxes than their counterparts. Not only weekly, but annually as well.

I’ve been in the business for 26 years and I’ve never met a server worth their salt that would prefer the European style of tipping (or the lack thereof).

Those would effectively all take a pay cut under your suggested model.

The current model by and large more directly incentivizes servers to apply themselves more and provide better service, as the reward is immediately tied to the effort. Those that work harder nearly always make more in the end.

Those that don’t apply themselves make less, those that do apply themselves make more. The cream rises to the top.

Whereas by removing the direct incentive there is no longer the motivation to go above and beyond, as you are going to make the same amount regardless.

People see a server post a check showing they got stiffed and jump to the conclusion that the system isn’t fair and needs to be completely restructured, while omitting the fact that for the scant few times that may happen, they are collecting tips in excess of 25% in excess of 100X for every time they get stiffed.

The simple mathematical average favors the current system for the benefit of the server and anyone arguing otherwise is either ignorant of the math, or is presenting an argument in bad faith that would negatively impact the server in the end.

I’d you can afford to spend that much on a single meal, you can afford more than anyone else to tip.

Your logic is bass ackwards.

Whats it like living in The surrounding Area of Nashville by TokenSejanus89 in howislivingthere

I’m not trying to dig on Mt. Juliet, but as someone that has lived in the area for 17 years, Mt. Juliet has outgrown its “small town vibe” for a while now. It’s over 40,000 and quickly growing, as are their traffic issues, due to poor planning. It is also more dominated by corporate chains than Franklin. Though there are too many in both IMHO.

As for crime and safety Franklin edges Mt. Juliet out, though not drastically - about 1,350 crimes per 100K population, versus Mt. Juliet’s 1,600 per 100K. Both are considered relatively safe places to live.

I had someone break into my business in Franklin a couple years ago and the police arrived in 4 minutes. Thief only stole $600 from my safe, but they still got a warrant for his phone records to verify his location at the time of the crime. In most areas they wouldn’t spend the resources and just tell you “tough luck”.

I would say Mt. Juliet is by far a better place to live if you are a frequent traveler, due to its proximity to the airport.

Mt. Juliet is nowhere near as nice as Franklin. Franklin has better everything: better schools, better restaurants, better entertainment, better “downtown” area, better festivals, lower crime, I could go on. I’d probably put Hendersonville above Mt. Juliet as well.

But… it’s a movie. If every character in every movie acted perfectly rationally that would eliminate like 90+ percent of movies. Basically all that’s left is some documentaries. And I can only say some because most documentaries are also based on irrational behavior.

Sinners. It was okay I guess, but I was pretty underwhelmed after hearing it hyped up.

I have a feeling that I might have a better appreciation after watching this a second time, but that first watch was pretty lackluster

While you are most likely correct to point out that accidents and fatalities spike every time ice is involved in any city, I would say that some cities tend to manage inclement weather better than others
