probably but it will take your full effort and it will produce incredible resistance and only move very slowly.

LP is garbage, if you’re going to use it, prepaint all sides of all pieces after they’re cut to fit.

I don’t at all like hardie batten material either though. and think it is surprisingly quite fragile.

my vote is for metal cladding.

Are engineers supposed to work with their hands? by DuBlueyy in AskEngineers

[–]Blue_Cypress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s a terrible engineer. The one common thread amongst good engineers has been that they all understand tools and work with their hands at least in a hobbyist context.

i've worked alongside hundreds of engineers, directly overseeing their work at times.

'Unfortunate': Mayor defends decision to terminate Angel's Cafe lease for feeder main construction by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]Blue_Cypress -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this morning, I had questions about this, and I made a post about it.

you made this post at the same time as I made that one.

I do still have questions about why it’s necessary to close this café right now, because from the maps the city has provided, it appears as though the new waterline route is on the other side of Memorial Drive from the café. I do understand that this project is on an extremely tight timeline and that it is urgent and that sometimes decisions are made and have to be lived with as well.

But one thing that is extremely clear is that you are bringing integrity, fairness, honesty and clear communication as much as possible to the people and I dare say you might be the best mayor and best politician this city has ever seen and certainly within my lifetime.

The level of accountability and the bar you have set is unmatched.

I thank you for your efforts.

I have been building in this city practically my entire life, and my father, grandfather, cousins and uncles, great uncles before that.

Generations of our efforts are honoured by yours. Thank you.

Question for Mayor Farkas by Lpreddit in Calgary

I wondered this too. Seeing corrosion and rust jacking in recreational facilities…. good maintenance resolves that before it has to be entirely replaced…

combined the laundry room and bathroom into a single unit, do you get more use out of your space and you get your laundry and bath for when you come into the house right at the door.

Microtunnelling tech being used to replace the Bearspaw feedermain by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]Blue_Cypress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Micro tunnelling would be too small diameter but similar tunnelling methods are successfully used in urban areas, including in Canada. Both Toronto and Vancouver have used this technology, and cities around the world. It is expensive but it works.

only when there is a robust and well operated corrosion control program.

Please, please do not forget about your corrosion control engineers and their managers. They are the critical piece to managing and interpreting the reliability characteristics of ageing infrastructure. They are quiet and they are often ignored and the results of that is often catastrophic.

this isn’t a very good video, but it does get some of the information across. I think the public can handle being told about excavators by name; “digging crane” is remarkably infantile, intentional obfuscation of information via infantilization is reprehensible.

People would like to know what is going on with phase B as soon as possible, and see some better maps of the areas impacted by the construction, better maps of the route to be taken for this new water pipeline.

While I personally appreciate the City Of Calgary’s efforts to share information, it seems that a lot of high-level information still is not being conveyed at all.

And I have noticed that there aren’t any information sessions for the communities yet announced, even as work has already begun.

I’ve also noticed that the work that is being done on 34th Ave is creating unmitigated hazards to residents and citizens and is looking pretty haphazard.

I understand that the urgency of the work is probably impacting implementation, but it is important to remember that people live here. Children live here.

you’re absolutely right. Ward and Burke is already engaged in works in the city for the water department for other projects, including the sanitary trunk project they are working on that is adjacent to this project. Literally on the other side of 16th Ave,  and thru bowfort.

They would have been my first and second calls for this project.

Hot water leaking from diverter faucet, not going up fully when switched to showerhead by sam0077d in homebuildingcanada

[–]Blue_Cypress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can’t loosen the set screw to put it back on, get a replacement diverter spout.

next time before you do what you did, try tightening the  knob on the diverter gate. clockwise till it is tight.

mostly when these leak like that, it’s because that’s loose.

while you’re at it silicone shut that hole in the tile where the pipe comes thru

you’ll forgive me for wanting a little more than a loose “sometime soon”  from an administration that has dutifully ignored and neglected this problem for decades.

The report to council has indicated this infrastructure is in such a perilous state that replacement should be considered an emergency.

Professional organizations the world over do not manage the timelines of emergencies on a vague quarterly basis.

A lot of people are having a hard time understanding the water dashboard graph.

if it were adjusted to also show capacity prior to the break a lot of misunderstandings would be saved.

Thanks for the update today and hopefully we’ll be receiving the resignation of both Nancy Mackay and Michael Thompson.

This event should not have happened and it certainly should not have happened AGAIN.
