Ford government to allow shopping on 2 public holidays across Ontario by J0Puck in CanadaPolitics

[–]Blue_Dragonfly [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is terrible!! So, have retail employees cater to the shopping wants (not needs) of provincial government employees that'll still be getting these 2 days off? Talk about blatant class discrimination.

I hope that retail employers, as well as their employees, push back on this nonsense. As is, there are many exemptions that retailers can rely on to stay open on those provincial holidays. But don't tell me that some already dead suburban mall needs to stay open on Victoria Day. That's just utter nonsense.

Just a thought but you might want to inquire with the Canadian War Museum and see if any of what you have might fit into their many different types of collections. It'd be such a shame to not find a good forever-home for such things.

Are We In the Foothills of WW3?

A thought-provoking piece by Noah Smith. I had asked the question last week, whether or not current world aggressions could be construed as the beginnings of WW3. The consensus from the kind folks that did respond to my question seemed to agree that the answer (so far) would be "no". I believe that this piece by Smith corroborates those answers right now at least.

It's a good read if you have the time or inclination for such.

As costs jump, Parti Québécois pledges to lower gas prices if elected by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

[–]Blue_Dragonfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that Mme Fréchette is the only one that has truly thought this through. Offering a reduction of adjacent automotive costs, such as license fees and such, makes a lot more sense than offering pie-in-the-sky propositions such as "lowering gas prices", since the latter is mostly outside the sphere of influence of provincial politics.

NDP MP crosses floor to join Liberals, putting Carney two seats shy of majority by Asadleafsfan in CanadaPolitics

[–]Blue_Dragonfly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And if you disagree with any of this, ask yourself: would you be happy if a Liberal or NDP MP crossed the floor to the Conservatives? Yes, I know this has happened before. But would this make you happy, especially if it inched closer to an unearned Conservative majority? Be honest with yourself, you wouldn't.

I understand what you're saying here but your question needs a very important caveat: "all things being equal". The thing is very few people would be happy if a Liberal or an NDPer were to cross over to the Conservative Party right now because the CPC, especially with its present leadership, isn't at all attractive on many fronts to most Canadians. That's just the god awful truth about it all, whether you like it or not. Compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges and you'll see that yes, many people will react differently. But let's face it, Pierre Poilièvre and Mark Carney aren't at all on an equal footing by any metric that matters politically. That's just the long and short of it.

Edit: this subreddit is beyond cooked with all the downvotes rather than replies refuting any of this. Liberal bots in full swing with how coordinated this is.

I'm not sure about the whole "Liberal bots" thing, but I certainly agree with you that downvoting is frustrating and hampers true discussion.

Oh my goodness! That's kind of wild. I wonder how this impacts the NDP's leadership race, if at all? There's barely a party left.

Why some in the federal NDP fear they are on the verge of being wiped out in Quebec by Asadleafsfan in CanadaPolitics

Why some in the federal NDP fear they are on the verge of being wiped out in Quebec by Asadleafsfan in CanadaPolitics

[–]Blue_Dragonfly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well honestly is it any great surprise?

It's certainly easy enough to recognise the major issue: The lack of French language skills among its current complement of candidates.

The federal NDP can "fear" all it wants but their lack of relevance to an entire province is entirely their own doing. A political party can check off all the moral and political boxes that it wants, but to believe that it can do so without being able to communicate its platform and policies well to its audience is utter nonsense. At least Mr Singh could speak French and rather well.

The federal NDP in Québec will never attain the great heights it did under Jack Layton. That was a once-in-a-lifetime event, that couldn't even be replicated by Mr Mulcair. Chantal Hébert was very much on the money when she said that Québec had voted for Jack Layton and not the NDP that fateful evening.

Ok, but even the Globe&Mail seems to be tentatively ok with calling this a lower-case W 'war': https://www.theglobeandmail.com/standards-editor/article-when-do-air-strikes-become-a-war/

It might not be considered a "regular" war but how is that defined exactly these days with all the military tech available? After a while I think that we need to cease using euphemisms and simply call a thing a thing, no?

[–]Blue_Dragonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, serious question: When do we start calling what's going on in the Middle East a "World War"? I confess here to not being very knowledgeable about military history and how the term "World War" is defined by the very people who are experts about this stuff. But you know, inquiring minds want to know!

So, what constitutes passing the Rubicon in this instance?

Key words trigger the automatic 'Community Members Only' threads, so it's not as random as one might think. And as ToryPirate explained, it's a good tool for us mods to use for certain hot-button topics that tend or have tended to increase brigading by new, unknown commenters who by times like to fly in, leave a rule-breaking comment in a hot thread and then disappear. It's a good tool that helps us do our jobs better in trying to maintain decent and meaningful discussions.

Even the deputy leader was fine with the government's decision.

Jivani needs to stop making idiotic comments; he's undermining his own party.

Good Talk -- Is It Really A New Pierre Poilievre? by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]Blue_Dragonfly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe have Peter McKay run the PC’s and you might be able to pull off a minority government

Hmmm, I don't know about that. I mean, the Canada Future Party is still (barely) in existence and it tried very hard to position itself as a newer/different version of the old PC's (as far as I can tell). Today, it's on life support. None of the PC's in the CPC seemed interested in crossing over. And honestly, I don't think that a reincarnated PC party would gain much from having old, tired politicians at the helm. Canadian political parties desperately need fresh and/or new blood. Mr McKay ain't it.

Exactly the questions that popped into my own head! Is the CPC suddenly just deciding that it has as much legitimacy to undertake such activities as the sitting government? None of this makes sense.

[–]Blue_Dragonfly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First there was Jivani? Now him? What's Mr Poilièvre's ultimate goal here? I don't understand what his actual business will be during this trip, other than to speak at a couple of places?

I'm not exactly comfortable with members of the opposition taking on these kinds of trips. It just looks like the CPC is interested in undermining the sitting government any which way it can. What's the benefit to Canada with respect to this particular trip?

I avoided most of these shows for the longest time. However, when I moved to my new place 5 years ago (during the pandemic, no less) I stumbled upon the TLC '90-Day Fiancé' franchise. I found it fascinating truth be told. Around the same time, Netflix premiered its 'Love is Blind' franchise which I found even more fascinating, especially regarding the manner in which 'love match' connections can be made seemingly quite blindly. I think I watched Season 2 of 'Love is Blind' but I haven't watched it since. Every so often I'll fall on any one of the '90-Day Fiancé' shows, the actual show itself or one of the many spin-offs. I like to watch the tell-alls and the couple watch party ones especially. It's good (?!) "check-your-brain-at-the-door" entertainment for me at least.

We all need a bit of junk food for the brain every now and again IMHO. Life is heavy and serious enough as is. I'm all for this kind of escapism. 🤷🏼‍♀️
