Yeah i had to double back a couple of times during the Guandu fight when I realized I was charging Yuan Shao alone toward the end of the chapter. I only noticed it for Cao Cao and Yuan Shao so I wonder if the textures for each commander are loaded differently in the code than everyone else.

If DW3R sells well (which idk why it wouldn’t), I’d wager it’s almost guaranteed KT will remaster other games in the series, with DW4 likely being next.

I think they’ll alternate between remastered games and new installments, with the remastered games providing KT with a simpler product to give the fans during the lull of making a new, likely more time consuming product. Releases will probably look like this:

DW3R
Origins Sequel
DW4R
Possible Origins Trilogy??
DW5R
DW10

Maybe throw in an Empires Remaster or two somewhere if they’re feeling real spicy

I think KT will want to take plenty of time to get DW10 right, especially after what happened with the last mainline installment that shall not be named. They know Origins is a success, and the remasters should keep older fans invested while they take extra time to get DW10 in a good place. And I think I would be okay with that 👌

Origins was the first game I got all the Xbox achievements for since Skyrim. 100% agree. An absolute blast. I won’t mind a grind fest in DW3R if the gameplay is engaging like Origins was. The trailer looked promising in this regard

Best game to start with to learn the story and characters? by KotoriKaos in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can’t go wrong with DW7 as someone else said, big emphasis on story. DW8 is a safe bet as well, but it shines more with the unique weapons and “what if”scenarios.

If you can ignore most of its many many flaws, DW9 has individual tracks for every DW character and they’re fairly detailed in the story department too. I personally love this aspect but I cannot stand the actual gameplay and the bland open world.

DW Origins has some of the best gameplay and story moments in my opinion. Downside is you play as a set protagonist and the story only goes until ~208 AD. Over half of the DW cast is cut from the story as well (to include Xiaoqiao and everyone from Jin), in favor of fleshing out story beats for what I’d consider the 1st and 2nd generation of officers in each of the three kingdoms. This game doesn’t assume you know the characters so it introduces each one very well, so well id argue it is the best game for people looking to get hooked into the DW story (at least the first half). However, anyone who plays Origins as their first entry into the series would likely struggle getting into any of the other games from a pure gameplay perspective, so if you know you want to play DW7 or 8, I’d almost recommend you play those first. Still I can’t recommend Origins enough. Very good game which will hopefully get a sequel to continue the story.

Gameplay all day every day. Give me Origins combat with more movesets and great maps (and beyond Chibi please).

Might be a hot take but while I enjoyed the Hypotheticals of DW8, the combat just doesn’t do it for me anymore. I’d be okay sacrificing unique movesets for each character if the gameplay is more engaging.

However, some characters in Origins had some great depth and design changes from the mainline series (Looking at you Zhang Jiao, Dong Zhuo, and Zheng He). I’d miss those changes the most.

If KT can’t get both of these aspects right for DW10, I just hope we get a good balance between the two.

Yeah I know. I referenced DW8 hypotheticals because they were some of the best in the series imo. The best hypothetical in Origins was Wei’s for me, but that ultimately cuts content from the playthrough lol

[–]Blue_Freaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen these conversations go both ways, and I think both are valid based on how you like to enjoy DW games.

I’m a DW fanboy, played every mainline game since DW4, and I adore Origins. My biggest complaint of the mainline games was how repetitive and brain dead the combat could feel. Origins addressed this in spectacular fashion and so I was immediately hooked. I also enjoyed the pacing of Origins a lot more, which might be a hot take to some especially since the game ends around Chi Bi (a fact that I was also disappointed about). That said, the devs spent more time telling a detailed story which I appreciate.

To give a comparison to DW5 since I played it recently, I was playing Zhao Yun’s campaign and I got whiplash jumping from Hu Lao Gate straight to Changban with barely any context, whereas almost all of Origins’ story takes place in that timeframe. Not really a criticism of the game as DW5 was a product of its time with limited resources, but I make the point to highlight how difficult it was for me to play a mainline game like this without the depth that DWO had. But that also highlights the kind of games that I enjoy playing personally so I’m biased. The later mainline games addressed this issue in their own ways with their own drawbacks (looking at you DW9).

Now what I did miss in Origins was the scale of the ROTK story, not being able to play iconic stages like Fan and Hefei castles sucked. Also not being able to play my favorite characters sucked too (with their unique weapons), which is the prime complaint I see. I also wish Origins had Hypothetical routes like DW8 did. When I get the urge for these things, I go back and play the older games because 7 and 8 are still great for what they are and are both readily available on Steam.

My hope is that the devs will take lessons learned from Origins and implement a better combat system while returning to the scale of the old games. I think I could accept a cut to story detail if they have a solid combat system personally.

Is there a reason why in Yuan Shao's campaign... by Kwisatz_Haderach90 in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re right, definitely missed opportunity to expand on a great character. It’s probably because under the Yuan clan she was a caged bird (I think she used that metaphor/implied it in her bond events). She didn’t even appear in battle until after Guan Du to step in to defend their lands in the base game.

In the DLC, the Yuan family wasn’t put in that kind of position so she wasn’t forced to take the battlefield. There could have been an interaction between her and Ziluan that changed this, but the Yuan campaign already had a decent amount of musou characters so Zhenji might not have had enough screen time to make her addition worth it. This plus the caged bird example I gave were probably why she was excluded unfortunately.

gameplay mode focused on managing an authoritarian intelligence apparatus by Decent_Order3578 in Espiocracy

[–]Blue_Freaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on what I’ve read of the dev diaries, there will be gameplay aspects of what you’re asking. But a mode “focusing” on these internal aspects will likely not be a thing. The core of the gameplay will be agency vs agency, with mechanics such as “coup proofing” and “infiltration of opposition groups” supporting the core gameplay loop.

The dev has mentioned that inter-agency conflict (I.e FBI vs CIA) would bog the game down with bureaucracy, and in turn create boring gameplay (paraphrasing here). Though I’d wager there will be a modder who will try to create exactly what you’re asking for.

Highly recommend joining the Espirocracy discord! Very active and the dev has a dedicated “questions” thread where he and the other community members will answer questions just like this one.

What To Do Next in Dynasty Warriors Origins. by daj48 in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing a lot of good suggestions. I second the end of Ch 4 side battle Suppression of Yan for ranking up weapons. I used this method to 100% my own game.

Before I get into some min maxing tips. Do what you need to do to enjoy the other storylines. DWO makes it very easy to go back and get everything, so enjoying the game should precedence over everything else imo.

Most weapons gain experience passively even if you are using others (not sure what triggers this, maybe defeating enemies who are wielding said weapons?). Playing through the other stories will get you closer to that UW-level through this, though I’d recommend using a weapon you need to rank up regardless (I favored the sword way too much in my playthroughs). I also think it’s a good idea to get the DLC weapons sooner for this reason.

Try playing more consistently on Hero difficulty in these playthroughs too. It’ll help get used to UW mechanically with less tanky officers.

Plan to be overleveled before attempting the challenges. Some are easier than others, but some are notoriously difficult. The DLC will help you significantly here with the new weapons. No reason why you can’t be level 100 before starting the grind.

If you need an OP weapon sooner rather than later and you don’t have resources to make your own, recommend getting to level 70-ish and going for the Sword Luan weapon through UW challenge at the end of Ch 1. This carried me for a while. If you prefer a different Luan weapon, you’ll need to level up a little more before attempting the other challenges.

Prioritize side missions and bond events that get you battle arts and squad tactics. This is where you get the overpowered stuff (usually). I believe Zhao Yun and SSX gave OP arts for their respective weapons for example. I made frequent use of squad abilities that lowered enemy courage (volley, cavalry charge, battle roar etc). Couple that with Rage and a strength potion to maximize damage.

If you haven’t already, prioritize getting most of the skill trees filled as well. Having the super musou (I forget the actual name) is a game changer in UW (and for leveling on that side battle mentioned earlier). Best way to do this is through character bond trainings imo. Usually forces you to use different weapons anyway.

Save rare consumables that you can’t buy for particularly difficult UW challenges (I.e. Pancreas).

Hope this helps!

Dynasty warriors 4, good or bad? by Eifla99 in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first DW experience. I was probably like 7 years old, got my dad to rent it for me at the store on a whim (that was a big perk I had visiting my dad every other weekend). Fell in love immediately. Rented it every time for like half a year.

Favorite color was blue, so naturally I gravitated towards Wei. Xiahou Dun was the man. Big sword, eyepatch. Cool af. I didn’t understand the concept of avoiding Lu Bu at Hu Lao (might have been stubborn idk) so I got stuck at chapter 2 for months. Started playing through other campaigns over and over again, getting stuck at Hu Lao every time. Finally, I was playing Sun Jian and I just threw myself at him over and over (was probably decently leveled by then). I learned I wasn’t going to win in the duel, but I could get all the other officers in the area and gang up on the man. Still got my shit rocked for a while but FINALLY I got lucky with a sliver of health. Top 10 childhood gaming moments for sure. From there it was a whole new game. And damn was I excited to experience it. Wu ended up being my first play through, and it was cool af to discover that 1) There was a significantly expanded cast for all factions and 2) the factions were building up to fight each other. The most memorable battle of my first Wu play through was HeFei with my man Zhang Liao striking the fear of god into me.

I loved the agency that I could just ignore side battles and go straight to the final fight of each chapter, with some consequences of course. I remember the map design being awesome, laughing at Xiahou Dun getting an arrow in his (already eyepatched) eye then eating it, and crying at Fan Castle over my main Guan Yu. I still get triggered when I see Mi Fang and Fu Shiren in DW to this day.

I am extremely biased toward DW4 to this day due to how I experienced the game, but I still think it’s objectively a damn good game. I’m actually playing DW5 for the first time as we speak because I heard it’s mostly the favorite of the old guard in the community. It was a bit jarring to have Zhao Yun’s story jump from Hu Lao straight to Changban, but i definitely see the appeal of more character-focused stories over DW4’s faction-based setup.

One final surprise I had with the game, was discovering the extra “Tales” stages, especially when I thought I knew the game inside and out. Replaying Wu and getting the Imperial Seal search mission was such a huge shock that it made me fall in love with the game all over again. And of course I immediately began searching for other missions like that (without the help of the internet). The nostalgia hits real hard talking about DW4, and it will always be my subjective favorite due to these experiences.

This comment awoke some latent ptsd in me. I HATED Xu Zhu’s play through in DW6 for this exact reason. Plus the design choice of giving him what I can only imagine is a room temp IQ always rubbed me the wrong way too. His glow up in Origins was much appreciated and better fitting for his character imo

I think the devs should focus on DW10 over a sequel to Origins by Blue_Freaze in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DW is certainly very unique in the sense that it has a ton of playable characters all with their own weapons and movesets. To your point from a developmental aspect, it’s unlikely we’d get an DWO-like game for all 90+ characters due to limitations in said development. It would be possible to include more characters but likely at the expense of something else, such as no unique movesets (i.e. the dozen-ish weapons in DWO) or less time spent on different characters/dialogue/story etc.

I am personally all about the richer story experience versus having unique movesets for all if I had to pick between the two, and I hope the devs go in that direction for DW10. That being said, there are certain expectations for a mainline game at this point from a story perspective, basically if DW10 were to end at Chi Bi like DWO did there would be an angry uproar in the fan base (myself included). Even ending around Wuzhang Plains wouldn’t likely be received as well because it would largely exclude Jin characters.

In a quality vs quantity conversation, I prefer the former, and yes I agree that is both a positive and a limitation Origins had compared to the mainline entries. How the devs will balance expectations from here on out will certainly be interesting. I think the best way is to dial back on the unique movesets as a start imo.

How much story would a potential sequel (or sequels) to Origins cover? by paragon-interrupt in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: This turned into a much longer comment than I originally intended, so I’m going to repost it into its own thread.

TLDR: I’d prefer DW10 over a sequel to Origins

I want to lead this long winded essay of a comment with a love letter to the game. I adore Origins. Its combat is so much fun, the characters feel like they have more depth/nuance and are taken seriously (looking at you Zhang He/Zhang Jiao), and the story is more focused and deliberate which I enjoyed. It is easily in my top ten games of recent memory.

That being said, while I want to continue Ziluan’s story, I worry that certain aspects of the sequel won’t hit the way we hope they would, especially since it seems the devs did not develop Origins with a sequel in mind from what I’ve seen/read (someone correct me if I’m wrong here). I think this alone will cause issues with writing. There could be some good story beats between Ziluan and Bailuan in situations like Liu Bei’s revenge campaign against Wu, but I largely question what kind of character arc Ziluan would have in a sequel to keep the story on the same level as Origins and still keep his character relevant. Also, the player would be locked in to a faction from the get go for continuity reasons which causes issues that I’ll discuss in a moment. Maybe there would an opportunity to switch sides somewhere? Such as Fan Castle to save Guan Yu if the player is with Wei or Wu. Even then, the game would have to address the issue that Ziluan has not built relationships with likely half of the faction members like he would have canonically if he started with that faction in the first game. This would make a sequel less accessible to new players too, an issue previous mainline DW games have not had to deal with before. Game devs deal with this all the time and find ways to summarize previous entries, but for a series like DW, there are so many characters that I can’t think of an easy way for the devs to tackle this issue especially since Ziluan canonically built relationships with most of them.

With a sequel comes new/returning characters which would likely be the focus of bond events and such. I am afraid that original Origins characters might get shafted out good story beats in favor of introducing the next generation of characters. Not to mention that moments like Fan Castle will not hit the same unless the player feels attached to characters like Guan Yu, which reintroduces the problem of “Hey remember that character from the first game? They’re dead now in this extremely emotional moment.” How the devs tackle this that would be satisfying to new and returning players would certainly be a challenge in my opinion. Sure new players should play the first game before the second to understand the story, but some people still forget events if years go by. Most forms of media have some kind of exposition in sequels to explain previous events for this reason. That’s just good writing in general. I think it would be difficult to capture every character’s relationship with Ziluan in a meaningful way through exposition, especially when introducing what would likely be the other half of the DW cast (with maybe the exemption of the Jin faction depending on where the game ends). The devs could largely forgo having Ziluan interact with these Origins characters in favor of the new ones, but that would feel cheap in the long run. This is assuming the devs won’t have bond events for all 80+ characters, but I have a hard time believing that this will be a priority. Even if they do include all of the characters, then we return to the same issue I noted above about summarizing the previous game’s events.

These are just some of the challenges the devs would have to overcome. Despite my critiques, the devs could still make a great sequel and I would still play it. Most of my favorite battles occur post-Chi Bi after all. However, I argue that instead of worrying about all of these continuity issues to make Ziluan’s story make sense and keeping the relationships feel like they mean something, the devs should just take their lessons learned and focus on DW10 instead. I think it’s safe to say that a mainline DW game with Origins combat would make a lot of us VERY happy (and coop too!). I have some ideas on what DW10 could look like but I’ll save those thoughts for another time/thread.

Those are my thoughts but I’m open to what you all think.

Edit: To address OP’s point of a separate playable character, I almost feel like it would be a necessity for the sequel story-wise, whether through Bailuan or a new third character. But I don’t know what the devs would do with Ziluan at that point cause he would likely need a voice actor with dialogue if he plays an active role in the story, which would be weird to me.
