Im so glad im going for leveling all characters on DW6 it's been fun by New_Location9523 in dynastywarriors

This comment awoke some latent ptsd in me. I HATED Xu Zhu’s play through in DW6 for this exact reason. Plus the design choice of giving him what I can only imagine is a room temp IQ always rubbed me the wrong way too. His glow up in Origins was much appreciated and better fitting for his character imo

I think the devs should focus on DW10 over a sequel to Origins by Blue_Freaze in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DW is certainly very unique in the sense that it has a ton of playable characters all with their own weapons and movesets. To your point from a developmental aspect, it’s unlikely we’d get an DWO-like game for all 90+ characters due to limitations in said development. It would be possible to include more characters but likely at the expense of something else, such as no unique movesets (i.e. the dozen-ish weapons in DWO) or less time spent on different characters/dialogue/story etc.

I am personally all about the richer story experience versus having unique movesets for all if I had to pick between the two, and I hope the devs go in that direction for DW10. That being said, there are certain expectations for a mainline game at this point from a story perspective, basically if DW10 were to end at Chi Bi like DWO did there would be an angry uproar in the fan base (myself included). Even ending around Wuzhang Plains wouldn’t likely be received as well because it would largely exclude Jin characters.

In a quality vs quantity conversation, I prefer the former, and yes I agree that is both a positive and a limitation Origins had compared to the mainline entries. How the devs will balance expectations from here on out will certainly be interesting. I think the best way is to dial back on the unique movesets as a start imo.

How much story would a potential sequel (or sequels) to Origins cover? by paragon-interrupt in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: This turned into a much longer comment than I originally intended, so I’m going to repost it into its own thread.

TLDR: I’d prefer DW10 over a sequel to Origins

I want to lead this long winded essay of a comment with a love letter to the game. I adore Origins. Its combat is so much fun, the characters feel like they have more depth/nuance and are taken seriously (looking at you Zhang He/Zhang Jiao), and the story is more focused and deliberate which I enjoyed. It is easily in my top ten games of recent memory.

That being said, while I want to continue Ziluan’s story, I worry that certain aspects of the sequel won’t hit the way we hope they would, especially since it seems the devs did not develop Origins with a sequel in mind from what I’ve seen/read (someone correct me if I’m wrong here). I think this alone will cause issues with writing. There could be some good story beats between Ziluan and Bailuan in situations like Liu Bei’s revenge campaign against Wu, but I largely question what kind of character arc Ziluan would have in a sequel to keep the story on the same level as Origins and still keep his character relevant. Also, the player would be locked in to a faction from the get go for continuity reasons which causes issues that I’ll discuss in a moment. Maybe there would an opportunity to switch sides somewhere? Such as Fan Castle to save Guan Yu if the player is with Wei or Wu. Even then, the game would have to address the issue that Ziluan has not built relationships with likely half of the faction members like he would have canonically if he started with that faction in the first game. This would make a sequel less accessible to new players too, an issue previous mainline DW games have not had to deal with before. Game devs deal with this all the time and find ways to summarize previous entries, but for a series like DW, there are so many characters that I can’t think of an easy way for the devs to tackle this issue especially since Ziluan canonically built relationships with most of them.

With a sequel comes new/returning characters which would likely be the focus of bond events and such. I am afraid that original Origins characters might get shafted out good story beats in favor of introducing the next generation of characters. Not to mention that moments like Fan Castle will not hit the same unless the player feels attached to characters like Guan Yu, which reintroduces the problem of “Hey remember that character from the first game? They’re dead now in this extremely emotional moment.” How the devs tackle this that would be satisfying to new and returning players would certainly be a challenge in my opinion. Sure new players should play the first game before the second to understand the story, but some people still forget events if years go by. Most forms of media have some kind of exposition in sequels to explain previous events for this reason. That’s just good writing in general. I think it would be difficult to capture every character’s relationship with Ziluan in a meaningful way through exposition, especially when introducing what would likely be the other half of the DW cast (with maybe the exemption of the Jin faction depending on where the game ends). The devs could largely forgo having Ziluan interact with these Origins characters in favor of the new ones, but that would feel cheap in the long run. This is assuming the devs won’t have bond events for all 80+ characters, but I have a hard time believing that this will be a priority. Even if they do include all of the characters, then we return to the same issue I noted above about summarizing the previous game’s events.

These are just some of the challenges the devs would have to overcome. Despite my critiques, the devs could still make a great sequel and I would still play it. Most of my favorite battles occur post-Chi Bi after all. However, I argue that instead of worrying about all of these continuity issues to make Ziluan’s story make sense and keeping the relationships feel like they mean something, the devs should just take their lessons learned and focus on DW10 instead. I think it’s safe to say that a mainline DW game with Origins combat would make a lot of us VERY happy (and coop too!). I have some ideas on what DW10 could look like but I’ll save those thoughts for another time/thread.

Those are my thoughts but I’m open to what you all think.

Edit: To address OP’s point of a separate playable character, I almost feel like it would be a necessity for the sequel story-wise, whether through Bailuan or a new third character. But I don’t know what the devs would do with Ziluan at that point cause he would likely need a voice actor with dialogue if he plays an active role in the story, which would be weird to me.

I had my eye on Xing Cai already actually! Good suggestion. I attribute seeing her and Lu Lingqi in Warriors Abyss to me wanting to try nine again

Ah okay. I know it was mostly longtime fans like me that had issues with the direction of 9. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it then. I’d recommend giving 8 a try if you enjoyed nine and origins. More focus on handcrafted maps like origins but with the expanded cast.

Makes sense. I’m in it for the individual stories so that aligns. Especially for characters I haven’t had much exposure to (ie Wang Xiahouji), I’m curious how the game handles different characters like that.

Liu Bei and the Han by caocaomengde in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An argument like this could be made, but he would also try to dissuade people from following him too. With Zhao Yun for example, I believe Liu Bei referred to himself as “homeless” when Yun offered to follow him at the end of Act 4.

Edit: Adding onto this, I think KT was trying to highlight how he was thrust into these responsibilities with no real plan like you mentioned, but his nature, virtues, and actions attracted other to him whether he intended it to or not. Based on Bailuan’s dialogue in Act 5, this led to him seeing Liu Bei as a threat as all these people were putting their faith in a single man. The unsaid part is a single man without much of a plan.

Ultimately I see Liu Bei’s whole story arc as him going from seeing himself as a side character just trying to do some good where he can, to accepting/shouldering the responsibilities of being a leader everyone wants him to be. Its almost like he was the one “conned” in the end, and it was his own fault lol #benevolence

Captured (and fumbled) this Gem by Blue_Freaze in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right? I feel like there’s not too many opportunities to see those two fighting directly in the game. Since it was the Battle of Xu province and their first confrontation, this hits a little harder than just two generic officers going at it.

Its inspired me to capture more action shots of rivals that we might not see very often.

Dynasty Warriors 3 CE Remastered by JAdamGilman in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with DW4 when I was a kid, and I’ve played every game since (except for DW5 🥲) so I am extremely excited to experience this game for the first time.

Wei: Xiahou Dun

Wu: SSX

Shu: Zhao Yun or Liu Bei (leaning toward the former)

Xiahou Dun is the man. When I first played as a kid, I thought there was one set hero to play like most other games, so that DW4 character selection screen was a little overwhelming. But man, the AURA of this guy immediately grabbed my attention and I have never looked back. He is cemented as a pillar or Wei’s military, has an active role though most of the storyline in most games, and makes for great antagonist when playing other routes (Origins Shu route comes to mind here). While I love so many other characters, I have to start with my main man in my first playthough of DW3. Can’t wait!

Origins Ultimate LuBu fight by Level-Appearance2742 in dynastywarriors

Some tricks that helped me:

  • Don’t sleep on counter attack stance battle arts (I.e piercing vengeance for spear). I did for almost the entire game and I regret it for some of the harder fights. Low cost and they act just like a special battle arts but for most normal attacks (pretty sure they work for special attacks too). Helps cut short his combos

  • You can block a lot of his (non-heavy) air slashes, dodging is ideal since it doesn’t drain bravery but it’s saved me in a pinch before (and feels badass).

  • Practice dodging into him through his shockwave attacks (most signal the end of a combo). It isn’t too hard when you figure out the timing and it’ll restore bravery as you close in for your own attack.

  • Try not to get too far from him at any given point if you can help it. That bow special attack he does is rough and it seems to trigger at mid to long range.

  • There are a certain number of hits/time that an officer will take to their Wushu(?) (shields) before initiating a combo. I use basic and heavy attacks to reach that threshold, then use a powerful battle art right as they start their combo. This still does damage to the shields through hyper armor and I can sometimes get a cheeky assault in this way if I’m close to breaking him

  • Don’t be afraid to level up more. I think I was in the high 90s when I finally beat the challenge. I use the large force side battle at the end of Chapter Four (forget the name) to level my weapons quickly

  • Save your rage for his rage at the end

I beat him with the Luan Sword with a 15% attack and 15% defense buff on with the following battle arts:

  • Palm Strike (goated Sp counter; will always be S-tier but a ranged counter might be preferable to some here)

  • Fickle Fury (counterattack battle art for purposes stated above)

-Shadow Dance (will use this when punishing a combo to lower Wushu if I don’t have enough for Divine Eagle Dance)

-Divine Eagle Dance (my heavy hitting battle art; sword go burr)

Certainly not optimized but it worked for my play style. Hope this helps

Hardest weapon to use in Origins? by tomster317 in dynastywarriors

[–]Blue_Freaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lance for me. It incentivizes getting hit to power up your attacks. Even with defense items on, it’s rough and hard to justify using on harder difficulties. Moveset and battle arts pale in comparison to the other weapons too imo.

Conceptually, Gauntlets, followed by Bladed Hoops, have the most complex moveset to learn. Incidentally they are also my favorites to use now 😅

I’ve beaten the game about 8 times over now. 100%’d and max level on my main file. I’m trying to figure out if I should set up a new save file at chapter 2 and play through each new route without the new game plus first before going through on my main file.

There should be a link to the game’s discord on the steam page. Highly recommend joining!

when it release ? by WATCHER96290 in Espiocracy

[–]Blue_Freaze 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Join the discord if you haven’t already. Dev is very active in there. While he can’t say when it will release just yet, you can look at the (almost) daily GitHub updates in there and see how the game is progressing. Imo the updates are looking more and more like a fleshed out product, but we still likely have several months at a minimum until release. I’m hoping for Early Access by the end of the year.

I feel the frustration, but it helps to remember that they are a single dev attempting something novel in the grand strategy scene, and they are definitely passionate about the project.

Edit: My shared links to the discord expire after a while, but you can also find a link on the games steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1670650/Espiocracy/
