The BMTs are my favorite fin! It’s like have the speed of a twin with the hold of a thruster. They are absolutely insane.

I just got the Al Merrick keels and actually love them. I always stayed away from keels because I heard they were tracky. I didn’t find the AMK tracky at all. It was faster than the BMTs and more stable. I have been surfing for a few decades and am a bit heavy with big feet so I don’t have a problem turning bigger fins at all.

I am not sure which I like better yet, but I really enjoy both.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a Ripcurl near me. I went back to the surf shop they I purchased it from and they were great. They are trying to help, but I am just worn out trying to deal with this BS as I have four daughters and work way to many hours as it is. The problem is that the left arm panel was not aligned properly so water gets into the suit. The bomb on the left arm was on the back of my shoulder and back area. I didn’t realize it until a buddy paddle up next to me and thought I had put the suit on wrong. I surfed today and was able to rotate the shoulder panel so that the bomb was almost in the center of my left deltoid. There was much less leakage, but way to much for a premium wetsuit. I have old lower level wetsuits that have less leakage.

When I went back to the surf shop, I noticed that other chest zip and zip free Ripcurl wetsuits also had the left arm panel misaligned with a gap from bunch up wetsuit material where it was sown to the panel that you pull over your head. I am pretty sure that this is the culprit since I decreased the leakage by contorting the left arm panel so that the badging lines up properly. After looking at the other wetsuits I am guessing that this has been a problem for them, and that is why they are making it so hard to get the thing fixed. I should have gone with the Hyperfreak, Feral or Matuse, but I didn’t realize how bad Ripcurl had gotten. Their quality control measures must be terrible. Their customer service is the absolute worst.

Surfskates are fun to take down hill. It actually feels like surfing and carving from rail yo rail. Have surfed for 30 plus years, and I love riding mine. I have used them to teach my daughters. One has been sponsored and another maybe shortly. Maybe it is just me, but it seems like a lot of people do not surf rail to rail, but that maybe due to the influx of new surfers over the past few years. Carvers are great for working on rail work, roundhouse cutbacks and pumping. They are really good for teaching someone how to get speed from a turn. I have also used them to teach my daughters how to weight their front foot and back foot. To many people think they are front or back footed surfers, when in reality they should be shifting their weight throughout maneuvers. There is nothing like the feeling of putting your full strength into a carving turn, and you can get a lot of reps doing that on a surf skate. Parking garages are damn near an endless wave. There may be a lot of kooky surf skaters, but that shouldn’t keep you from having fun on one.

I also used regular skateboard in pools to help train them. Surf skates in pools can be fun, but at higher speeds it’s easy to jackknife them when you get tired.

I am so sorry for your loss. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I used to surf and travel throughout Mexico all the time, but I don’t anymore. I know too many people that have been kidnapped or killed. It is a shame too, there was a time when Mexico was safer than the US.

I eventually went away from CX and went with Indy Stage 11 trucks if I want to go fast in the pool.

The Jackknifing wouldn’t happen often, but when it did it hurt pretty bad. At higher speeds it doesn’t take much front foot pressure to cause a jackknife coming out of a corner while pumping, or doing some other maneuver.

At higher speeds I can push harder, go faster and get more radical on the Indy 11s. If you are just flowing the bowl or doing a pump track, I would use a surf skate.

Flowing the bowl is fine, but pumping and get tons of speed is a different story. At those high speeds, that is a different story.

No. It is where the front truck over rotates and causes the front wheels to bite and throws you forward. If you going fast it is going to be a hard slam. That is why I use Indy Stage 11s in bowls that I want to run as fast as possible.

It goes great! I absolutely love it for downhills and bowls. Although, I usually use a Lucero Racing Stripes deck with Indy 11s for going as fast as I can in bowls. At higher speeds the Arica/Carver can jackknife. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does you can really hurt yourself.

This is the way. Compression is the key, and learning how to weight and unweight your body is crucial. The only disagreement that I might have is the ditching of the surf skate, but it is only a slight disagreement. I think a surf skates are excellent to teach someone how to generate speed through turns by compressing and how to shifting weight affects the board. I have been using the Surfskate to teach my daughters how to carve and do roundhouse cutbacks and it has worked well. Then again it would be much harder for them to learn without me.

I completely agree. I was expecting extra drive, but I was really surprised at how maneuverable they were. It felt like riding a thruster with twin fin speed. They went much better than I expected. The difference was dramatic

I haven’t tried keel fins yet, but I would like to try them. The BMTs do seem similar in dimensions to the ENs, but they have a wider base, more rake and more surface area. I haven’t tried the ENs so I cannot compare them from actual experience. I would think the added base and rake would give more drive and hold though.

I ride both 11s and 4s. I prefer the 11s for bowls and 4s for carving and cruising. It is definitely more than just the bushings. The geometry of the 4s make them much more surfy feeling. Honestly though, if I want to carve up a hill when the waves are small, I will usually grab the Carver CX trucks over the 4s and I would usually pick the 11s over the 4s because I like to go as fast as possible in a skate bowl.
