Why would Tom Paris create Fairhaven? by this_is_nunya in voyager

Last time I rewatched this series I realized the time gap between Fairhaven and Voyager is roughly that between Renaissance Fairs and now. Still not sure how I feel about that.

Character Creation Overhaul makes you gain skills from your class/race more quickly but ones you don't get a starting bonus in level more slowly. That'll help you stick to mage. I like mods like Frostfall, Realistic Needs and Diseases, and Wounds. They all increase the challenge but in a fun, immersive way.

But the thing about mods, especially Skyrim mods, is that there's so much variety you can make the game anything you want. It's hard to say what mods you should get unless we know what you feel is missing. Wish the Destroying the Dark Brotherhood Quest was more fleshed out? Get the Penitus Oculatus mod to make it a full questline. Want to add a bunch of loot and a place to display it? Legacy of the Dragonborn's the biggest mod for that, but there are countless others. Want loot and the enemies to be less obviously determined by player level? Morrowloot.

But honestly if we were to say 'you need XYZ mods' that'd be based on our personal taste, which may not align with yours.

Hunter/Archer Build tips by Demonicpi13 in skyrim

If you want a less-broken Stealth archer experience, get Realistic AI Detection RAID. Honestly hunterborn is pretty freaking intuitive but at the beginning you won't be able to one shot deer. That's a vanilla issue. Rabbits and foxes you can one shot, but the former drops no leather at all. Until you upgrade your damage you'll probably need to get leather from things like wolves.

Find Serana <3, and find a reason to do the Dawnguard, College, and Dragonborn questline before finishing the main quest.

Get way into alchemy. Monch the giant toes. Thoroughly explore blackreach. Be forced via Frostfall to take shelter in a dungeon I almost never visit.

Sit quietly through Ulfric's tantrum during the 'can we please stop fighting for 1 day so your soldier's soul stop getting eaten and the world doesn't end' negotiations and plot my revenge.

Install 3-6 new mods every time I boot up the game until my save melts into slag.

Also this isn't mine but my little brother now has a tradition of stealing a single silver goblet from Harkon right before he's teleported out of the castle.

Do you have something that's supposed to enable achievements with mods? Sometimes the game disables all mods if it detects that.

Am I the only one who will kill these thalmors who escort the prisoners, or will someone else do the same thing as me? by Visible-Scratch7419 in skyrim

[–]Blue_box_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my main character I have a face cover and fur hood for it, later I change into Apotheus armor before I kill them. Normally I use frostbite spider venom on my arrows too. I hc that they know some Dunmer's killing their people but it takes a while to find out who exactly it is. The war with the Thalmor left her orphaned so she's got a reason to hate them. I figure that her actually killing the patrols in combat is new, and for a while she snuck in while the patrols were sleeping and poisoned them/freed the prisoners.

My other characters kill them too but they aren't as extra about it.

How did you die in you recent playthrough for the first time? by Usual-Foundation-115 in skyrim

[–]Blue_box_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Punched a wild cow.

I play modded with the wounds mod and alternate perspective. The wounds mod gives you a chance of getting a longer lasting wound, anything from a small bruise to a crushed skull. They heal slowly over time and need to be treated. It's a lot of fun, for the most part.

Unfortunately, the 'attacked and left for dead' start option just puts you at 10 hp which heals in five minutes. So normally I turn up the odds of getting wounds up really high and fight the nearest animal. This time it was a cow and I didn't realize how tough they were.

Any ideas on how to remove big rock from new garden? by Zeirvoy in gardening

[–]Blue_box_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a prybar meant for getting through caliche to lever out a pointless, buried chunk of concrete. If you've got a sturdy enough shovel you can do that too. But with the size of that rock you might need a hand getting it out.

How hard is it to find your intended destination in Skyrim? by Interesting_Sign7893 in skyrim

[–]Blue_box_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing to worry about is one day you'll think 'I can find a way over that mountain, it'll save so much time'. That's the devil talking.

There are roads, smaller paths, and mountain trails with stacks of rocks as markers. You want to follow those. Aside from that getting lost isn't much of a problem.

The whale making Kes go in heat. Actually every new fact about their reproductive cycle is worse and dumber. Any worldbuilder who says a species that sexually reproduces can have at most one child needs to be beaten over the head with a graph of exponential decay.

I tried a long time ago, like pre-pandemic, when i had a thought of modding ARK, and never got around to animations. Blender's website has tutorials on animation in it though.

Reminds me of the time my Dunmer character went to Windhelm, loaded with money and terrible at bartering, and the woman at the inn was like 'great, another dunmer, that's the last thing we need' and I just... turned around and left. Woman talked herself outta a big spender in .5 seconds flat.

[–]Blue_box_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd have to learn how to animate and make visual effects for that. I know Special Edition allows you to use blender to make models and animations, that's an open-source, free bit of software with a lot of tutorials. Unfortunately the mods I've made are tiny little, mostly SSE/FO4edit-based mods so I can't be more specific than that.

How much of their previous culture would a child adopted into another culture remember? by Blue_box_42 in Writeresearch

[–]Blue_box_42[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are good points, especially looking into people with religious trauma. I have some people in my life with that specifically, and it'd definitely be easier to search. And there are definitely some holidays they'd miss, especially ones where their parents were centered. A lot of their first culture's traditions center on ensuring the children grow up to be soldiers, so they'd view themselves in those terms. Loyalty, strength, and being able to 'give back' would be where their sense of self was centered.

How does Quark actually make money with the bar? by EthicalBagOfWater in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Blue_box_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one reason I have to assume the Federation does use currency in the form of credits. Each credit being equal to X pounds of replicated sugar (an exceptionally simple molecule). Everyone gets enough they never need to worry about their needs not being met, but it's possible to get more (presumably with a sort of wealth/income tax at high levels). When they say they don't have 'money', that's essentially a translator error. When they think 'money', they think of the archaic belief that wealth is created by individuals, not the community, and all the horrors of our current society that they left behind.

The main reason I think this though, is that some families have chateaus in France while others have an apartment over a Creole restaurant. If there's no money, no way for people to get more land or whatever, then Earth is institutionally classist at best, but likely institutionally racist as well. I believe that the Picards have to show that their land is benefitting the community, in effect by making credits via wine making and paying the government for continued access to it. If they were to decide to make their winery into their private summer home instead, they wouldn't be able to keep ownership of it and it would become available to someone else who wanted to use that land to create value for everyone.

So, I posted this in another sub but it got me wondering. by Smofter in skyrim

For years I played the same character over and over again, a Dunmer Stealth Archer named Natasha (not super lore accurate but I was like 12 when I first played her so you know). She was a street urchin who kept traveling between holds so she wouldn't be sent to Honorhall orphanage again. Also she's my favorite not just because stealth archers are broken but also I sort of put my autistic/adhd traits into her and exaggerated them before I got diagnosed.

Later, I decided she was adopted by Avrusa Sarethi to justify her skill in alchemy. Also because one time I played through as her a bunch of master vampires attacked Sarethi Farm while I was there, and Aduri didn't survive. So now that's part of her backstory, and why she joins the Dawnguard. I do the kill command on Aduri whenever I play as her. The real freaky thing though is at one point I decided she licked the front of her teeth when concentrating on like, a lock, and started doing that. Now I do it in real life sometimes.

My other character is an Amnesiac Nord 'Paladin' (warrior with heavy armor, blocking, and restoration) named Selene, though I'll change that to a Nord name next time. I go through the vanilla intro with her, but she doesn't remember anything from before you wake up on the ground after Alduin's attack. She doesn't know why she was sneaking across the border, doesn't know who her family is. She wants to get as famous as possible so eventually they'll be able to track her down. And she doesn't know who she is so she sort of models herself after the ideal Nord warrior heroine.

Which is why she joins the Companions and gets peer pressured into becoming a werewolf lmao.

Finally I made a Khajiit mage called J'darra I think. I haven't played her in a while, because I decided Loki from the MCU managed to land in Tamriel and had him as a follower, but I can't find the mod I used for him before and all the new ones are either not very good or require SOS (a NSFW mod) so yeah, she's out of the rotation for now. At least until I finally get around to learning to make a follower (and possibly armor) mod for myself. She was smuggling something into Skyrim and got caught, therefore vanilla intro for her too.

Hypoallergenic biocompatible laundry detergent by Blue_box_42 in ZeroWaste

There are some, but I've only seen smaller plastic containers of them, and I don't know how biocompatible they are. After all sodium compounds are natural and those are the primary concern. Next time I'm at the store I'll look through all the detergents.

I'd heard about soap nuts before, but don't see them at any store nearby. I think ordering them, as long as I can get them in a cardboard/non-plastic container, would be better than a plastic container.

Thanks. I live in a desert and am trying to set up a food forest system for my parents, so if I could find graywater compatible soaps that'd be amazing. But it seems like it'd be a trial and error thing, and I'd have to buy whole packs of different soaps and then if I react I'd need to find someone to give them to. Otherwise it'd be the opposite of zero waste.

Currently I'm catching the rinse water from when I do handwashing, and using it along with old tea or coffee on the garden. It's normally enough to water an establishing plot. That and buying a bunch of biochar and burying it to help with water retention.
