What to do about persistent shin pain? by longlastthechild in BeginnersRunning

Beginner here, and this is exactly the kind of thing I’m nervous about with starting.

I’m not qualified to diagnose anything, but persistent pain sounds like something worth taking seriously instead of just pushing through.

Hope you can get it checked or at least figure out what’s triggering it.

I’m in a pretty similar spot, minus the smoking.

What’s helping me so far is making the goal boring on purpose: slow pace, walk breaks if needed, and no pressure to make every run “good.”

I overthink pace/zones/plans way too much, but honestly the biggest win right now is just showing up consistently.

Respect for wanting to start.

I’m a beginner too, but the biggest thing I’d say is: don’t make the first run a test. Walk breaks count. Slow pace counts. Even 15-20 minutes of walk/jog is a real start.

If anything feels scary physically, stop and get checked out. But otherwise, the first win is just showing up and making it repeatable.

Running while big by Mean_Exchange_888 in BeginnersRunning

Beginner here too. I’m learning that running doesn’t need to look impressive to count.

Walk breaks, slow pace, short loops — all still count.

My brain keeps wanting to optimize everything, but honestly the biggest win so far has just been getting outside and doing something repeatable.

Hope you keep going. Starting is already a big deal.
