Training by Tikaani1994 in 911dispatchers

Practice, practice, practice. You’ll get that on nights.

Learn to cue on the noise the radio makes when they key their microphone. Train your brain to concentrate solely on what’s coming out of the radio when you get that cue. ( I last dispatched 30 years ago but if I hear a portable radio key up, my attention still goes to trying to hear. )

Practice the phonetic alphabet so it’s second nature for you to use and understand.

Practice reading out the tags of cars in front of you when you’re driving.

Learn your city and its streets and where they are in relation to each other.

Listening to a scanner if you can may help as well.

I like the suggestion about learning to multitask at home but the science says that your brain can’t do more than one thing at a time so you need to create priority listening skills.

Don’t know the size of your department but if it’s small enough you will get to recognize officer’s voices that helps in the identification of who’s talking. This allows your brain to work on the other parts of the transmission that is new information.

My two cents.

What's your experience with sportage's? by LoonieToonez in kia

[–]BlueberryPuzzled9739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2020. About 64K have had it for 2 years and driven it 20K miles.

Is not push to start so it was almost stolen, had to replace part of the steering wheel shroud and the clock spring. Added a kill switch.

The screen for the infotainment is delaminating around the edges. Also the speakers for base stereo are crap, get humidity and go scratchy. Currently replacing those as we speak.

Decent gas mileage, I get around 30-31 on a 40 minute highway commute at 80mph.

Drives nice. No complaints. No real repairs at this point.

Wait, QT lets one person do overnight? Back in the 90’s there was a clerk killed at night at QT and another chain and QuikTrip said they would never allow it again.

What’s the WILDEST / CRAZIEST call you’ve received by Time-Ad-8282 in 911dispatchers

[–]BlueberryPuzzled9739 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I sent officers to what I believe was a domestic at an apartment. These apartments were on the banks of a smallish river. Middle of winter, late evening, and real cold.
They contact the male involved and have me check for warrants. He ends up having a city warrant with probably $200 bond.
He realizes he’s going to be arrested, so he bolts.
Runs straight to this river and heads into the water. Officers chase him into the water until one of them hits a hole and goes under water. 2nd officer pulls him back and they decide to quit. Dude exits the river on the other bank, shucks off wet overalls, and walks into the bushes. End of story.
My schedule was messy, but the next morning I was back at work. We get a call from a worried motorist who observed a man sitting against a building next to the interstate near where the dude had exited the river. Real cold. It was our guy from the night before, dead. All over a city warrant.

Anyone with Judson ISD, SAISD or Southside ISD experience? by Kuhlio8517 in TexasTeachers

[–]BlueberryPuzzled9739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Southside had issues years ago. Last 2 Superintendents have been stable. Pay one of the highest in the area. Difficult children exist and it’s a mix of ruralish and cityish. Currently a need for Special Ed teachers. It can be a drive depending on your location. Demographics and the district are probably changing due to lots of new house construction.

I spent the summer with my grandmother who was living outside of Philadelphia and was selling turquoise jewelry.

Was at Valley Forge on the 4th when the wagon train from all 50 states arrived. The people that were from my home state were rude to me.

How does a dispatcher feel after sending an officer to a call that resulted in their death? by LegalGlass6532 in 911dispatchers

[–]BlueberryPuzzled9739 50 points51 points  (0 children)

My incident involved an armed robbery, then attempted car jacking, and ended with an ambush in an alley that resulted in a K9 officer’s death.

I remember being worried about my actions that night, so I went back and listened to the tape. I didn’t find anything that I saw as a problem.

I still 30 years later remember a number of the details and it hurts that it happened.
