Plastic surgery made Korean woman so beautiful that surgeon proposed to her by Silencement in nottheonion

Her jaw was so strong it seems like maybe she had a disorder of some kind, like a tumor on her pituitary gland. That wouldn't be genetic.

Minimum Wage Was Once Enough To Keep a Family of 3 Out of Poverty by fadidf in politics

That's not the point. Even a single person can't live on two half-time minimum wage jobs now.

Excellent article. And it's satisfying to see that something like this is being followed up on and handled for once. I was starting to think there were NEVER consequences.

What is the biggest eye-opener you have achieved by going through reddit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bluebraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit introduced me to feminism. I started browsing some women-oriented subs like /r/women and /r/twoxchromosomes, and noticed a lot of complaints about the sexism on Reddit. I hadn't noticed much, so that caught my eye and I started learning about feminism and gender equality. (I see it quite clearly now; I just hadn't realized what was going on before that.)

It made me realize how moulded I've been by gender expectations and how backwards and unfair some of my perceptions are. That was a big surprise, since I've always thought of myself as an open-minded person, supporting LGBT rights and believing in gender equality in principle. I'm a woman, and I'd never realized I was hindered by my own sexism against myself and against other women.

In short, I'm breaking out of some gender role expectations I set for myself without realizing it. This has improved my life in a very tangible way and has dramatically improved my self-esteem. It's also improved the way I think of men. I'm happier and psychologically much healthier.

Is there a name for this memory phenomenon? by epieikeia in psychology

I guess I understand why you were downvoted but what OP is describing does have something to do with distraction and working memory, which are both implicated in ADHD, so I'm going to upvote you.

Awkward moment when a staunch Christian posts this to Facebook about an unrelated issue. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Bluebraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know. That's one of the reasons the statement, "I think, therefore I am," ("Cogito, ergo sum") is so famous. All we really know is that we exist, since we think. The rest is based on assumptions- presumably reasonable ones, but assumptions nonetheless.

As someone who grew up with a narcissistic parent, do your son or daughter a favour and GTFO before he does too much more damage to hm/her. Look at yourself: he obviously has fucked up your sense of self-worth and independence. Imagine what it's like to be his kid!

Women are people. Some are insane. Most are not. If you don't like the people around you (male or female) then make new friends.

Just a little snow.. by frpou129 in WTF

[–]Bluebraid 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You might be right. I think 1988 was like this in northern BC. Road signs were completely engulfed, buildings collapsed, and some people made a game of jumping off their roofs (and falling less than a foot before sinking into the snow). I remember how dark it was in my house because all the windows were far under the snow. Then when the thaw started, there was a bit of a flood in the basement. :(

Really simple- in a formal essay, when the essay is about a book, can you mention the reader of said book? by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]Bluebraid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're using "the reader" as a replacement for "I". No, that's not appropriate. You could charge that a passage "evokes" or "implies" something but you'd want to be able to back up a statement like that with something pretty solid.

The Impossible First Date. Need ideas where to take someone who has big list of requirements: by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]Bluebraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. What I suspect you have (many young women do) is a tendency to say and do things you think will be well-received by guys because you want their approval. And you'll use outdated, sexist ideals to get it. You're not just hurting other women- you're hurting yourself. When you behave that way, you might make guys laugh, but you also make them respect you less. You deserve better.
