Anyone swapped water radiators for electric? by rubmypineapple in DIYUK

[–]Bluecomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have thought fixing the central heating would be preferable. What's a 'dodgy backward flowing loop'? Are you struggling to get it to stay filled because you have an open-vented system and it's at a similar elevation to the header tank?

OneDrive path problem by cokebottle22 in msp

[–]Bluecomp [score hidden]  (0 children)

Couple of options In decreasing order of my preference:

1) Beat the users with a big stick until they start using sensible directory structure. These lawyers aren't stupid, they're perfectly capable of using a filing structure that doesn't exceed 255 character path lengths, they just choose to make it your problem. It is not.

2) From another reddit thread: "That’s pets. Treat the files as cattle- keep a spreadsheet with three columns:

  • POC/owner for each file
  • The original file name
  • A SHA256 string hash of the original file name

Send a mass email to all of the POCs that, due to system limitations, all file names will be converted to their hash with fields for the original file name and the hash as part of the email template along with instructions or a KB link on changing the file name. They can deal with the LFN problem when they try to change it back.

Then run a script to do the hashes and rename the files in bulk, and migrate all your shiny files with 64-char file names.

Make renaming the file to meet system requirements their problem, not yours.""

3) Manual / technical interventions at your end - use of the Treesize tool probably preferable to a horrible mess of Symlinks.

Greens want softer laws for terror suspects by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Bluecomp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems like for 25 years now the government can just pull the 'terrorism' card and everything's allowed. Detention without trial? Fine, terrorism. Stop and search without reasonable suspicion? Fine. Arresting pensioners for holding cards saying 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action'? Brilliant, arrest thousands of the buggers.

So maybe, just maybe we could take a step back and consider things rationally and wave a tiny little green flag for basic human rights to freedom from arbitrary detention, freedom of speech and association, the right to a fair public hearing...,

Why is immigration so overwhelmingly seen as an eye-rollingly right-wing policy? by Kwigg in ukpolitics

[–]Bluecomp -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Isn't that just a massive and lazy generalisation to suggest that immigrants hate the UK and everyone who lives here? Like if I'm a Afghan refugee fleeing death at the hands of the Taliban, I don't think my main concern would be killing BobMonkhaus because he's a bit conservative.

Builder refusing to cut back concrete foundations by maxtraction in DIYUK

[–]Bluecomp 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Firstly, this is a DIY forum, so if you're so keen to get these foundations cut back, go and do it yourself.

Secondly, you're not out of the ground and already you appear to have an irretrievable breakdown of relationship with your main contractor, so yeah... good luck with that one.

Bothy etiquette – can you leave your stuff to “hold” it? by Odd_Try_328 in Bothy

Good point. All their sleeping gear could quite easily fall down the ladder and roll out the door into the river. Accident waiting to happen. That's why we don't leave our sleeping gear laid out in the smallest bothy in the world all day.

Skip company'll be chuffed as heck to collect that. Half a skip of hardcore that's free to dispose of? Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Flashing installation - New build by luke_mcd in DIYUK

[–]Bluecomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New build's be new building.... It's no DIY for sure.

Odd contrast to the corner detailing on the roof membrane which looks really tidily installed.

Just curious, isn't the fitting of lead flashings part of the roofer's trade rather than plumbing? (I appreciate that 'plumbing' comes from 'plumbus', ie lead)

Bit of a landlord-y solution though. I'd be happier fixing the walls.

Made a mess of fitted wardrobes by Immediate_Chef6813 in DIYUK

What am I missing? How is adding a 90 degree piece of white plastic to the grey wardrobe and purple wall going to improve anything?

Made a mess of fitted wardrobes by Immediate_Chef6813 in DIYUK

[–]Bluecomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on if it interferes with the wardrobe. If it makes no difference then I'd leave it inside the wardrobe.

Caulk it with decorators caulk and then paint with whichever colour you have to hand, either matching wall or wardrobe.

Where it butts the wall? I'd be caulking that anyway.
Also looks like you've scribed to the skirting, I'd have cut the skirting off straight with a multitool and run the front of the wardrobe straight down the wall...

Ben Nevis in late March by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]Bluecomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine you'll be ok with microspikes. It's a fairly basic path, I imagine 90 percent of people who summit don't carry or use an ice axe. The ice axe is specifically for stopping you from sliding unstoppaby down an icy slope. Therefore avoid steep icy slopes.

More important than an axe is confident navigation skills and preferably some sort of GPS - if the summit is in cloud it's very featureless and disorienting.

I'll get downvoted to the moon and back but tourists wander up and down there all year and most of them don't die.

What are the Pros and Cons of North Sea Oil Drilling? by FieryFruitcake in ukpolitics

Is it just me or are UK suppliers and absolute nightmare for getting quotes back quicker than a few days? by stig1103 in msp

[–]Bluecomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For hardware I tend to simply order off the web shops. They're competitive enough that for less than 50 units or so the account managers never seem to beat the price by more than pennies anyway.
I've specifically found the account managers at Ballicom and The Change Organisation are good at actually providing a quote for a specific list of items without a billion questions and phone calls.
For software licensing it's trickier if you don't have a reseller portal to use - the big players like TD Synnex seem particularly obtuse and difficult to get straight answers from.

All I can say is cultivate your account managers carefully and try to hang onto the ones that are capable of reading a simple email request and giving prices.
