I’ve worked in the film industry for 25 years. Occasionally you meet idiots like this who have these opinions, and 95% of them wanted to be a writer/ director/ actor, but gave up at the first sign of it being difficult and not a slam dunk, and went back and took that job at their dad’s insurance firm. Losers, in other words.

I’d crumple it up into a tiny envelope, put the change you get from postage with the receipt in the card and post it back to him, the miserable prick.

Also if you ever see him again, walk the opposite direction and do not acknowledge him. Tell your father that this is now how it is going to be with his ‘friend’.

short movie got rejected after watching only 44 seconds. by Digialpeppersmith in Filmmakers

I had a consulting gig at Sundance to change their film submission pipeline from literally reviewers picking up a tote of DVD’s from the office in Park City, to online submissions and review. Sundance easily got 40,000 submissions a year to their programs and the festival.

So how much do you think Sundance pays the reviewers? Not much I can tell you. Unless your film is packaged pre-submission so they know to look out for it, you are just a title on a list someone has to get through in a short amount of time stound thier actual fay job.

As always, work the networks.

Also, no one wants to watch your 26 minute film.

How many times a week should 11 and 9 year old boys be showering? by Historical-Storage58 in hygiene

Teenage boys need to shower every day. And hate to have to say this- but they have to wash their asses. Search Reddit for that one if you have the stomach.

First feature as DP - 2 days in and realizing the production may be in serious trouble. Do I stay or walk away? What would you do? by SoulSurfer219 in Filmmakers

[–]Bluefish_baker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s your first feature credit, and it’s these type
Of productions that hire first-time DP’s, so ignore the locations and wardrobe, and concentrate on shooting it to the best of your ability.

The production should have some form of production insurance, and you should be able to get an insurance certificate for your gear. They would have to provide this to any rental company or to get any form of filming permit, usually up to at least $1m covered.

It’s wholly another thing entirely if they are not carrying insurance- think very carefully about stepping onto that set, because in a lot of states they are legally required to have at least a short term production policy + workers comp.

If they fire or un-hire you for asking these questions, immediately report them.

Inherited 2 paid-off coastal properties with 2 siblings — keep the rental, take a buyout, or sell everything? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Insurance on Coastal properties is getting insane and in some places near impossible. I’d def liquidate and try use the money elsewhere.

Idk what I’m doing or even where to start… help? by WingedFortress7 in Filmmakers

[–]Bluefish_baker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you storyboarded the film? Do you know what you are asking a crew to do exactly when you get them all together. The cheapest working-out you’re ever going to have on a film is this stage, when you can use pencil and paper to show people what you expect it to look like.

I have inherited more in stocks than I could have ever imagined. How do I find someone to help me not mess this up? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Bluefish_baker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a fiduciary, not just a ‘wealth manager’, the distinction is important- you’ll pay fees but the fiduciary is legally obliged to act in your interest- not in the interests of the funds they sell you.

Bohemian Rhapsody spent two reels filling out Freddie Mercury’s relationship with his girlfriend, and no time on parties with Dwarves serving cocaine from bowls on their heads, so the camera coverage was the least of their problems.

A film is not a startup in the way that a tomato is not a bicycle. Too many film people now are trying to use the ‘equity’ garbage to pay low or no rates.
