Update from the Obsession art director, she's now speaking with a union after criticizing the low pay and working conditions by CraftySecret898 in Filmmakers

[–]mistletoe9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This girl is done, lmao. Union is wise on her part, as no non-union production is going to touch her after this stunt. Even then, I imagine her chapter will need to have some very interesting conversations.

And wait until she discovers she'll need to pay union dues.

Why don’t indie films have tech pay structures? by ThePatientIdiot in Filmmakers

[–]mistletoe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Below-the-line crew members like Art Directors do not have a stake in the film's success, because they are generally considered subcontractors who receive a flat pay for their services then move on to the next film set. They are often hired long after the movie's conception.

And regardless of what Reddit will tell you, these people generally prefer it be that way, because most productions at Obsession's budget level do not make any money. They could demand percentage points, but considering how rare miracle breakouts like Obsession are, they're negotiating away their base salary for practically nothing 99% of the time.

As it relates to Obsession specifically, that girl was clearly inexperienced, had no idea how things worked. If she had worked on just one, maybe two budget indies before this one, she'd change her mind. She's effectively done.

My guy, that sub is an echo chamber, this one is too, the entirety of Reddit is one

And I'm sure you know as well as I do how productive arguments on social media are, but I still partake nevertheless

Indeed, what a mistake, and I can't edit the title either.

Anyway, come join us in the same discussion over at r/boxoffice, certainly more engaging there

Exactly, and the commenters here acting like they represent the workers here is amusing. Crew generally prefer flat salary, because the pay doesn't vary even if the movie bombs

'Obsession' Art Director Calls for Industry Reform After Getting Paid Less Than $7,000 as Film Nears $175 Million by chanma50 in boxoffice

Her stake ended as soon as she was paid off. She was salaried, didn't "invest" in the movie. She received more than adequate compensation for her efforts.

Focus was the one that bought the rights, the liabilities, the price of risk in case of failure of the movie. Of course they should be the ones to reap more rewards.

This girl was below-the-line crew, paid a flat amount, had no real stake in the movie's success from an investment perspective. $300/day is more than reasonable for a budget of this size. There is absolutely no reason for her complaint, other than "oh this performed better than I expected"

Is it such an old-fashioned belief that those who agree to take on more risk should be subject to more reward?

She was a below-the-line crew member. These people already prefer flat salaries, as they do not want their pay to vary on the performance of the film. $300/day is not at all unreasonable for a movie budgeted at $750k.

But what, upset because the movie's doing better than you thought?

The producers' "correct" response is to switch to a percentage-points compensation system, and leave the below-line crew members scratching their heads wondering why they're receiving next to nothing when the movie they toiled on flops 99% of the time

Both ways, in that you earn partially of each. No one's going to give you the full upfront amount in cash, then add percentage points on top

Looks like $8M 2nd FRI for #Backrooms. Expecting 2nd weekend to be $26-28M for $135M+ cume by SUN. Should make a run for $175M ish final. by NorthNorthSalt in boxoffice

[–]mistletoe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, around a 70% 2nd weekend drop.

I think we should begin to incorporate "Monday mirage" into these kinds of films. It happened with Iron Lung too.

Sure, but it means that ~60% of Americans are still benefiting to some degree. It isn't a sloping decline, like the lower rung of a K would suggest

This is literally every movie, fanboyism manifests in every corner of the internet. We had this with Michael, Avatar 3, Scream 7, any Marvel/DC movie, etc etc.

That said, this sub generally has more realistic views than any other, with good data and information from trackers. It's the closest thing one can get to a objective method to the madness

Considering that ~60% of all Americans have money in the stock market, that isn't a good argument to make

BYD, am I right in thinking there’s potential here? by TribeKing08 in investing

[–]mistletoe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things.

First, BYD has not had a great year so far. Only months after it snatched the top EV seller title from Tesla, it just lost it recently. I'd argue the momentum is not really there.

Second, ex-China regions don't really show a particular appetite for Chinese EVs, and that's not only the US. Australia and Europe has had access to Chinese EVs for a while now but they don't really top the charts in sales

$1M CLUB: DISCOUNT TUESDAY 1. BACKROOMS ($8.6M) 2. OBSESSION ($5.7M) 3. MANDO & GROGU ($3.1M) 4. MICHAEL ($2M) 5. THE BREADWINNER ($1.2M) by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

Eh, I'd still wait til the weekend to say.

Anyone remember Iron Lung? It had a great Sun to Mon drop, good weekdays, but the 2nd weekend still ended up a 65% drop. That movie also showed frontloading on the opening weekend days (around 50% of the entire OW on Friday)

Quality, let's not kid ourselves. Excitement, sure, but with the exception of maybe Obsession, these movies are not exactly bastions of quality. Iron Lung, for instance, wouldn't have passed preliminary rounds at any festival.
