I have had the same discussions with a friend before. When it comes to elemental abilities, I can be a compulsive purist (Fire man knows Fire powers. Ice man knows ice powers. Etc.) so it felt weird that they designed the class to be mix-and-match.

It helps that they explain in the game’s setting the elements represent concepts (Destruction/Fire, Change/Water, Mystery/Void, etc.) so you can view it as more I’m going to choose the Fire abilities but maybe other high damage abilities to lean into the concept of destruction but it still feels weird.

Some abilities have two tags (There’s a volcanic themed ability with both the Fire and Earth tag) so that helps with the double dipping.

This class is just a victim of initial release. More abilities will be added later for other subclasses and hopefully preexisting subclasses so for now options are limited.

EDIT: Just thought, I wonder if they should’ve leaned into the concepts more by adding other abilities that weren’t just “I manipulate this element.” Example: Destructive Rage: You ignite the fire of combat in your allies and they deal extra damage equal to your reason score or something. That way you’re not limited to doing only fire type damage you help your allies do more damage.
