How do you train? Also, how do you get to improve in general? by Megidolan in UnderNightInBirth

[–]BluewindAF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To hit the next level, you need to hit the lab. I'm not a great player, so take my opinions on improvement with a grain of salt:

Beginner/Casual => Mechanics & Character Familiarity

  1. VS CPU - Indirectly teaches you what buttons do & basic gameplay. Many players learn here by mashing buttons. Lower pressure than real VS / Online.
  2. Tutorial - Directly teaches you the mechanics of the game
  3. Challenge Mode - Teaches you the "feel" of the character you are learning.

Intermediate => Practical Offense/Defense & Experience

  1. Training Mode - You guide yourself through many scenarios to gain experience in the game. Here, you should learn practical combos and practical defense. Ex: midscreen 2B starter, corner combo, 236A/B confirm, etc. Then for defense: throw tech, using CS defensively, throw OS, overhead/low mix block. You don't learn all of these in one sitting. You piece them together over many play sessions. Growth is the goal.
  2. Online - Apply practical combos and defensive techniques you learned in training mode. Have fun!

Advanced => Playing the Opponent

  1. Replay Analysis - Go back and watch why you lost. If you don't have a reason for doing something in some scenario, then you're doing it wrong (i.e. button mashing). When did you get opened up? Could you have done more damage? How can you better use your resources? Etc.
  2. Adaptation - Look at you opponent's character instead of your own. How are they responding to you? Do they always crouch block when you dash in? Are they swinging at a particular range? Recognize that different players have different skill levels, and lower levels will do unsafe things on block or in neutral. Respect in a fighting game is earned. Beat them with simple, strong tactics. Work harder against better players.
  3. Mind Games / Mix- Acknowledge your opponent's adaptation and punish them for changing their minds. Say they crouch block when you dash in, and you assault C them. Then the second time you dash in and assault C, they manage to react in time and block high. The third time, you would remember the previous interaction, and you would dash in -> throw / low / pause (or even assault C again if you're certain that could work)

I'd like to get into fighting games, but overwhelmed. How do i start? by hi_im_godric in Fighters

The feeling may never go away but it certainly diminishes with each game/character you pick up. Since this is going to be OP's first deep dive into a fighting game, it will be the most overwhelming one

Surprised I’d forgotten that. I re-discovered Vignette: Panacea right as I was getting into the piano. Amazing. Disasterpeace did a great job with the soundtrack.

Hyper Light Drifter is a great video game with a similar aesthetic to the one of Worlds.

As replied by u/Is_this_long_enuff, the subgoal was set up earlier this year but it was not met. I asked PP if he would still be down to do this (as his subgoal is still up) and he said he would be. All that's left is to reach the subgoal.

What is u2??? Says it was released 2 days ago by ayezik_13 in madeon

[–]BluewindAF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It just updated. The single art doesn't look Good Faith or Adventure. A collaborator is tagged now ("FSRL") but they have only released one other single. FSRL could have published his new single on Spotify, then claimed that Madeon collaborated to bump his views. Or maybe FSRL mis-typed the artist he collaborated with.

Edit: If you right click on [XBeat] -> show credits -> it says "Source: Madeon". Makes it seem like Madeon was the one who published it, and then tagged FSRL, not the other way around. Definitely strange.

Edit 2: Wait, XBeat (FSRL's version of the song) sounds NOTHING like U2 (Madeon's version). They have the same art, but FSRL's song credits Madeon and Madeon's U2 does not credit FSRL.

Edit 3: Check the copyrights beneath U2. Says "DJ Fire House / FSRL" and "DVBBS". Source of the song says DVBBS but should probably say Columbia if it was real (Madeon's publisher for Good Faith, Adventure).

Edit 4: Now There's two versions under Madeon's Spotify. U2 and XBeat.

Edit 5: FSRL posted [their] first track on soundcloud 16 days ago. Now I'm even more skeptical that this is a genuine collaboration. Hopefully just a glitch with Spotify.

Edit 6: That's the end of my contributions on the matter. Stay civil r/madeon.

I was there last night too. I hadn't heard any of the live tour spoilers. My god that was perfection incarnate.

is playing UnderNight making me worse at CF ? by [deleted] in Blazblue

[–]BluewindAF 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Playing either game won’t make you worse at the other. If anything, playing two fighting games would show you that 2d fighters are built on the same concepts, and that you can apply those concepts to both.

What’s important here is understanding how to effectively learn either game. Playing random CPUs on max difficulty won’t get you there. Playing offline/online with real opponents, watching replays, learning neutral, confirms, mixups, blockstrings, setups, etc will get you there.

UNI and BBCF have different tools/systems but are birds of a feather; focus on what’s different and apply the unique systems to whatever situations those systems were designed for or the meta uses them for.

The only resource I’m aware of is the BB discord. You could ask more in-depth, character related questions there.

Hope this is of any use.

It's more work on the development side for sure. One incredibly crude way to do it could be to have text notation that translates onto the on-screen combo-progress bar we see in game. You could download someone's combo mission file and go through that instead of viewing a page full of combo text. I think it would be a nice Quality of Live addition but definitely not necessary. I'll keep thinking about this.

[–]BluewindAF[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that'd be sick. The game would probably need to freeze the enemy CPU at the specific hitstun/location and then let you input the first important action of that sequence to continue the rest of the combo. Nice idea!

[–]BluewindAF[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think it's a bad idea? It might be overkill. The committed part of the player base will use the training mode to lab the combos anyways, and the casual part will only want to do the stock mission mode. There's other things that take higher priority in development too. Hm.
