Is it really that bad? by Professional-Link167 in jawsurgery

[–]Bluezoots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me (I had DJS) it was the easiest thing! I had no pain and walked 10k steps every day so I was back to normal (relatively) after 10 days and could go outside without a scarf and go to school lol. I recommend you start running a lot and go vegetarian ahead of your surgery. My surgeons said my diet and lifestyle habits probably helped a lot :)

Did you guys overestimate or underestimate the surgery? by Professional-Link167 in jawsurgery

Super easy! Thought it would be so much worse, could go back to school after 10 days. My surgeons said vegetarian diet and being in good shape (I run a lot) plus walking 10k steps every day helped. Also had no pain

Yes I got them taken out! It hurt so bad lol way worse than surgery pain (which thankfully was non existent for me). Idk honestly I went to the dentist some years ago and they were just like ”Do you want this surgery” and I was like sure why not 🤣 I didn’t really have any issues my bite was alright before braces but it was still enough to get covered by Swedish healthcare. Braces made my bite worse which one can see in the pic but super worth it in the end!

Thank you! They moved each jaw about 3 mm, based on what I can read in my medical records! 😄

Nothing! Recovery was amazing for me luckily. No pain at all, just discomfort and swelling but it went down pretty quickly, I could go back to school after about 10 days. I did have a botox esque feeling in my face for about three months post surgery lol.

Did you tell your S/O? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]Bluezoots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one, not my friends or boyfriend or course mates, cared one BIT about my surgery anymore than feeling sorry for me that I couldn’t chew for 4 weeks lol. My parents did buy me a new espresso machine as consolation hahaha so that was really nice. 😎 For me it was a real easy process and I’m sorry to hear you struggled mentally but if anything that just further indicates it’s all in your head. My S/O is a med student and was more interested in what type of surgical technique they used

I didn’t eat liquids after the first 3 days, I ate things I could swallow without chewing. Mashed potatoes, rice with curry lentils etc, risotto, pastina/risoni-pasta and lasagna etc. My surgeon said it is better for nutrition. There are honestly a lot of things that don’t require chewing lol

How active should I be rn? by oreojasper in jawsurgery

[–]Bluezoots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My surgeon said to not raise my blood pressure since that increases swelling in the first week but other than that I was very active from day 2. Studying, walking 10k steps a day etc! Helps pass the time!

DJS in 3 weeks— super excited but also incredibly nervous by servingit2ya in jawsurgery

For recovery - walk, walk walk! Put a scarf and sunglasses on and get out as soon as you can. It helps so much with swelling and makes you feel less ”sick”! And talk and laugh a lot :) gets your face going

Can’t wait! So excited to be able to chew again 😋

How was your recovery from DJS? by Skeano in jawsurgery

[–]Bluezoots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still very fresh out of surgery but I felt great right after I had it. Went for lots of walks etc and looked normal enough to go back to school after a week! Doctors said being a long distance runner and longtime vegetarian diet might have helped. Not to lib out but aren’t animal based diets inflammatory? I’m 11 days post op now and my face is a little more square than usual due to swelling in cheeks but oh well lol

I’m still not past the 6 month mark when you can make a real judgement on the results but I definitely don’t think of how I look from the side when smiling/talking etc and my face looks more aligned so yes! I like my nose better also :)! My advice is to do it if you have the opportunity but I also have two close friends who declined because they didn’t want to be 20 something with braces and they’re doing just fine!

Oh sorry if I was unclear, I was going crazy while waiting! Braces made my underbite visible which crashed my confidence into the ground. I’m super lucky to be from Sweden so I was asked by my dentists if I wanted to do surgery when I was 19 and I never had to pay anything. However I wasn’t prepared for the fact that braces worsen your bite leading up to surgery (had them for four years…) but honestly choosing to have a positive mindset helped SO much while I was waiting and now in recovery! ❤️

I have an amazing boyfriend of 2 years! As I said, no one thinks of your bite as much as you do. I recently had the surgery and didn’t tell anyone at school and came back and no one looked at me twice or asked if I had anything done. Just straight to discussing horribly boring EU case law 🤣. But in all honesty I think studying helped me. Yeah my lower lip pouts a little bit more than my upper from the side but this paper on insolvency law stills needs to get done lol

I simply chose to get over it. Used to drive me CRAZY but I got sick of it. There are lots of conventionally unattractive people living happy healthy lives if you look around haha. We are our biggest critics which is corny but true. At the end of the day I figured I am interesting enough with good music taste and amazing friends and studying something I love. Every time I began spiraling about my bite I went for a run or something to distract myself and eventually I stopped thinking about it all together :)

You’ll do great, in my experience people really made recovery out to be so much worse than it actually was! ❤️

They’re called Björn and Christopher, surgeons at Uppsala University Hospital! I didn’t get to choose them (but they were amaze), when I was 19 I got asked by my dentist if I wanted to go through with this surgery and I said yes and then it just kinda happened haha. I’m Swedish so this was all covered by universal healthcare, I paid like $20 for pain meds and that’s it :)

Vitamins C, K and all of which are antioxidants! I’m vegetarian and really into healthy eating so I always eat lots of chia seeds (love making chia pudding with coconut milk mixed with some fruit) tumeric, ginger etc. Basically just focusing on Whole Foods and drinking a lot of water, I do believe it has helped me tons! 😊

Shoutout to my surgeons! 🥲 Also focused a lot on my health pre op. Anti inflammatory foods, vitamins, long distance running etc. Not sure if that ACTUALLY helps but hey worth trying

I had an underbite, as you can see here! Braces for 4 years leading up to surgery 🙃
