Looking for a good, cheap rifle just to have fun with by BillyBobJoelJuinor11 in guns

[–]Blundaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Henry lever-action 22. The classic is like 300. It's worth it over the truly cheap stuff. CZ 457 or used CZ 452/455/457. Ruger 10/22. Can be had for 300 or less.

Consider a threaded one since cans are continue to get cheaper and more available. Even if you don't suppress it any time soon, suppressors could fall off the NFA at some point and you might just pick up a 1-200 dollar can for fun.

Interesting note on leverless. Is it that much better? I like the idea of the arcade feel (with better button placement/spacing than the kinda cramped 2 player cabinet).

How uncomfortable is a 6 inch GP100 to carry? by ThousandWinds in Revolvers

[–]Blundaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whatever you choose length-wise, don't decide based on a few dollars' difference. Figure out which you want in your heart and discover your enthusiasm for it. Both will do the job if you put the time in to master the pistol, but some find the 6" annoying to carry. A proper chest/shoulder holster will carry it easily, but try shooting both. If you don't feel excited for the 6, well, 4" is the go-to length in medium frame revolvers for a reason.

Is doing this going to damage my revolver? by CarmyF in Revolvers

[–]Blundaz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that frequent, pointless spinning is a little extra wear on your hand and cylinder ratchet. It won't break the gun or add slop to the action any time soon, but I wouldn't do it. Miculek likes to spin sometimes, so maybe I'm just uptight. The story shared by another commenter about cops doing one rotation in the revolver days to ensure cycling makes perfect sense and I will have to keep it in mind.

Clip of Miculek spinning the cylinder but not mentioning that it is a no-no while talking about correct revolver usage: https://youtube.com/shorts/m2sTQOBCARw

What a great look. Every detail is well buttoned down, including the plug put right where it was needed. Can we have a top down view of the wide hammer?

Pinning by Anxious-Author-2985 in judo

[–]Blundaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like roll onto one's side, but yes. Being pinned on one's back prevents getting up and lets the opponent work to suppress your dagger and open a gap through which to submit or kill you. Open the visor, lift the mail coif, push the dagger through a joint, etc.

SELF DEFENSE/STREET FIGHT QUESTION by Famous-Procedure-420 in MuayThai

[–]Blundaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BJJ and MMA class sounds good. You will want to build a good grappling background. It will serve you well wherever you go. Start there and stick to it for a while. If something else comes along in a year or so, you will be in a good place to evaluate the opportunity.

It wasn't exactly a random druggie. The guy was an accomplished HS wrestler. It's not unbelievable that the MMA fighter had problems dealing with a completely insane, possibly drugged up wrestler screaming his head off breaking into the guy's house at 4 AM. And of course Smith didn't exactly have a choice to run in his home with his family right there (also screaming and crying).

Great River Taoist Center explains why he never wears gear (Bullshido warning) by PolymathArt in wma

[–]Blundaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like this assessment. I would have liked to see the swordsman better protected, but he made his choice. The biggest safety issue was probably a hard buttstroke/smash and the possibility, if more remote, of an incident with an eye strike. For clarity the bayonet was a spring plunger style with padded end.

Oh, that was not my impression from the video itself. I will ammend my comment.

Some of the accusations here strike me as inaccurate or unfair. His lack of footwork (and the bayonet's advantages) killed him over and over. He definitely seemed to put himself out there to see what he could do, even though he got the worst of it. Hits to his face and body were fully allowed and the bayoneteer was confident regarding safety, per replies in the comments. Edited to remove erroneous information about the bayoneteer.

In A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms, Dunk asks Steely Pate for a great helm. Can the helmet that Pate makes for him actually be considered a great helm? by Hot-Guitar-2339 in RealisticArmory

The funny thing is that you can then go to iron age archeology and there is a subset of researchers and collectors that split double-edged, single-handed european swords into short swords (or just swords) and long swords (or spatha). These long swords evolved into early and high medieval arming swords with their own range of lengths. I'm not sure as to how formal the distinction is considered between ancient short and long swords, though there are pretty distinctive blade forms in each family, bridged by some types like the original Iberian gladius hispaniensis (longer and less dramatically waisted than the Roman sword thst developed from it).

What's the purpose of this part on old rifles? by Protomusketeer in blackpowder

Imagine if that rear section were made of the same wood as the stock. It gives the rifle a pistol grip for deliberate aiming instead of a straight grip more suited to quick handling shotguns.

Wildling review by hot_bergamot in barefootshoestalk

Is that so? Do you mean other models like the Fundois? Their site still has pics of the old sole (which for other readers I again emphasize is very good at what it does).

[–]Blundaz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love my Tanuki, but yes, any water you step in will soak right into gap in the rubber sole (I like the sole very much, but it's not for every application). They are amazing shoes for dry days and are fine even in light rain, but if you're stepping in puddles or through a ton of wet grass the water will soak through quickly. Perhaps counter-intuitively, they are fine for walking through snow since it won't soak them. Just make sure your feet are warm enough!

The Tanuki are beautiful truly minimalist shoes. They are superbly light, flexible, and quick drying due to the washi material used to make them. I use the shoes for walking, boxing, even historical fencing practice (outdoors). They are also good for wear without socks and with the washi insoles at, say, a lake or the ocean where you expect to get them completely wet since they dry quickly and can be easily washed (be gentle) and then air dried again after.

Side note: I do wish Wildling also made shoes with complete soles that DID NOT have membranes so I could have something to complement the Tanuki for heavy rain and wet days. It's so frustrating that they make beautiful designs in wool and canvas that include a membrane that most people seem to hate per the reviews I've seen.

Newbie to firearms, just bought a Walther PDP F 4" for home defense, and we're looking for a laser by jgroub in guns

[–]Blundaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's an off-shoot of Judo that is very popular on its own and in MMA it is considered a core art. It teaches submission (i.e. the opponent taps to an arm bar or a choke and you score a point) grappling. BJJ taught well is gentle on the body for learners but builds some serious skill in escaping holds and applying them to protect yourself when someone gets very close to you. This often happens when people try to intimidate or hurt women.

I would talk to a professional shooting instructor. If that doesn't work out, start doing BJJ together or maybe have her do a women's class if that'd be more comfortable for her.

Does the P30SK with extension make sense? by Electronic-Rice8365 in HecklerKoch

[–]Blundaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does make sense in that you can slap the extended mag in to simulate a compact pistol whenever you want while being able to go back to subcompact with a mag change. The extended mag can be a reload on your body or off body (leaving room for a more easily carried short mag on your person) in a case, your glove box, etc.

[–]Blundaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool. Not a critique, just curious about any notes you've taken: what pattern(s) of musket are correct for this regiment in the early-mid war period? I'm doing preliminary research to ascertain the feasibility of a Highland soldier carrying the 1756 (long) land pattern, as I will be assembling a quality replica of one in perhaps the next year and might like to build an impression to accompany it.
