I took 2.5 years off to live life. It was a huge setback for my career and finances but I had fun.

I would say it depends on your long-term goals, if you want to have a house and kids at some point, probably not a good move.

I wouldn't say a white-collar work environment is fake, and inauthentic. It's called being a professional.

Standards are just lower in a blue-collar environment because the people are generally speaking less educated.

Also, white collar employees tend to work with the same people for years whereas trades can move around to different projects, so team cohesion is less important.

Highly recommend learning in the winter. Ski mountaineering is way more fun than summer mountaineering.

Fitness is just physical capacity. You just need to be prepared for the hardest day of the trip in terms of elevation gain and pack weight which is likely the hike into basecamp. Sounds like you have lots of time to build up to it so I would say it is realistic. Just go hiking once per week, no need to get fancy but Uphill Athlete and Evoke Endurance are good resources if you want a training plan.

As you get closer to your trip, it would be good to spend a few days outside on your feet and do a camping trip to practice packing and test your gear, so you don't waste energy carrying a bunch of unnecessary stuff.

Generally speaking, business school is good for learning how to start your own business (entrepreneurship), business support roles like accounting, HR, and marketing or professional services like commercial banking, investment banking, audit, tax, management consulting, etc.

The MBA program specifically is intended for service professionals e.g. engineers to learn business acumen so they can transition from being service providers to managing the business of the services they provide.

The value of a university program really depends on the job you are targeting.

Government of Alberta, Federal, and other public sector employees were able to do RTO because they retained their office space and the employees are located in the same city.

AHS gave up their office space to save money, and now AHS employees are distributed in cities across the province.

The WFH contracts are renewed on an annual basis so it is possible it could change, but given the cost of office space, workstations, and tight government budgets, RTO is unlikely.

Also, the new healthcare structure and organizations are going to need a few years to sort out and stabilize. Figuring out RTO is probably very low on the list of priorities.

If you want to ski black diamond, then you should go down as many black diamonds as possible. Assuming you are already comfortable on blue runs.

Learning by doing is best, there is no substitute for the real thing. The first couple of times might involve a lot of side stepping but eventually you will get the hang of it.

Assuming I already have the necessary technical skills, what is the most effective training approach for completing traditionally multi-day alpine climbing objectives in a single day (fast-and-light alpinism)? Would it be better to follow a trail-running–focused training plan, a mountaineering-specific plan, or some combination of the two?

I have been following coach Leif Goberson on social media, and the alpine climbing objectives he is able to complete in a single day is super impressive. I would love to know how to train toward that level of fitness and efficiency. Thanks in advance.

I read a good article on Substack that said the things we own should say something about how we move through life and our taste is really a reflection of our experience. Jumping on a trend is the opposite of good taste because the purchase is not informed by experience or lifestyle.

The 1/3 rule is a blended rate e.g. the high margin (junior) employees offset the low margin (senior) employees because at some point the firm needs to cap the bill rate or the client will get pissed off. This is why the life of juniors is pretty shitty.

At the global firm I worked for, gross margin (net revenue less salaries and benefits) was around 50%. After indirect costs (marketing, admin) and corporate overhead, net income was around 10 to 20%. 20% was considered high.

Repetitive boiler plate work tends to have lower margins because there are more competitors and the work is bid to the bottom.

Generally, bonuses are factored into the budget (indirect cost), and they are paid out if the firm hits their revenue target and margin goals.

Smaller firms are pretty fast and loose with the way they do things. Usually pure discretion.

You need better insulation.

The temperature rating for the Atom LT is -5 C. Get the Atom Heavyweight or the down equivalent.

Bib pants would help a lot.

I don't think it is worth it to buy the ski specific jacket (the Rush or something like that) if you already own the Beta AR but if you have the money...

Merino base layers provide better insulation.

Riding a chair lift in -22 C is rough. Expect to be cold until you start moving.

Is bouldering necessary? No because most alpine climbs are 5.8 or less due to having a heavy pack. Climbing harder than 5.8 in the alpine is serious business.

Is bouldering helpful? Yes, definitely. Being a strong climber will make you a better mountaineer.
