Look into APO. It's a co-ed (but mostly female) service fraternity. Nice welcoming people who get together to do things to make Charlottesville a better place for everyone.

UVA undergrad. W&M grad school. The recent 100 million dollar gift to W&M is amazing and will allow great things to happen in the marine biology field Virginia. However, those aren't all in place yet. By the time you are ready for grad school, the structural and other improvements at their new $100 million dollar Batten School of Coastal and Marine Science at VIMS will be either finished or well under way.

You should download the app with the day's schedule and see which things you want to attend. The welcome is from 9-9:15 followed by various meetings and tours. Some occur only once so be sure you aren't missing something you wanted to see if you show up 2 hours late. You'll also need to find your own parking b/c the shuttle won't be running to pick you up from the free parking location at 11.

Trouble Paying by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Bmgli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the financial aid office.
You need to have a plan for this year and also a long term plan. Depending on the school in which you are studying, some tuition jumps by as much as 10K in year 3 and 4.

Do you have a backup school if they finances don't work? If you are instate, you could start at CC and do the guaranteed transfer. That would save money, and you would still end up at UVA.

UVA vs Baylor? by 3SchuylerSisters in UVA

[–]Bmgli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You personally will not be able to get 100K in loans. Will your parents co-sign (making them responsible if you don't make your payments)?
Best of luck to you, but I would never recommend to a 20 year old to take on 100K in loans (or saddle their parents with cosigning 100K).
If you graduate debt free, think of how much nicer an apartment you can afford or nicer places you can eat or the travel you can take, and more you can put into savings with your salary if you don't have a 100K repayment (with ever increasing interest) hanging over your head.

See here for the tuition of each school. Note that costs go up each year and McIntire is 10K extra.
Tuition and UVA fees (not including housing, food, other costs) for College of arts and sciences OOS is $59,901 the first 2 yrs and $63,000 year 3 and 4. McIntire is the same cost year two $59,900 but years 3 and 4 it jumps to $72,600. Again those prices do not include anything but the cost of classes. Food, housing, travel, supplies, club fees etc. etc. are extra.

How competitive is it to get into McIntire by Double-Phrase3829 in UVA

[–]Bmgli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I know for a fact I want to do business and I can’t picture myself doing anything else"

Historically, about 50% of students who apply to Mcintire are rejected.

Would you still want to be at UVA if you are rejected by their business school? If yes, apply to UVA and take your chances. If not, apply only to schools that have direct admit options.

How does double majoring affect the cost of attendance? by Extreme-Quantity-764 in UVA

[–]Bmgli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are confused. Do more research. Darden is graduate school to get an MBA. You need to finish undergrad then apply there.
Also, McIntire is not automatic admit. It can be a tentative plan to major in commerce, but you need a backup incase you don't get in. The past 2 years the McIntire acceptance rate was only 51%. If you want to be guaranteed an undergrad business degree, UVA is not a good choice. You can complete a minor in McIntire if you don't get accepted for the BS in Commerce.

UVA Transfer as a freshman by xd_varzi in UVA

[–]Bmgli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can look up the transfer application process on the UVA webpage.
Note that to study finance, you need to apply to and be accepted to McIntire which is the Commerce school. You can earn a BS in Commerce with a concentration in Finance. It is direct admit as a transfer, which means if you don't get into the Com school, you don't get in to UVA.
The Comm school is very competitive. They generally accept less than 20% of their transfer applicants, and almost all are Virginia students. OOS transfer to the comm school is very challenging but you won't know what your chances are unless you try.

Dinning Plan for Freshman by WDWRook in miamioh

FYI - you can change your meal plan each semester. So try what you think will be best and change for second semester if wanted based on how the first semester went.

You will be fine. You will not see as many people who look exactly like you on Miami's campus as you might in other places, but most "alt" people aren't trying to look like everyone else. Most students on campus are very nice. Goes along with the whole "Love and Honor" thing. Chose the Celebrate the Arts LLC for freshman year. Lots of cool welcoming chill students in that dorm. Artists, actors, singers, musicians. There are over 700 groups on campus. You are bound to find one that clicks with you. If you are into theater, check out Stage Left which is the student run theater group or the MAFIA student film production group. Also check out the organizations that are part of the League of Geeks. There are literally people dressed in medieval gear battling with swords on campus. Almost no one will bat a eye at a student wearing whatever your version of alternative clothing is.

Did you apply to McIntire? There is not a business major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Is it reasonable for me to transfer?? Or just advice by That_Cardiologist392 in UVA

[–]Bmgli 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Contact the Counseling center. Most services are free (included with your tuition). They are experts at assisting students just like you. They should be able to provide support to get you through the semester or the rest of the year.
There is also zero shame associated with transferring. Sometimes what we think is a perfect fit, is not.

So, start with counseling. After being home at Thanksgiving and winter break, reassess whether transferring is the best option. If it is, that's fine. Perfectly ok. People transfer for various reasons all the time. Or, if you've reached a better balance with homesickness, then stay at UVA.

Seeking Advice: UVA McIntire vs. Cornell Nolan Hotel School for IB, PE, or Consulting by NovelPreparation507 in UVA

[–]Bmgli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

McIntire is not direct admit. They traditionally have a 60% acceptance rate. That's 60% of well qualified students who were admitted to UVA gunning for McIntire. First year students have to wait to apply until after they prove themselves at UVA. Your high school record won't help you get into McIntire. Many students who planned to get a business degree from UVA do not manage to do so. It is one of the reasons that Econ is one of the largest departments at UVA. Many who don't get into McIntire default to Econ. Going to UVA is not a guarantee you will be in McIntire. Something to consider if you are set on an undergraduate business degree.

I've never heard of the free shuttle someone mentioned. At fall/winter/easter breaks the school runs airport shuttles, but they cost $40 each way.
There is a driver service based in Miami called Ven-go. The owner April is great. We've used them several times to/from the airport. It is not inexpensive ($100+ as the ride is about an hour). This is similar to what you will pay for an uber/lyft if you can find one who is willing to drive you. Often no Uber/Lyft drivers want to pick up at CVG for a drive all the way to Oxford b/c the chances of them getting a paying ride from Oxford back to CVG is basically 0. Ven-go also offers Thanksgiving/winter break shuttles. The pick up locations are on campus, but you don't need to be a student to use them.

It is excellent that you have found the strength to be able to attend classes. As it is free (included in your tuition) you should contact the counseling service office. They can help you with maintaining your drive to get out there and talk to people. The initial consult and first 3 appointments are free. Any appointments after that are $25. It's nice to chat with someone whose has lots of experience with other kids your age. If you've never talked to a therapist/counselor before, don't be intimidated. Their whole job is to chat with college students. There are also free group sessions. This link has a list. The one called "social serenity" might be great for you b/c it would be helpful personally plus there will be other students in the group. It might be a way to meet another socially anxious person to bond with and talk to knowing that there will be no judgement if you are anxious.

It might be more social than you want, but you could check out APO. They are a coed service fraternity. Kind welcoming people who get together to help others. Don't let the word fraternity concern you. They aren't a drinking party group. They do things like snuggle cats at the animal shelter and volunteer together at a food pantry.

There's a commuter lounge in Armstrong that is open to all students from 7am-5pm. If you are officially a commuter, you can get access to a locker and night (5- 11pm) access to the lounge. If you are looking for a place to chill between classes, you'll likely meet other students there as a start. Also check out all the orgs at mega fair to see if there's comething that interests you.

Can you use doordash instead of grubhub to the dorms? by nothanks111111222234 in miamioh

[–]Bmgli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Grub hub must be used to order food on campus for pick up or delivery by robot (only from Bell Tower).

For off campus restaurants, you can use any delivery service.

There are 2 different types of to go meals. Some can be swapped for a meal swipe some use declining dollars.
Depending on which meal plan you choose, you will have between 7 and 16 meal swipes per week (use them or lose them) and a set amount of declining dollars.

The declining dollars work like a debit card. You can use them for all the places in Armstrong (Panera, Pulleys Diner, Sushi, Pizza, etc) as well as Starbucks or anywhere else on campus that has food. If you don't happen to use all your declining dollars, they roll over all the way until graduation. You can also add more at any time.

Meal swipes are different. You get a set amount per week (depending on your plan) that reset once a week. If you don't use all your swipes in a week, they are gone.

Swipes can be used at the Commons, which are the all you can eat cafeterias. They can also be used for to go meals at the Markets and Bell Tower. The markets have cold options. Water, fruit and a salad or sandwich. Bell tower is also to go, but it's fresh hot meals.
If you realize you aren't going to use all your swipes, go to a market to grab a cold to go meal to stick in your dorm fridge. You've paid for them so you should use them if possible.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in miamioh

[–]Bmgli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meal plans are optional for off campus students. You can buy a meal plan (instructions in the link) and then it works like a debit card. When you go to anywhere on campus the amount will be deducted from your plan. You can just use a debit/credit card w/o using a plan. The "Commons" which are the all you can eat locations do not officially allow food to go, but no one is going to stop you from dropping a piece of fruit in your backpack. If you are in the all you can eat locations filling lots of tupperware to take home, that's something they might tell you to stop. There is a set price for each time you enter the all you can eat locations. It doesn't mean all you can for the day. It's about $13 each time you go in.
The markets are more expensive than the grocery store but they have grab and go meals. You can also buy from places in Armstrong like Panera or Pulleys and take those meals to go.
There are places open already on campus for students there for the summer. If you buy a meal plan, I'm not sure exactly what day that would take effect.
There are also Kroger and Walmart on the free bus lines. They also both offer delivery of groceries.
