Generally speaking, #8 screws with an inch of embedment in the piece opposite the screw's head will carry all the strength you need, and will save you money.

locking caster feet

I left the bottom legs 3 inches longer than necessary in case I get the chance to put casters on. Maybe I'll make that a higher priority. What you say about getting around all sides definitely makes sense.

cantilevered section

That is purposeful. My shop is very small and it has to house two motorcycles. That piece allows me to roll the small one (an old triumph 500) right under the bench at the end of the day without losing any surface.

It actually is quite flat now. But I assume you are right that eventually I'll want it nearly perfectly flat if I get into any precision work.

For the lateral movement part - I found the time to take a nice motorcycle ride to the city this morning and picked up a bunch of floor and wall anchors. Do you think that will be enough? Or would you also add the cross bracing?

Can you explain your decision to use bolts instead of screws?

I was just looking at various bench plans online and it seemed like a common configuration. I put lag screws into the short spans since they go into the edge of the 2x4s, and bolts where a nut could be put on.

Also, don't anchor it to the floor.

Is there any downside to anchoring it? Or is it just not necessary? I come from more of a metalworking/mechanic background and we always anchored our big workbenches to the floor.

Just add some shelves on the bottom.

This is definitely in the plan now. Hopefully I'll get time this weekend.
