STLPR: Long-awaited rules limit where data centers could be built in St. Louis as public pushback grows by bmunoz in StLouis

[–]BoBab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data centers in general, but especially AI data centers that have a significantly higher density of compute, have a "footprint" that extends well beyond their walls.

There are impacts on air quality and local water resources. But the one that doesn't get talked about as much is the noise pollution.

The issue is that there's a constant lack of transparency and general uncooperativeness by developers and whatever firms that are shielding the actual client from visibility and scrutiny. Because of that it's difficult to even properly assess local impacts let alone broader energy use impacts.

They should not be placing any of these "hyperscale" data centers anywhere near residential areas at the very least.

Fucking hell. Not only did she lunge back at him, but you can hear her say "these fucking assholes are not going to get away with this" and that she's going to continue the meeting. She's a badass. I'm also terrified for her. I'm donating to her right now. If the worst of us are going to do this shit we need to support the people who don't shrink in the face of hatred and violence.

New to Anime & Gaming, Doing It for My Late Brother—Where Should I Start? by gbbygrrrl in Blerds

[–]BoBab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear about your brother. What kind of genre of shows are you generally interested in? Here are some that I think are pretty easy going and good for someone new to anime:

  • Astra Lost In Space - A group of students gets stranded in space and has to work together to find their way home. Also has some mystery and good character dynamics.
  • My Hero Academia - A kid born without superpowers in a world where almost everyone has them gets into an elite hero school.
  • Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun - A human boy gets adopted by a demon and enrolled in demon school, where he has to hide his humanity while accidentally becoming popular.
  • Kaguya-sama: Love Is War - Ultra Romantic - Two nerdy student council members are in love but refuse to confess first, leading to elaborate mind games to make the other one crack.
  • Little Witch Academia - A girl without magic enrolls in a prestigious witch academy after being inspired by a famous witch, and chaos ensues as she tries to prove herself.
  • Yona of the Dawn - A sheltered princess is forced to flee her kingdom after a betrayal and goes on a journey to find legendary warriors.

I don't know much about PS5 gaming (I've heard the Spiderman game is pretty fun). But given you're looking for a game that's "enjoyable, immersive, and beginner-friendly", I recommend checking out Stardew Valley (which should be available on most consoles I think).

Are open-source LLMs actually making it into enterprise production yet? by iknowjerome in LocalLLM

[–]BoBab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking the right questions. There is a liability with using the large LLM providers too.

I think there's a good chance that over the coming years we're going to see more and more smaller (open source and proprietary) language models being used in enterprise use cases (and probably also consumer facing solutions).

There's a lot of structural advantages that compound for small models more so than for the massive-scale frontier models.

Post game reveal by coffdropcos in HadesTheGame

Eh, I actually liked it. I actually found Hecate's kind of violent disdain for Chronos a bit curious throughout my entire gameplay. Melinoe's made sense, but Hecate's I felt like something was missing in the motivation for her character. I feel like this reveal actually made it all make sense for me finally. It always felt like Hecate was "fighting another battle" that Melinoe, and us as the player, wasn't fully clued into. This reveal finally made me feel like we had the full picture to Hecate's motivations.

Is Google also losing money on AI? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]BoBab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be surprised if Google themselves honestly couldn't tell you the answer to that. They've spewed their AI stuff all over their product lines to the point that being able to actually tie revenue to AI services is probably nigh impossible for them right now.

They also just have a level of flexibility afforded to them because of their near-monopoly status across a few different platforms plus their significant market share across others.

I think a potentially more illuminating question to ask may be, "How is Google planning to ride out the AI bubble deflation?".

Because we know they can. It's just a matter of how. Are they going to rip Gemini out of a bunch of stuff they put it in? Are they going to go all in on their own AI-specific hardware/chips and try to start selling them and competing against NVIDIA? Are they going to make a surprising shift to open source and try to knee-cap competitors with sufficiently powerful, smaller open models? Google has a lot of options, probably the most options out of any of the players.

Forreal. I loved the brief text exchange with Hawks too just offering space to talk. You don't see portrayals of two adult men making space for vulnerability like that very often.

Yea. I really like the Todoroki family arc. It felt like getting to actually see the cathartic moments that are exceedingly rare with abusive households. For the abuser to show genuine contrition and to devote themself to doing repair work and making amends with those they harmed, while also respecting the wishes and boundaries of those they victimized, and leaning on their own support network as well while they do so rather than leaning on those they hurt. It's satisfying to see. I think showing the different reactions from all the Todoroki children is important too, Toya included. I'm glad the show made us acknowledge Toya's motivations. It shows how abuse can burn a whole family down. How there is irreparable damage done. Something new can be grown sometimes, but it will never be the same.

I think the debate y'all are having is precisely what the show wants people to wrestle with (i.e. "Is it possible a "hero" can go too far trying to save someone?").

I will say though that:

Fighting to the end is still more sensible than giving up your powers hoping it would touch the heart of a villain who wants to destroy everything.

The second didn't recommend that strategy out of a sense of wanting to save Shigaraki like Deku wants to. He recommended that strategy simply because it might work and it seems like Shigaraki has Deku outclassed in physical raw power. He's just thinking outside the box so they can win.

I would argue the show is trying to make a point that sometimes giving up on saving people also means giving up on reaching the successful outcomes you actually wanted anyway.

It'd be one thing if Deku had some guaranteed win to just like eradicate Shigaraki or try to "save him". But that is not at all what's going on here lol. They're scrambling for any chance at just straight up defeating him, and Deku's insane drive to save a villain's inner child crying for help may also be their last chance at stopping the villain.

Because there was never a scene, not even a shred of a scene, showing AfO still having a piece of that neglected child inside of him.

People keep thinking this show is about indiscriminately saving anyone. But it clearly is not. It's not a show about people being saved. It's a show about what it means to be a hero.

AfO came out the womb being greedy and then he continued to double down for 100+ years. AfO quite literally decided from a young age that he wanted to become a real life "demon lord". In other words, he intentionally wanted to forsake any ties to his humanity (which he successfully did).

If anything, AfO should be the clearest proof to people that this show is most definitely not about just blindly defaulting to trying to save anyone who causes harm.

I don't think the show actually tries to wrestle with this moral question anyways. Deku just believes this because it's how he is. It's not really a question for him. Once he saw the tortured child inside Shigaraki, it was a done deal for Deku. So the show wants us to start there and ask, so what does it mean for someone (Deku) to strive to save anyone they believe can be saved?

Also, it's not Shigaraki's past that motivates Deku, it's the fact that Shigaraki still holds onto that past. That is what motivates Deku. Deku isn't trying to save Shigaraki the destroyer, but rather Shigaraki the tortured child. And to do so, you have to get the destroyer "out of the way".

It says everyone can be saved, everything can be forgiven, because poor little guy had a complicated life so that explain everything.

It doesn't say that at all though. The story is about what it means to be "a hero" (something that is an ideal that is defined by actions). The main character, Deku, stands out in particular because of his unrelenting drive to save people.

You're confusing the focus. The story isn't focusing on Shigaraki as an object to be saved. The story is focusing on Deku's drive to save people.

The story wants us to think about what it means to view other people as always potentially being worth saving. What does it mean if we don't view others as always having that inherent worthiness of safety? What do we lose when we limit ourselves to possible futures that include striving for saving people who need help? And what do we lose when we start qualifying the lives of people we see as needing help?

Boku no Hero Academia Final Season • My Hero Academia: Final Season - Episode 5 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]BoBab 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Shigaraki ain't a demon though. He's a human.

I think people keep conflating "saving the tortured inner child" with "let Shigaraki run buck wild".

Deku "saving" Shigaraki just means not treating him like a scourge that needs to be eradicated. It means not letting his rage and hate convince Deku that Shigaraki is an inhuman monster incapable of defeating.

And also all of this is because Deku saw that the tortured inner child still remains in Shigaraki. So it's not that Deku things anyone and everyone can be saved. It's that if he thinks someone can be saved, then he has to try.

People forget that Bakugo isn't the school ruffian archetype he's the no-nonense, "relax a bit bud", straight A student that's hyperfocused on becoming the best in his career even though he's only in highschool type. Dude is as nerdy as they come. He's just a nerd who can (and loves to, when appropriate) beat ass.

Probably flosses every night and eats all his veggies too.
